In the documentary The Revisionaries shows how everything really works on the Texas State Board of Education. It showed that the board should be made up of new members. This also shows a certain bias to specific ideas that question the beliefs of God. These are some of the examples that can be seen in the documentary.
The reason there should be a new set of board members is, throughout the film they really didn't seem like they knew what they were doing. If you have a important job that can affect a lot of people you should at least be capable of doing that job right. One example was when one of the board members just voted on a change to the book because she didn't know what it was. They also pick and choose what they want the students to

Which turned out to be the Social Studies textbook. With this textbook they were more successful with having what they want in that there and not with what is beneficial for students. This also showed that sometimes they didn't follow with some facts that were backed up with facts. Also not all the board members are on the same page because there was one scene where a board member was trying to speak but wasn't given the chance to. This frustrated him, although he is a member of the board he didn't get a chance to speak because the other board didn't want to hear what he had to say. They also wanted to change how certain incidents happened also the culture of some ethnic …show more content…
For example, the head board leader said he is a fundamentalist Christian which means that he is all about God and spreading the word of God. This can cause problems especially since now a days not everyone believes in a God. What he seemed to be doing is secretly putting God in the textbooks which is not allowed. This caused issues with scientific education because it would go against his beliefs. This is why open minded board members would be able to do a better job than what Texas has now. They would consider all logics for the textbook and would make sure that there wouldn't be any problems with what the students are learning. They especially wouldn't try to push their own beliefs and religion in the books. The board would be considerate of all logics of science and would give the opportunity to let students see other logics that scientists have come up
However, the process was unstructured: there were no annual terms for the board members and no formal election process. Bob and Rex should have put in contractual agreements with the board members, which defined their roles and responsibilities on the board. Additionally, they should have put in performance based incentive plans for the board members to further incentivize them. Furthermore, a formal selection plan should have been drafted to select the board in future: how many members, their expertise, tenure, etc. This plan would have been very useful if someone on the board decided to leave or if they would have wanted to add a new
The leadership team at New Horizon Academy is a strong and consistent team, as the company has only had two CEO’s in the 45 years that the company has opened (K. Hillyard, Personal Communication, September 18, 2017). In addition, most of their board members have been with New Horizon Academy for over 20 years (K. Hillyard, Personal Communication, September 18, 2017). The purpose of the board is to provide the best child development; in addition, they strive to ensure that they are committed to providing excellent in every aspect of their programs and services they provide for families (K. The meeting was held at the Glenwood Landing School Auditorium. It was hosted by the North Shore Schools Board of Education. It convened at six- thirty p.m. on Thursday October 6th, 2016 at 60 Cody Avenue, Glen Head, NY 11545. This meeting discussed issues, concerns, and matters that addressed the needs of the schools, students and community. The purpose of the North Shore Board of Education is to serve as a liaison between the community and the Board regarding legislative matters that have a direct bearing on fiscal or educational aspects of the North Shore Central School District. The Board of Education consists of seven individuals whose primary responsibilities include: establishing general policies consistent with the laws of New York State and the rules and regulations of the State Education Department.
Steps have been made to improve the curriculum shown to students, but it is slow moving. In an article in Slate, the TEA rejected a proposal. The author wrote, “But in a close 8–7 vote, the Texas State Board of Education rejected a proposed amendment that would’ve empowered it to create an expert panel of academics charged with catching the type of embarrassing inaccuracies..” (Moser) However, some improvements have been made. In the San Antonio Current, the review board overturned the publishing of the Mexican American Heritage textbook where several racist comments were written, such as, “‘lazy’ compared to ‘American industrialists.’” (Zielinksi) In another San Antonio Current article, strives were made to correct the science curriculum. The way students learned about cells and their complexity changed from just evaluating it to comparing it. This allows for more room for future updates. However, evolution was not named as one in the discussion as it was beforehand. (Simmons) As in the past, evolution discussion in schools of the state, was controversial to their Christian beliefs which contradicts the amendment added to SB-6. (“Texas school
in this chapter, we examine the basic legal framework of school law in Texas. We begin by discussing the sources of school law and then describe the roles of the state and federal governments in the establishment and operation of the Texas school system. We examine the functioning of the State Board of Education, the Texas Education Agency, local school districts, private schools, and charter schools. And we discuss the responsibilities of school administrators and the functioning of site-based management. Later sections look at important federal laws affecting the operation of Texas schools and review the long-running controversy over the fi nancing of Texas schools.
Textbooks are still being written for profit, politics, and nationalism. Education boards have been around for centuries and they are the ones who decide what they want their state or nation to recognize as valid history. Modern day education boards are revising textbooks to outline many narrow minded ideas such as in Texas where, “they wanted the texts to establish that the U.S. is a ‘Christian land governed by Christian principles” (The Week), and “ Slavery under the new standards, would no longer be described as America’s original sin, and would become “the Atlantic triangular trade” (The Week), such revisions will strongly affect the views of
Site Based Decision Making, more commonly referred to as SBDM, was mandated by the state of Texas for implementation in 1992. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) set the definition of SBDM in 2010 as:
School board meeting are essential to the everyday operation of school districts. The meeting was called to order by the school board president, the conservator himself, where a quorum was present to start the meeting. Our school board members are elected and can serve a 4 year term, but the district is under the state leadership currently. This is great, because with one individual making the decisions and voting, makes the process of getting things done a smoother approach. With too many individuals making decisions sometimes, they cannot agree or reach consensus.
They lack necessary motivation to excel academically. I’m quite sure that most young people in the area lack positive role models, that can influence their life decisions. Consequently, all the resources for the children are limited or outdated. On page 83 and 84 the author clearly illustrates too the reader the conditions of the classrooms and the desires of the instructors to have the basic necessities, like water in the chemistry lab. The writer really struck a nerve with me, when he mentioned that “ In the seventh grade social studies class the only book that bears some relevance to black concerns-its title is The American Negro-bears a publication date of 1967”. For, example I never experienced conditions similar to the students in the article, but I can relate to the lack of quality materials. Educators requiring that student receive instruction from a 30-year-old book that have inaccurate information. In addition, being denied access to materials about your heritage is a form of injustice. All students should be exposed to literaturary materials that explore various ethical backgrounds. Especially, in areas that have predominate racial demographics. For the most part, the families are victims of discrimination that is deeply imbedded into the fiber of this Midwestern
Accordingly, the internal problems regarding the organizational structure, decision-making strategies, the unique culture and configuration of the board of trustees aid in the internal problems, which exacerbated the accountability difficulties. The action plan centers on the structure of the board of trustees that focus on accreditation concerns specific to the composition and values of the trustee board, cultural issues affecting admission and the influence of the school reputation on enrollment growth, and faculty and staff retention. Conner (2011) contends that trustees are vitally important resource in campus leadership as they answer to both community forces and political demands, which require knowledge and motivation resulting in processes, which lead to more effective trustees, in theory, that will advance the performance of the institution.
Half a century ago, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech about the importance of government always maintaining an attitude of neutrality towards religion. President Kennedy stated, “I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute.” The United States has been a country, in which the separation of church and state has been adopted and assumed to be practiced, but there has been a perennial conflict disrupting the balance between church and state. In his innovative film, The Revisionaries, director Scott Thurman exposes how the public education system has become the latest battleground in the face of an old conflict – between religion and science – challenging the ideological edifice on which the nation stands.
Over the years, there has been an issue I Texas, but the main issue that has been going around is education in the public school’s system. In the pubic schools of Texas there are many problems that a student faces. The three main reasons are that some teachers don’t know how to speak English properly, some kids from private schools go to public schools, and finally there is no push from the teachers to help the students. These are the issues in which some students drop out or just do not try. In some schools in the state of Texas there are many types of teachers that could be from others countries or different background and that is ok, but if they don’t know to speak English properly then it ill be hard for the student to understand the teacher
The reason that I chose this body of government is because it directly is involved with my education. Every decision that is made whether it be from budge spending to curriculum changes, it will somehow affect me. I know that I am a senior and many of their choices that will be made the rest of this year will not affect me anymore. However, by going and seeing how the meeting are conducted and how the choices are made, I can better understand why they make the decisions they make. New policies and decisions will not affect me, but I do have a younger brother who still has two more years of high school. I want him to know that the choices made by those few people on the school board, have a profound effect on hundreds of children attending the schools in the district and should pay attention the decisions being made. From some of the discussions they have had since the meeting will really affect him and I feel like going and being an active member would help him understand why the decisions are being made. This was a good form of government to take part in because it models in a smaller setting what the United States government does. Also, later in life, it is important to understand and be informed on how decisions are
The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey
