How Does Autism Affect The Family

Autism spectrum condition affects a range of different individuals and is a spectrum condition and affects people in a number of different ways. It is important when supporting an individual with autism to identify and recognise each individuals’ abilities – what they can do successfully, needs – what the individual needs support with, strengths and gifts – what the individual is good at, what they have a real talent in, and interests – what is motivating for the person.

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is a complex developmental disability. I happen to have two nephews with autism, one who I am very close to and interact with a lot. A child is usually diagnosed with autism during the first three years of life. It is a result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, and affects the development of the person’s communication and social interaction

(p.1387) Reported as well is that substantial resources are spent providing treatment to children in families who have been diagnosed with autism and specifically stated is that the resources needed are "significantly more than for other children neuropsychiatric and developmental disorders." (Liu, King and Bearman, 2010, p. 1387)

Autism is a mental disability that develops as the individual grows and develops, it changes the way they view the world and how they interact and understand people, it affects each individual differently due to it being a spectrum disability meaning that there are many forms ranging from atypical autism to high functioning autism this makes it very hard to fully understand it due to a lot of differences. There are around 1 in 100 people who are classed to be on the spectrum, that equals to around 700,000 people within the United Kingdom and it affects more men than women, some people with autism will be able to function within society with slight support from the family, school and work whereas some will need specialist support throughout their whole life this is because there is no cure for autism their parents/ carers have to try to get the care and support they need to overcome challenges that people without autism take

Autism has affected many different families, in many different ways. More families with boys than girls, mostly because girls many of them may go misdiagnoesd or undiagnosed all together. Autism is tested for around age five unless the child is showing symptoms earlier than age five.

Communication for an Autistic person is extremely difficult, so ASD people don’t even speak, they use hand signals or gestures. Peoples with ASD have a difficult time in social settings, they tend to have outburst or become reclusive depending on the situation. Some ASD people require only 2-4 hours of sleep on a regular basis while others can go for up to 72 hours of no sleep, there has been few but some who can stay awake for weeks at a time. The reason for this is because ASD people’s brains don’t sleep, They never get into a full deep rem sleep because the activities in their brain continue to function on overload. Studies show that 1 in every 3 boys have some type of ASD spectrum, boys are more likely to test as ASD spectrum.

Autism can make a child act in a very different ways than normal kids. Some cases will be so bad that they will not even let their own mothers touch them. Since they will not let the parents touch them they will turn to something else to comfort them. A few things that they do is through fits, scream, spin around in a circle, and also roll on the floor. These things will comfort the child. Autism is a brain development problem

Once the individual with autism transitions into adulthood, the parents have the right to choose what is best for their child. If that is placing them with another sibling or even placing them into a home where they can receive better care that is up to the parents, but society looks at it as abandonment or that the parents just do not want the responsibility anymore. According to the article, What Happens When My Child with Autism Becomes an Adult with Autism?, by Dana Meijler, states “Let’s face it, while the media pounds us with messages of hope for people with disabilities and there are some truly remarkable achievements going on out there, the number of high functioning people with autism who live either without support of some kind or without loneliness and isolation is not very high”(Meijler 36-39). The media and society place such a heavy weight on families with autistic children or autistic adults. Depending on how severe the case is per child is how well their parents can base whether the individual can live on their own, be taken in by a sibling or family member, or placed in home for constant care. Most autistic children, but not necessarily all, cannot make it on their own and will always need to be under someone’s watch and care. As the child transitions into adulthood, parents can teach them basic life skills that may include the following: light cooking, cleaning, laundry, and even possibly driving. Due to confidentiality concerns some identifying information has been changed to protect the identity of those involved. BD is a 6 year old male who has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He is enrolled in an intensive behavioural intervention program at PS Center with an upcoming discharge scheduled in September of this year. This IBI program falls under the T*** organization and is fully funded by the Government of Ontario. Due to the age of the client his guardians make decisions regarding his care, education, program and treatment options.
