The story of Beowulf has many battles within the whole story. Whether it was fighting the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother, or even a dragon. Beowulf shows his courage and bravery in many situations throughout the story. He did not necessarily need to fight these battles because they did not threaten him directly, but instead he helped others and fought with them. Beowulf goes about each of the fights differently, preparing and fighting in different ways for each. The first battle comes when the Danes require assistance from anyone who can help them. Beowulf and the Danes gathered inside the meat hall resting and eating, when the monster that has been terrorizing and killing Danes comes. In this battle, Beowulf is able to really show his strength and courage because he fights Grendel, the monster, without any armor or weapons to protect himself. …show more content…
Beowulf was eighty years old at this point, the fifty foot tall dragon he planned to fight had a large amount of treasure in which it protected. He decided to fight this fight to give the treasure to the king of the Danes as payment. The king of the Danes gave Beowulf a magical sword called Naegling to use when fighting the dragon. Beowulf sets out to fight the dragon with eleven other men, but eventually they run away and all that’s left is him and Wiglaf. Wiglaf had never fought in a battle before this one. The dragon’s fire breath melts the sword that was given to Beowulf, causing him to have to fight without a weapon once again. When the dragon strikes and bites Beowulf, he is poisoned by the dragon’s poisonous blood. Wiglaf kills the dragon, and later is sent back to retrieve some of the treasure. Beowulf, before he dies, requests a barrow made in his name and also appoints Wiglaf the king of the Geats giving him reign over all the land that Beowulf had gotten over the years of
After fifty years of what seems to be peace, the dragon appears to reign terror on Beowulf’s kingdom that he has taken power of. A robber had taken the dragon’s treasure that it was peacefully protecting prior to its terror. By this time, Beowulf is around ninety years of age. He knows it will be a tough fight, and therefore brings warriors along with him. After he calls the fierce dragon out of its cave, all but one of the warriors flee the scene. It is only Beowulf and a man named Wiglaf “Watching Beowulf, he could see How his king was suffering, burning. Remembering Everything his lord and cousin had given him,Armor and gold and the great estates Wexstan’s family enjoyed, Wiglaf’s Mind was made up”(Beowulf 107). Together, they slay the dragon, but Beowulf dies at the end too, making Wiglaf the king. The dragon was protecting the treasure and the thief did not steal for his own desire, it was for his masters in which he was beaten by “But the thief had not come to steal; he stole, And roused the dragon, not from desire But need, He was someone’s slave, had
Beowulf is a brave noble, later to become a king, who confidently vows to defeat Grendel. He not only kills Grendel, but slays the demon’s mother, and a dragon. Although he dies in battle with the dragon, he proved himself one of the bravest and strongest men in the kingdom. Wiglaf is a thane, and kinsman to Beowulf, and in him, Beowulf sees his younger self. Wiglaf shows the same bravery in battle as Beowulf, and assists in the destruction of the dragon. As Beowulf lies dying, he passes the kingdom of
He was defenseless and the dragon attacked him. He fell to the ground and was a beaten warrior. His elven warriors ran except for Wiglaf, was the only warrior to go back to his king. Beowulf and Wiglaf kill the Dragon. Beowulf was badly injured; he told Wiglaf to take the treasure and lead his people.
There Beowulf enters the cave to meet Grendels mother. Beowufl understood that the fight with Grendel was a tough one even though he was unarmed, he imagined that this fight would be more difficult. Beowulfs progress as a hero shows he understands his limits and doesn’t show off to be seen as mighty. He fights with Grendels mother, but sadly he is losing. His sword is broken by her and he would have died if it wasn’t for one thing. On the wall there was a huge sword, knowing Beowulf I can imagine he probably didn’t want to use it but in the situation he was in he didn’t care. He reached for the sword and slashed Grendels mother right on her throat and cut her head off. This still shows Beowulf as a mighty, ruthless warrior, showing no mercy to the beasts that come before him. Although that’s not all, he searched the caves to look for the run away Grendel to finish him off. He finds his dead body lying on the floor, where he goes and cuts his head off. In this fight he obtains 2 more “trophies” the heads of Grendel and his
Throughout Beowulf’s life many battles were fought. Although, by far the most significant to his story is his battles with the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and his last battle with the fire breathing dragon. I believe this because these three battles display how Beowulf changes from the time in which he battles Grendel to when he fights the dragon. In Beowulf’s battle with Grendel he shows how his mind is set on the glory and praise he will acquire if he wins the battle.
Although Beowulf lost to the dragon and the story seems to persuade the reader to believe evil has won, Wiglaf avenges Beowulf and saves the day. Wiglaf, in turn, becomes the new hero, successor, and king due to his
Alike many other fairy tales of Princes conquering dragons or other mythical creatures. Beowulf requests to fight alone so no other innocent person is harmed by the horrible Grendel. He is saving the Danes kingdom just like a knight or Prince would save a Princess. The final example comparing Beowulf to a fairy tale is learning a lesson from the characters. Beowulf is speaking to the king, “But I shall offer him the battle of a Geat in strength and courage.”
But this time it isn’t so much for himself and pride but for the protection of those around him. Beowulf fights alone in order to ensure the safety of his people, yet one man by the name of Wiglaf stays by his side. After fighting by Beowulf’s side Wiglaf experiences the person Beowulf really was. Although Beowulf dies, he takes the dragon with him saving his kingdom. After this, Wiglaf reflects on the person Beowulf was and what he meant to the village.
Beowulf shows numerous acts of bravery. He has gone through various battles throughout the book. He went through the battle with Grendel. This battle is where Grendel first arrives to the town. The second battle he faced was the battel with Grendel’s mother. The third battel was the last battle. Where Beowulf kills the fire expectorating dragon.
In this extract, Beowulf is seen battling the dragon with his companions, however, Beowulf’s companions all leave except for Wiglaf. Wiglaf expresses his loyalty and dedication towards Beowulf through a speech and bravely helps Beowulf. Beowulf then uses his sword to try and kill the dragon, but the sword snaps as it is made of iron. The dragon attacks Beowulf in which it succeeds, biting Beowulf in the neck. Wiglaf saw his king in danger and rushes to his rescue, knifing the dragon in its
The story of Beowulf is one of a great hero. Beowulf is a very generous person who is always willing to help out when people are in need. Over the course of the story, Beowulf ends up in three major battles: the battle with Grendel, with Grendel’s mother, and with the dragon. All of these battles were different in their style and the way Beowulf approached them was different. Beowulf also had different reasons to participate in each of the battles.
Beowulf could not defeat the dragon on his own and received help from that ancient sword of Grendel’s mother and a loyal warrior named Wiglaf. Beowulf could not win this battle as he grew weak after the dragon bit into his flesh. As Beowulf was close to death, the dragon passed sooner than him. When the hero finally took his last breath, Wiglaf ordered the kingdom to bury all of the found treasure with Beowulf in order to show their mournfulness and regret for not being able to save their King. The treasure was burned with Beowulf’s body in order to prevent those full of greed from taking the treasure and distributing it unfairly causing abuse and imbalance of power by those who did not deserve that treasure in the first
Beowulf and the Dragon squared off and began to fight. Beowulf was losing, he couldn’t keep up with the dragon and his armour and sword were not working. He was then greeted by a great Kinsmen named Wiglaf. Wiglaf was the only man to aide Beowulf in battle. He took the first swing at the dragon and injured his neck.
Later in his life, Beowulf is himself king of the Geats, and finds his realm terrorised by a dragon whose treasure had been stolen from his hoard in a burial mound. He attacks the dragon with the help of his thegns or servants, but they do not succeed. Beowulf decides to follow the dragon into its lair, at Earnanæs, but only his young Swedish relative Wiglaf dares join him. Beowulf finally slays the dragon, but is mortally
Beowulf’s courage is called once again, and this is the final battle. In this battle, Beowulf has to defeat a fire breathing dragon, symbolizing Satan. First of all, Beowulf is very old at this point. Once he heard about his home being destroyed, he left to fight the beast right away. “Then Beowulf was given bad news,/ a hard truth: his own home,/ the best of buildings, had been burnt to a cinder”(2324-2326). This shows how couragous Beowulf really is. Beowulf is a very old man at this point and his courage is too big and he has to defeat this monster for himself for destroying his home. Secondly, Beowulf fights the dragon on his own. In the poem the dragon is to be symbolized as Satan and he is ready to fight. “The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/ trusted his own strength entirely/and went under the crag” (2540-2545). Last of all, Beowulf is fighting the dragon and is nearly dead, Wiglaf had enough courage to come help. Beowulf and Wiglaf were able to defeat the dragon. “The noble son of Weohstan/ saw the king in danger at
