How Does An Author Use Allusions In Literature

In the novel, “The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton” allusions played a big part in the book. An example of this is when Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally and go to Dairy Queen and engorged themselves in barbeque and banana splits. “We stopped at a Dairy Queen and the first thing I got was a Pepsi. Johnny and I gorged on barbeque sandwiches and banana splits,” (Hinton 83). The reason the Author used Dairy Queen as an allusion is because Dairy Queen is a well known restaurant and it came out in the 1940s, so it was a still kinda new thing and very popular to go to.

For example, in chapter 1, Harper Lee says “Maycomb County had recently been told it had nothing to fear but fear itself.” This is an allusion to when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s First Inaugural Address. Another allusion is “... nothing to buy and no money to buy it with” (chapter 1, page 5) this is reference to the stock market crash which led to the Great Depression. Also, the allusion "looking like a sleepy old shark, his pilot fish writing rapidly below him" (chapter 16, page 165) is used as a metaphor to describe the relationship between Judge Taylor and the court

Allusions are widely used in many famous pieces of literature. To Kill a Mockingbird, Old Man in the Sea, and Frankenstein are just some of the many books in which allusions play a substantial role. By analyzing allusions and symbolism in these books, the reader can connect fiction with real life. Although numerous people are oblivious to allusions, they play a large role in establishing the bigger picture of a story. Allusions within literature give the reader insight to what the author is really trying to get across because every story has a deeper meaning.

They stimulate the author’s ideas and associations in the reader’s mind with a few words, being a slight hint. Allusions add a deeper layer of understanding because if the reader understands the allusion, the reader starts to see the story or topic in a different way than portrayed in the story but still with the same initial intent.
