This is the dictionary definition of the word crucible. Many have been punished because of their honesty, others have been rewarded because of their support with dishonesty. Showing honesty is part of a human’s daily life routine. “The Crucible” is a play by Arthur Miller about the witch trial during the year 1692. Abby claims to be affected by witchcraft, from Reverend Paris's daughter Betty. Abigail accuses people of witchcraft in her town, mostly the victims who they or their families dislike. In The Crucible Arthur miller is trying to express through John Proctor that bringing out the truth can save an innocent’s life. Arthur Miller in his play “The Crucible”, shows how most characters try to save their lives by admitting their mistakes and telling the truth. Abigail and John’s lies continue the play. In the very beginning of the play, we believe that John Proctor is a sinner and a feared man in Salem. John Proctor had some sort of affair with Abigail, this comes out while they are both talking in Betty’s room. John Proctor doesn’t want anyone to know …show more content…
There have been a lot of cases where characters in the Crucible have lied and most involve John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail. At first we are to believe that John is a dishonest person but as the play goes on he becomes the most honest person in the play. Abigail tries to get John to start falling in love with her again and she drinks a potion that she believes will kill Elizabeth. She wants to kill Elizabeth so John comes back to her, but the truth comes out. John confesses to save his wife’s live and asks her wife to say the truth, because you can’t hide it for long. Saying the truth hurts but in most cases it makes you a hero. If a person gets caught lying, he won’t be trusted by
In the play John Proctor was both respected and feared. In spite of this, Proctor sees himself as a fraud due to his affair with Abigail. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, it states “Proctor, respected and even feared in Salem, has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud” (Miller). The film, however, gave the notion that he was not feared by anyone and he did not see himself as a fraud. At the very beginning of the film, Proctor and Abigail shared a scene where John was almost happy to see Abigail.
The definition of crucible is a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. This definition can relate to the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller because the court can be thought of as the heat in which is melting the metal, but for the play it means that the court is causing tension in the town of Salem. Like the change of the metal, going from solid to liquid, many people either go through changes or try to make others change in the play; some of the most remembered for the changes are John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams. John and Elizabeth both change themselves through the play, but Williams tries to change those around her.
A crucible is a resistant material that can heat up substances of high temperature. A crucible can also be referred to as a test or trial. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Reverend Samuel Parris asserts to John Proctor that, “There is either obedience or the church will burn like Hell is burning!” (Miller 148). In the town of Salem there is a huge conflict between the church and false accusations made on witchcraft. When a slave, a young woman named Abigail and her cousin Betty are charged of being witches, they call out names of innocent girls in the town; as a result creating mass hysteria. The protagonist John Proctor is a dynamic character that changes drastically from a hot-headed hypocrite to a faithful man with dignity. In court Proctor admits to cheating on his wife Elizabeth with Abigail. Elizabeths true nature is “tested” when she has to confirm whether Proctor cheated on her on not. A hot fire burns in Salem, causing characters to
In Act I of the play The Crucible (1953), Miller informs the audience of John Proctor, and Abigail's affair that occurred during the time Abigail worked in the Proctor's home. The affair transpired during John’s marriage to Elizabeth Proctor. Later in the act, Elizabeth becomes aware of the affair and automatically dismisses Abigail. Throughout the play, Elizabeth is always portrayed as a level-headed individual who always stays true to herself and others, however, her husband John is not as composed, but values his self-worth causing him to find it difficult to forgive himself. The opening scene of Act II, Miller reveals the shallow depth of Elizabeth and John Proctor's relationship.
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the character of John Proctor was controlled by his secrets because he was willing to go to the extreme in giving up his life to keep them. In the process of keeping his secrets John Proctor was one leading reason to why so many people died in the Salem Massachusetts witch trials (1691). Miller begins with giving a backstory on John Proctor and how he ends up ruining the good name of Salem and its people. John Proctor is a good man and an honorable name. He is a farmer in Salem and a good husband to Elizabeth Proctor. However, in The Crucible, John Proctor’s actions with Abigail Williams, a former servant of the Proctor household, are put into questioning. Abigail Williams says to John, “I look for John Proctor
The year is 1692. Throughout the small, Puritan, seaside community of Salem, rumors and accusations fly like gusts of ocean wind. Neighbors turn on neighbors, and even the most holy church-goers are accused of being the devil’s servants. The Crucible details this real-life tragedy of the Salem witch trials, in which nineteen members of the Salem community were hanged for alleged witchcraft. Abigail Williams, a seemingly innocent girl, accuses dozens of Salem’s citizens of witchcraft through the support of her mob of girls and the complicity of the court officials. The title of this play gives significant insight into the experiences of several of these Salem citizens. Although a crucible is often used in chemistry for heating up substances, the title of the play carries a much greater weight. In his famous play The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the title of “crucible” to signify the severe and unrelenting tests of faith and character that many of the community members endure throughout the Salem witch trials, which he achieves through the use of figurative language and fallacies of relevance and insufficiency.
It is better to tell the truth then to lie while being in the moment and face the consequences for the rest of your life. Being afraid is a factor that the accusers had to face before the judges to determine their fate. Everyone within Salem was subject to the many trials that took place during that time. Abigail Williams, an adulteress establishes a relationship with John Proctor and is a compulsive liar who destroyed Elizabeth’s marriage. Elizabeth Proctor, a loving wife poured her heart into the community and sought the truth behind her husband’s betrayal. Arthur Miller’s,The Crucible was a memorable play that dictates the events that took place during the Salem Witch Trials.Living in Salem Mass. during that time was very challenging. Arthur
In the play, The Crucible, MIller allows the reader to learn something about the world by showing us that the sins that we have committed will keep weighing us down, until we confess them. John Proctor commits adultery with Abigail Williams, and keeps this affair a secret from Elizabeth. Proctor starts to feel guilty, and mad at himself. He attempts to pretend that the affair never happened. “But I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind, we never touched, Abby…..Proctor, angered--at himself as well: You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth!” (24) This piece of textual evidence proves that Proctor is unable to forgive himself for what he has done to Elizabeth, and what he has done to himself to lose his goodness.
In society, we are blind to lies that are taking place around us everyday. Small lies, big lies, lies right in front of our face, and we are oblivious to almost all of it. This is shown really well in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Throughout the play, which takes place during the witch trials that took place in Salem, lies make up a big portion of the plot. Some of these types of lies that are used are described very well in Stephanie Ericsson’s essay The Ways We Lie. These variations of lies amplify the outrage created, through McCarthyism, and the Salem Witch trials that take place in the play The Crucible.
John Proctor also lies throughout The Crucible. Although he has come clean to his wife, Elizabeth, about his love affair with Abigail, it is still a secret to the rest of the citizens of Salem. John is severely ashamed of his act of adultery, and has trouble admitting it to himself. When Elizabeth suggests early on,”I think you must tell him[Hale], John” (Miller 67), Proctor evades admitting the truth to Reverend Hale of his affair even though it could have been a valid excuse for the Proctor family’s lack of attendance at church and John’s inability to say the commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” In Act III, when John finally is forced to admit his clandestine affair with Abigail to the court, nobody believes him. Because John has waited so long to confess his affair, it just looks like a poor attempt to save him and Elizabeth from the indictments. If John had divulged the secret of his affair earlier on, people might scorn him for his sin, but he would have evaded the allegations of witchcraft.
Honesty is one of the biggest parts of The Crucible, this values gets broken by Abby over and over. She continues to lie and accuse people of using witch craft even though she knows that none of them are witches. Hale says, “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck into her belly.” Elizabeth says, “And she charges me?” Hale says, “Aye.” (Miller 1283). Another issue in the crucible with honesty is when they are forced to confess about being a witch or die. When they, are forced to confess they are lying to save their lives and this is not being honest.
Crucible, a noun defined as; a container of metal or refractory material employed for heating substances to high temperatures, in the traditional sense but, it also means a severe, searching test or trial. The latter of the two definitions is exactly what Arthur Miller had in mind when he wrote the play, The Crucible. The play set in Salem Massachusetts during the start of the infamous Salem Witch Trials, is about the struggle to discover truth within the twisted and brutal lies flying about the little town, started mainly by a young girl by the name of Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams, as we quickly come to know, is the past mistress of the prominent Mr. John Proctor, a local farmer. As the tension rises in the
Furthermore, According to, John Proctor and the Crucible of Individuation in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Michelle I Pearson, states, “Proctor's hypocrisy surrounds his dealings with and about Abigail. In committing adultery with Abigail, Proctor has sinnednot only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct" (18). He wishes, however, to deny this sin both to himself and to others.” This criticism helps
The word crucible describes an event that involves a test or trial of someone or something. In the story The Crucible by Arthur Miller, various characters endure a severe test of honestly, bravery, and goodness. Throughout the story, a series of events lead to tragedies, which involve these characters to make important decisions. If chosen incorrectly, it may lead to the death of another innocent person, or possibly even themselves. These events however, will bring out the true colors of everyone in Salem, whether they truly good or evil.
Honesty is more than not lying. It is truth telling, truth speaking, truth living, and truth loving.(Brainy QUOTES).Telling the truth is the ability for an individual to believe. It's a chance that is given for someone to solve the problem. The truth that is told along the bases of human life can range from lying and hiding the truth or being courageous enough to let it out. Their are people who can't find the right way to express the truth, because it just usually not appropriate to display it to the public. Struggling to express in the truth can give an individual the worry of being accused or judged by the given ideas. In the Crucible we can see that many characters struggle to tell the truth and hiding the ruth to be told at the
