A truck with “Vision Mountain Mission Project” painted on the side slowed to a stop in a rural village in the Dominican Republic. I stepped off the truck into the sunny, humid weather. Instantly, I was embraced by the community’s residents with enthusiasm and optimism, despite their torn clothing, ragged flip flops, and tiny, rugged shacks. While organizing various stations at the clinical site for free medical services, I pre-examined a number of patients whom other medical personnel and I were expected to care for that day. Outside the tent, I was taken aback by the tremendous amount of people that were waiting at the entrance. Each of these patients was given the opportunity to receive health screenings, vital readings, medications, and
Tadeusz Trepkowski was the first Polish poster designer to emerge after WWII who lived from 1915 until 1954, unfortunately dying at the young age of forty. (RoGallery) His training evolved from his education at “Printing Industry School and City College of Decorative Arts and Painting in Warsaw.” (RoGallery, 2013) Trepkowski’s anti-war, publicity, and political poster art became very prominent after WWII - when the poster became a “great source of national pride for Poland” (Meggs, Philip and Alston Purvis, 2012) and became very “important for communications” (Meggs, Philip and Alston Purvis, 2012) due to a lack of television and broadcasting in Poland during that time. (Meggs, Philip and Alston Purvis) Trepkowski was deeply affected by World
Throughout the chapters of this book Reiss has done an exceptional job of depicting the nature of pluralism and expressing how the acceptance of this sex positive perspective can alleviate our current sexual crisis. The pluralistic model is rooted in the idea of personal choice and teaching individuals to not impose their views of sexuality onto others, but to accept difference even when there is disagreement. As well as this it becomes evident that pluralism offers the notion that there is no single right way of expressing sexuality, but that there are endless amounts which depend on personal interests. In discussing the characteristics of pluralism the most important perspective of this concept, in my opinion, is the acceptance of the value
It’s no secret that we all have sex. Every person grows up as an individual, learning things about themselves as they go along, as well as learning about others. We all eventually end up calling someone else our significant other, whether it be of the same sex or not, and we all end up making personal decisions about our sexual identity and actions as we progress through life. We define our sexual identities of something unique to only us and we acquire our identities with a mix of influences: biological, psychological, social, cultures, values, and society in the time in which we are growing up. After such influences, we make the choice when to lose our
Regardless of their area of work, nurses have the potential to be exposed to the intimate partner violence (IPV) continuum. Often noticed as the front line workers, nurses are in a position to observe and assess situations where IPV is suspected, and intervene should these issues arise. Nurses are obligated to provide safe, holistic, quality care to victims of IPV and implement resources such as counseling, community support as well as physical and emotional support; “nurses work with persons who have health-care needs or are receiving care to enable them to attain their highest possible level of health and well-being” (CNA, 2017). Nurses have the ability to be a catalyst for positive change for individuals in abusive situations. Victims
I don’t believe that there is a right or wrong way to deal with sexuality, but I feel it is important to educate youth about sex so that they can make a decision for themselves. I feel the parents are the most important people to do this difficult job. If children feel comfortable discussing these topics with their parents then they are more likely to make appropriate and responsible decisions through this very challenging time in their
WOW, that is a lot of patients! This week’s lessons discusses the evolving role of the school nurse not only attending the students’ needs but involvement in “policy-making activities at both the local and state levels (CCN, 2015) The question proposed in this week’s lesson regarding some of the roles for the community health nurses is also applicable to the school nurse. The school nurse is the clinician, case manager, advocate, educator, researcher, administrator, change agent, case finder, coordinator and consultant in order to meet the complex needs of students.
The sexuality and reproductive assessment helps describes sexual fulfillment, sexual perception, and sexual self –concepts. (Edelman & Mandel, 2011). This assessment is focused on the satisfaction of one’s sexual life, and the changes that take place throughout a lifespan. Another pattern is the coping-stress tolerance pattern. This focuses on the family’s adaption to internal and external pressures related to their health, environment, and social status and how they cope with these pressures in their day to day lives. Finally, the last pattern is the values and belief pattern. Values and beliefs vary in different cultures. Therefore, the focus of this pattern is one’s attitude regarding the meaning of life, spirituality, and how these attitudes affect the family related health problems. (Edelman & Mandle, 2011).
During many years the role of school nurse was traditionally viewed as one where the nurse cared for students that were injured, applied bandages and gave out ice bags. Throughout the years the role of the school nurse has evolved into one of leadership and management along with many other duties including traditional roles as mentioned above. The services provided by a school nurse range from assessment and screening to coordinating care for regular students as well as students with special needs. School nursing requires experience and knowledge in school, public, community and emergency health to meet the many needs of school aged children and youth. The school nurse provides many services but the basic services provided include
For children with specific health needs the nurse is involved in the care plan for the child. This ensures all staff working with the child are aware of the child’s needs and what they have to do if the child is unwell. The school nurse can also be involved in “in school training”. For example: giving all staff training on the use of epi-pens for use if a child has a severe anaphylactic shock.
Shaping my sexual behavior was generally influenced by my mom. I learned to be dependent on men and use safe sex through media. Gender sex roles also placed me to be secretive with my sex life and nurturing. My body image makes me insecure when it comes to intimacy. There were no specific sexual guidelines that my family made me follow. I was raised in a family where I was able to explore and have my own opinions about sexual situations. Not having guidelines or a path made me lost and confused once I obtained sexual behaviors. My experiences from friends, my mom, religion, and media influenced the development of my sexuality.
Slavery has played a strong role in African society from as early as prehistoric times, continuing to the modern era. Early slavery within Africa was a common practice in many societies, and was very central to the country’s economy. Beginning around the 7th century, two groups of non-African slave traders significantly altered the traditional African forms of slavery that had been practiced in the past. Native Africans were now being forced to leave the country to be used as slaves. The two major slave trades, trans-Saharan and trans-Atlantic, became central to the organization of Africa and its societies until the modern era. Slavery and the slave trade strongly affected African society, and
The night before the clinical, I have tried my best to learn as much as I can about the nurse’s role in the care of pediatric patient in a public health setting; immunization, patient interaction, and patient education. So, after learning that I would spend most of my day at the women’s health clinic, particularly at the sexually transmittable disease unit, I was disappointed. However, as the day went along and after observing the first patient testing procedure, this clinical assignment does not seem so bad after all. I have observed four different sexually transmitted disease cases, each one different from the other, but every patient seemed to have similarities in terms of their risks taking behaviors. Indeed, it was interesting to note that some patient are repeatedly seen at the clinic, without any alteration to that kind of behavior. Moreover, the patient seen at the clinic that day, coming from a very diverse demographic, engaging in activities that detrimental
Sex. It is everywhere. We see in television shows. In magazines. On the Internet. But sex is still seen as a taboo subject in our society. I believe that being educated about sexuality is vitally important to one health. Understanding one’s body and how it impacts your life. To understand how your beliefs about sexuality and sex have developed one needs to look back over the years and how your beliefs were engrained in your life. This essay will be based on my reflection by looking back on my sexual history on how and what have significantly impacted my development of sexuality. The focus will be on my reflection of answering the sexual history questions and how I have changed and developed over the years. It is important to analyze and reflect to understand how I came to be today, that the past has created my ideas and beliefs about sex and sexuality that have shaped me.
Sexuality has been an important part of me for as long as I can remember. Recently in a class, we were asked to think about the one thing that no one could take away from you, no matter who whey were or what you were offered. This had to be the one thing that defined your identity
