Globalization has been a part of everyone’s lives for hundreds of years. Globalization is the connections established between each modern society. Despite all of the hardships Maathai went through from the documentary it can be stated that globalization had a positive impact on Maathai’s life, the environment, the political system. First, globalization played a huge role in Maathai because of the westernized education she was able to receive. Globalization can be seen as a form of westernization. She was taught by nuns until she won the Kennedy scholarship and went to the U.S to continue her education. Once she finished there she went to Germany to get her PhD. Globalization has a positive impact on her life because she was able to take advantage of the westernized education that was not offered in her country. By doing so she become a nonwestern elite and able to fight for the people who was not educated to understand how the world works outside the country. Maathai showed the people that they most definitely have the power to change things. The Green Belt movement gave them a perfect reason to fight for them rights in the political system. All of the constant protests and action against the government in time paid off. It always started off small once people began to see them fighting for what is right people just joined in. It expanded to the point other nations began to see that there were problems within the political system and, they voiced their concerns on the issue. Elites from other nations wrote letter and called stating it was wrong for the government arrest people for what they believe is right.
