The way that Arthur Miller presents human behavior in Death of a Salesman, and how we look at human behavior today are similar in many ways. From looking at all the things people do to get ahead, to how we interact with one another, and how people feel deep inside. He presents all of those in the play. However, the key one that he seems to focus on a lot with Willy is him taking pride in the life that he has lived. Willy does not take anything from nobody, even though he shows many examples of false pride throughout the play. He is delusional about the life that he is living, and no one can get through to him about his current state of life. His pride was always on display when he was discussing with Linda about how much sales he did during the week. Then they would end up being short on money when it came time to pay the bills. Miller ties that behavior with Willy to what many people experience in their everyday lives. Many people in America today can talk about how good of a job they did in the week at whatever their profession is, but when it came time for the truth they have nothing to show for it. When a person realizes that their pride has become a problem it is too late, and they cannot relate to things in this life anymore. Miller starts with Willy relying on his past and the flashbacks. He sees pride in what he thinks he accomplished in the past, and think that way of thinking will carry him through his life. Then when we fast forward to the present Miller presents Willy as someone stuck in the past because of his pride that he cannot adapt to life. He is too prideful to get help from anyone and that leads to his downfall. The human behavior of pride that Miller presents shows that a person cannot let their pride get in the way of reality. That can be tied into the way of thinking today that they old ways are the best ways, when the world around you changes.
