Domestic violence affects all cultures, countries and age groups. The victims come from all socioeconomic, education and religious background and this can be either in both same sex and heterosexual relationships. Children do get affected by domestic violence even if they do not witness it directly or get abused themselves {this can happen when they see their mothers crying or upset as a result of violence}. Furthermore, if a child decides to get involved it could cause them to either be hit or physically abused by the abusive parent. Teenagers have also reported to have been victims of physical, emotional and verbally abused from their own partners. Domestic violence mostly affects people with low social economic status For example, women who live in households that earns less than $ 10,000 per year are at higher risk of experiencing violence than those women in wealthier households. Some studies have shown that homeless mothers suffer more from physical and sexual abuse compared to low income housed mothers. Personally, I feel as if the stress of not having a lot or enough money could result in abuse. Also, youths from low-income neighborhoods have experienced extreme violence, such as higher rates of murder and stabbings than the youths from middle or wealthier
“Domestic violence is a type of abuse by one or both partners in marriage, friends, family, dating or cohabitation” (Aziz & Mahmoud, 2010). There are many forms of abuse from verbal and emotional to physical that often escalates over time in intensity for the victim. Data from the criminal justice system, hospital patient medical records and mental health records, police reports, surveys and social services reports of thousands of women revealed that many are injured and killed as a result of violence from someone close to them. “The US Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) defines domestic violence as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender” (Robertson & Murachver, 2009). Researchers and the criminal justice system have not been able to agree on a clear definition to domestic violence which can range from physical injury, stalking, verbal abuse and humiliation, denial of shelter and access to money, and intimidation through aggressive behaviors. The definition of domestic violence may vary but the results from physical injury, mental and emotional trauma, and sometimes even death can last a life time.
Most of the domestic violence reasons come from the conflict between women and men relationship; however, the women is the one who get beat up and injury “ Eight children and five women have been killed in sickening domestic violence attacks” (2, Withmore).

Within the American society many different types of domestic abuse that exist, but I will be discussing four of them. Physical, sexual, emotional and spiritual abuse. In the U.S 85% of women are physically abused compared to 15% of men. Physical abuse means inflicting pain on someone by use of physical force with the intention to harm them. Women between the ages of 18 and 34 may experience domestic violence at some point in their life. There are 38,028,000 women throughout the U.S that have been physically abused in their lifetime by an intimate partner, and 4,774,000 women that experience abuse daily (Vagianos, 2015). In the world there is a stereotype that only women are victims of domestic abuse, but men can also fall victim to this abuse. According to Psychcentral.com men are thought to be the only ones who abuse their spouse/partner due to the fact that they are stronger but, 33% of men have been abuse in their lifetime. Even though women are said to be weaker than men it is still possible for them to abuse men physically, by biting slapping or even destroying their personal belongings women also tend to emotionally abuse their partner more often
According to statistics found by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Every nine seconds a woman is abused by her husband or intimate partner. At least 1 in every 4 women and 1 in every 9 men have been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in their lifetime. Most often the abuser is one of their own family. Domestic violence is a problem that somehow affects every one of us in this room at some time and is actually the leading cause of injury to women -- more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined.
Social class plays a key role in everyday life of millions around the world. So it is clear that social class would play a role in domestic violence. Knowing that domestic violence knows no boundaries it is correct to say that wealth does not protect against violence. In the article Economic stress and Domestic Violence by Claire M. Renzetti from the National Online Resource Center on Violence against Women, they bring social class and domestic violence into clear view. One discussion in the article which we have to take into account when looking at social class and domestic violence is well put when she stats “the data we have about domestic violence comes from samples to which researchers have greatest access, such as individuals who use social services and these individuals are more likely to have low incomes” (Renzetti, 2009). With this in mind it is clear to see why there are so many articles on low income violence. As she states from a study done by Benson and Fox (2003) from analyzing data from the National Survey of Household and Families, the family income increases the likelihood of domestic violence decrease. It is becoming clearer that even though we know that domestic
Domestic violence is when a person employs violent tactics to control or harm their partner. These tactics often include physical violence, coercion, threats, intimidating, isolation, stalking, and abuse (e.g. emotional, sexual, economic, and physical). There are a plethora of studies that have attempted to grasp the magnitude of the problem through global, country-specific and even narrower investigations. [Figure 5] For example, the World Health Organization approximates that 35% of women around the world have been the victims of either physical violence from their partners, sexual violence from their partners, or sexual violence from non-partners.
