The protagonist of the novel is Yossarian as the majority of the novel focuses on what he encounters and goes through during the war. Yossarian is a paranoid captain during the war and he does not think the war effort and flying more missions is worth losing his life.
If anyone was to mess up, this type of leader can pick them back up and get their head straight. This leader is
Captain Fitz was a very young captain from an upper middle class family. He had a young face and dark, dark hair. Although he was only 20 and appeared to not be able to ever fully grow a beard, the shadowing cast of 6 months at sea began to show on his face in the form of tired eyes and scruff.
Of the four men, the captain was the only person who could not help row the boat because of his injury. In the beginning, he was described as being temporarily consumed by "profound dejection and indifference" (NA, 357) while directing his shipmates with a voice that was "deep with mourning...of a quality beyond oration or tears" (NA, 357). Like a general of a losing army, the captain felt as if the sea had been something that had defeated him. As a true leader, he nevertheless continued to encourage and guide his men in "the same steady voice" (NA, 367) and maintained a sense of order and peace on the boat. The captain knew and respected the sea's power, but he also saw the waters as a mission through which he was responsible for guiding his men, and that he had to persevere even if others gave up.
Nick Carraway is the first persona we are introduced to and arguably the most important; as he is the narrator of the book. He is a down to earth, non-judgemental man that comes from a wealthy family in the mid-west. Nick longs for excitement after returning from The Great War and decides to take up the bond business in New York. Nick is one
The captain seems that he has wisdom. He shows that he takes in both the good and bad of everything. Especially, being stuck on a boat in the Pacific ocean. He
Captain Nemo was a very mysterious character in the novel. He was a genius who had a passion for the sea. He created a submarine, The Nautilus, that used technology far more advanced than anything else of its time, in order to explore and to learn more about the oceans of the world. He was very curious and willing to learn. In 1866, ships around the world were being attacked by an enormous thing, faster and larger than a whale. It was larger, wider, and heavier than anything previously recorded in the history of fish. A group of men, on a boat called the Abraham Lincoln, set out to uncover this mystery. The ship collided with the “thing” and flew some men overboard, including Conseil, Ned Land, and professor Pierre Aronnax. These men were using something to float on in the water, and soon realized it was a submarine. Then, men with masks pulled them aboard. They were told that they had freedom on the boat, but they were never allowed to leave. Captain Nemo invited the men to go hunting, diving and exploring with him throughout the novel. Then, after 10 months aboard, the men decided they needed to leave. After several failed attempts, they managed to escape during a whirlpool. They got knocked out by a piece of iron and next thing they knew, they were safe on a fisherman’s
“I plead neither, I say you are unfit to lead the Cohorts. I say you are weak and that in your weakness, you endangered the Cohorts. I say you haven't the stomach to do what must be done. I say that you have your own agenda that you pursue to the detriment of the Cohorts. I say it is time for a new leader!”
At this point the Captain is unsteady in his new command but has good intentions. He keeps anchor watch one night, to the astonishment of the crew, as a gesture of benevolence. However, his attempt toward friendliness serves to alienate the captain even further because his crew is so taken aback by his actions. The Captain needs to show leadership in order to gain respect of his crew, but being his first time in command of a ship and being a stranger to himself he does not know how.
I recommend you read this book because it is written beautifully, weaving in and out of Stanley Yelnats’ generations, from his great-great-grandfather’s life to his own, and how they tie together. This is also a great book because the characters are so real, from the Camp Green Lake campers, to the Green Lake townspeople. There are many characters with very unique personalities. The kids from Camp Green Lake are very tough, like one of the kids Rex or X-ray is the leader, Magnet is a thief he got his nickname because he says his fingers are like magnets. There is also Zigzag, Armpit, Squid, and Zero. Zigzag, Armpit, and Squid are very muscular and tough from spending so many days at Camp Green Lake, they also are very loud and talkative unlike Zero. Zero is very silent and runs away one day, Stanley also runs away in search of Zero. Stanley also finds out that Zero was really the one who stole the shoes Stanley supposedly stole, by putting them on top of a car and the car was at an overpass when the
Jules Verne in Twenty Leagues Under the Sea, develops Captain Nemo by persuading Professor Aronnaxs the conversation they have. The ship is trapped in a ice wall they have nowhere to go they can not return the way they came cause the path closed behind the submarine. The Professor want to return when they get a chance but Captain
This situation is very complex, and there are several factors influencing the decision. There are three competing tensions and loyalties. First, there is loyalty to mission to pass an important command inspection, which failing would be a disservice to your ship. Secondly, there is a loyalty to trust your chief and sailors to do their job and the future relationships; if you don’t trust
The book revolves around the leader of a trans-Atlantic expedition named Ernest Shackleton, who distinguished himself as a hero. Shackleton’s ability to get his men out of the dire situation they were in is owed largely to the qualities he possessed as a leader. Shackleton’s capacity to be decisive but also willing to compromise and adapt had a large contribution to the crew’s survival. When the Endurance became locked in the icy jaws of the sea, the crew was forced to abandon ship and eventually make a perilous journey on lifeboats to South Georgia island. The plan was to make it to the whaling station but due to rough seas the men arrived on the wrong side, Shackleton was equipped to handle this change in plans and made the journey on foot. From Shackleton's own words “The rapidity with which one can completely change one’s ideas. . to a state of barbarism is wonderful.”
Ralph, the main character, discovers a conch shell, and when he blows it, all the other boys that were on the island come to the sound of the shell. This earns him the spot as Chief, much to the other main character, Jack's, dismay.
When the story begins the readers are immediately introduced to the narrator, Nick Caraway. He is a young adult who has completed an education from Yale and has arrived back to society from fighting in World War I. Nick has just moved from Minnesota to West Egg, where he begins working on Wall Street, selling bonds and learning the trades of the business.
