How Does Beowulf Show Courage

The story of Beowulf has many battles within the whole story. Whether it was fighting the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother, or even a dragon. Beowulf shows his courage and bravery in many situations throughout the story. He did not necessarily need to fight these battles because they did not threaten him directly, but instead he helped others and fought with them. Beowulf goes about each of the fights differently, preparing and fighting in different ways for each. The first battle comes when the Danes require assistance from anyone who can help them. Beowulf and the Danes gathered inside the meat hall resting and eating, when the monster that has been terrorizing and killing Danes comes. In this battle, Beowulf is able to really show his strength and courage because he fights Grendel, the monster, without any armor or weapons to protect himself. …show more content…

Beowulf was eighty years old at this point, the fifty foot tall dragon he planned to fight had a large amount of treasure in which it protected. He decided to fight this fight to give the treasure to the king of the Danes as payment. The king of the Danes gave Beowulf a magical sword called Naegling to use when fighting the dragon. Beowulf sets out to fight the dragon with eleven other men, but eventually they run away and all that’s left is him and Wiglaf. Wiglaf had never fought in a battle before this one. The dragon’s fire breath melts the sword that was given to Beowulf, causing him to have to fight without a weapon once again. When the dragon strikes and bites Beowulf, he is poisoned by the dragon’s poisonous blood. Wiglaf kills the dragon, and later is sent back to retrieve some of the treasure. Beowulf, before he dies, requests a barrow made in his name and also appoints Wiglaf the king of the Geats giving him reign over all the land that Beowulf had gotten over the years of
