Jacquelin Fleming; When you think of literature, reading and writing is usually what comes to mind. However, literature is way more than just reading and writing. It’s present throughout our lives, interactions, and experiences. Even the practice of communication between people can show how rhetorical situations impact writing. A conversation is nothing without someone to respond to just as a book is nothing without a reader. Texts and other meanings are constructed in response and relation to a text. In Grant Davie’s “Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents,” he stresses the importance of both the rhetoric and the audience in various situations.

I repeatedly had to ask my Grandpa to slow down or speak English when we were conversing. This is an example of code-switching which refers to changing language or tone for different audiences. It is important to change language and tone in your writing in order to successfully engage with your audience. There is a clear change in tone when writing an essay from a prompt to writing a short story for a book. When I was in eighth grade I wrote about my first level 6 paper. During middle school we were graded on a level 1-6 with 6 being the highest. The topic was about what historical figure is the most memorable to you. I wrote about Abraham Lincoln and how his efforts changed history by ending slavery. In my essay I used the basic template that the teacher gave on how essays should be formatted. We were taught to give false statistics and quotes to make the reader appeal to our topic and help us support our ideas. My teacher always taught us to use “big words” which meant using more profound words with similar meanings. For instance, replacing the word bad with unpleasant would be a better way to deeply explain my topic or viewpoint. When it came to writing an introduction to a short story I had a very different approach. After school I would love to go home and read books about teenagers who struggled with peer-pressure, self-affliction, and abuse. These books inspired …show more content…
Roozen studies how Lindsey Rachel’s literacy practices helped when applied to writing her feminine ideal paper. Lindsey copied and underlined her religious verses down so she would be able to analyze the text and better understand the meaning of the various verses. Her verse-copying method helped her in writing the feminine ideal paper in which she repurposed her practice by taking notes and writing down quotes that would assist in formulating her paper. Copying the text helped her further focus on the main point of her discussion and important lines from the various passages she was studying. Lindsey also repurposed her use of outlining in graphic design to help her organize essays. By arranging her text she was able to produce a well-structured paper and developed an argument about the feminine ideal. Lindsey would tear a section from her notes and assemble them into pages to organize her ideas and proposal. Different discourse tools such as extradisciplinary practices can benefit a student by improving their
Rhetorical analysis refers to the study done by an author's use of words to influence their audience. It is closely related to diction which refers to an author's choice of words. The rhetorical analysis breaks a non-fiction work into sections then explains how the parts work together to create an effect. The effect could be achieved via persuasion, entertainment, or information. This paper will, therefore, divide the book into different sections and give an analysis of such parts to identify how the chapters are organized to help in achieving the intended effect. It will determine the elements of writing used to give the pathos, ethos, and logos. It will further identify the figures of speech used and their effectiveness. The paper will also
The rhetorical situation refers to “a situation in which people’s understanding can be changed through messages.” (Zarefsky, 12). The rhetorical situation analysis consists of four elements: audience, occasion, speaker and speech, each assessing the quality of speech. In this essay, I will analyze the rhetorical situation of the historical speech “The Challenger Address” delivered by the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

Rhetorical strategies are techniques writers use for a particular effect. In previous classes, you might have been introduced to them as “literary devices” – others will be completely new to you. When thinking of language choices that we make when writing or speaking, think of it like this -- everyone draws from a “toolbox” of rhetorical strategies as they express ideas and evoke responses in their readers. The more “tricks” of language that you know, the more effectively you can say what you want in the most effective way.
Rhetoric Review is an academic interdisciplinary journal of rhetoric. The journal issues in all areas of rhetoric and writing, and delivers a professional debate for its readers to reflect and discuss the topics and issues. The journal issues texts that investigate the extent and complexity of the discipline. We can conclude from the information that Porter’s main audience were college students mainly in writing classes. Porter’s motive could be helping college students by claiming that once the author knows how to write for a particular audience, they will be more likely to become a successful writer. Porter talks about how students should learn to write for a discourse community instead of writing to
In reference to the 100A assignment sheet for the rhetorical analysis, a rhetorical analysis is a written work that focuses on analyzing and understanding a published article. In this assignment, students will get opportunities to develop their writing and improve deep analytic skills to identifying rhetorical strategies that writers will use to achieve the purpose of a well-written document. The audience for this analytical paper will be my classmates, professor, and the committee members of the 100A.
As a modern-day student of English Composition, how is the study of rhetoric and rhetorical canon valuable to me? Prior to beginning this assignment I had very little knowledge of the term rhetoric, or rhetorical cannon when asked to write anything. In elementary school, our teachers taught us sentence structure, vocabulary, and the basics of writing for testing purposes, nevertheless reading this assignment showed me that rhetoric is basically the core of almost everything that we read every day.
David Foster Wallace, author of the essay “Authority and American Usage*,” praises and advocates for “good” writers who have a strong rhetorical ability, which he defines as “the persuasive use of language to influence the thoughts and actions of an audience” (Wallace 628). To have a strong rhetorical ability, an author needs to be aware of whom their audience is, in order to present their information in a way that will be influential on their audience. Wallace recognizes that an author who applies a strong rhetorical ability will be able to connect with the audience so that they respond “not just to [their] utterance but also to [them]” (Wallace 641). An author needs to take into consideration not just content, syntax and grammatical
Movies, songs and even paintings may seem like just entertaining; but have you ever thought that every text has an argument and there are several rhetorical strategies embedded into the plot, which make the movie’s argument effective? I am a huge fan of the movie “Notting Hill”. I decided to analyze rhetorical strategies in this movie so that I can understand this movie better.
A time that I misjudged my rhetorical situation was when I was a new freshman back in August 2017. During the month of August, Texas Woman's University held multiple events for first-year students. One of the many events that I attended was Pioneer Camp. I remember sitting in my dorm room and reading through the Pioneer Camp pamphlet that I was given. I took note of the events that were being held during the week of Pioneer Camp that struck my interest. One of the many events that struck my interest was the involvement fair. I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to meet new people and find organizations that I could possibly be involved in. I knew that this event would give me a glimpse of what the student involvement is like at Texas
Literature is the main type of art. It is the art of the word, which can describe events, history, fillings and everything that inaccessible to vision. For some people, literature can be a pain relief, a helpful lesson, or person’s own drama. In the same way, the main goal of the literature is teaching a person from the first to the last breath. In “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield, and “A pair of tickets” by Amy Tan, readers can see different points of view on life and family of the main characters, which leads to the determination of the human’s mission.
A writer might fell compelled to write about literature to tell people about their personal stay on view on the subject and how it affected them.
Since the beginning of the semester, my writing has changed and evolved to accommodate and sustain longer essays. With longer essays, there is more room for in-depth analysis. Further analyzing a topic has led me to findings that I did not know existed. As I continue to write, I uncover addition and superior methods to approach my writing to the benefit of me and therefore, my audience. Throughout the semester, I have incorporated techniques to further my narrative throughout my writing.
