Literary researchers search far and wide and through many different topics in order to solve the riddle Shakespeare has lain before us. The topics in which these criticisms cover vary from how a character responds in just a short excerpt, to macro topics such as how Shakespeare himself was shaped and challenged from the environment he lived in. Critics even have a conflict with whether or not “William Shakespeare” is the true writer's name.
Being the product of the famous William Shakespeare, Hamlet is subject to a lot of criticism. The play has been devoured by questioning minds from start to end, and even beyond. Though there are many plots and sub-plots to evaluate, a certain question sticks out and plants itself into the head of the inquisitor: why does it take so long for Hamlet to kill Claudius? Several factors are required to be understood before anything can be determined. Arguments have been made that Hamlet is simply an extremely weak, powerless character. He makes his own decisions and appears to follow his own rules supported by his own beliefs.
In Hamlet’s time, society is bound by the belief that revenge is good. This belief is not just considered a positive, but is reasonable and justified on almost all levels.
Hamlet himself appears to be greatly affected and challenged by the society in which he lives in. He is challenged morally. The people surrounding Hamlet throughout the play seems to treat him like he is stupid and ignorant. They continuously spy and play mind games with him no matter how obvious it is or how many hints the man gives out. Hamlet even attempts to play mind games back, but the people he wants to include in on his mockery don’t even understand themselves.
