Change occurs rapidly and sometimes it seems that change is the only constant. The world experiences transformation everyday, and in most cases, for the better. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes the beginning of a change in the mindset of common people in America during the 20th century that has greatly benefited the whole nation. Also, with the newly legalised gay marriage in the United States, our society is becoming a more equitable and fairer place for all. Lastly, with the establishment of competitions and awards such as the Google Science Fair, the power and innovation of the young are being realised and harnessed for the betterment of the world.
Throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays the nation through the microcosm of the small town Maycomb and the courthouse. In the trial of Tom Robinson, the prejudiced and incorrigible townsmen charge him as guilty, to the surprise of the innocent Scout and Jem. Though greatly disappointed, Atticus Finch viewed it as a victory, citing the fact that the indictment took longer than expected as one of the jurors had argued for the innocence of Tom Robinson. Lee describes the change occurring in the mindset of the

A major victory was won by the LGBT community when the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was legal on June 26th of 2015 across all of the United States. This ruling effectively states that any state-law restricting marriage to male-female is unconstitutional. This had been a fight since the 1970s when the issues of same-sex marriage first began to gain steam. Over the years, various states have legalised same-sex marriage to certain degrees, however it wasn’t until after 3 decades that the issue was finally acknowledged on a national level. This change furthers the ideology of freedom and equality of the american constitution and will invoke the betterment of
Harper Lee, the writer of To Kill A MockingBird, builds an argument on how the jury in Maycomb court can acquit Tom Robinson, an African American who is the defendant in the court case; he has been accused of raping a white woman. She builds an argument through the character of Atticus. Maycomb is a town with racism and Atticus, a lawyer from Maycomb, defends Tom Robinson in the court. Harper Lee uses convincing elements, clear facts, and she arouses negative feelings from jury to support her argument.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird tells of a town in Alabama, called Maycomb. In this deeply-rooted racist town, there is a trial against an African American man, accused of raping a white woman. One man, however, Atticus Finch, has the opportunity to help the the man on trial. Although he knows he will lose the trial, he takes the case anyway. Atticus is respected in Maycomb, and known for his wisdom and experience. He is a good-hearted, egalitarian man who is always there and willing to provide guidance to his children and to the town of Maycomb, with his years of practice and experience.
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Many conservative groups do NOT agree with this decision. The gay marriage debate has been simmering for as long as I can remember. The four articles I have selected give information from four different perspectives including that of liberals, conservatives, homosexuals, and orthodox Jews. With so many differing opinions, one can understand why it's been so hard for the nation to come to agree on this issue.
On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court removed the ban on same-sex marriage nationwide. On July 15, 2015, Kenneth Jost published an article named “Will there be more gains after marriage ruling?” In this article, Jost discusses the viewpoints of the general public and argues that there may still be a struggle to gain full rights and respect for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. The article covers the reaction of the public on June 26, along with politicians stand-points on the subject, and the Caitlyn Jenner controversy. Jost’s main argument is that LGBT people are not being protected by the government, even though they have gained the right to marry.
The case Obergefell vs. Hodges reached the United States Supreme Court in 2015 (Oyez). This case dealt with the rights of same-sex marriages and became important case in our nation’s young history and in our society in general. The problem was groups of same-sex couples were being told that their marriage licenses were not being upheld to the same legal standards as those of heterogeneous couples. Therefore same-sex couples in Ohio, Tennessee , Kentucky, and Michigan went and sued these agencies in challenge of their constitutional rights (Oyez). They took their issue to court because they believed that the states were denying them their 14th amendment rights without due process. They couldn’t understand why their marriages license were not
History has an ironic way of repeating itself at times, the phrase “separate but equal” has rang through the ears of black culture millions of times, only for it to resonate itself within same-sex couples again. The debate of Civil Unions vs. Marriage was on the minds of many before 2015, when the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal nationwide. These Civil Unions that had existed only until recently was just the rationale used over a century ago for the same purposes. Both had the intention of having equality, but through corruption and misunderstanding, it was never fully achieved. Thankfully, just as the African Americans protested for their rights, the LGBT community also followed suit and won their rights, but not after a long
To Kill a Mockingbird is an acclaimed novel written by Harper Lee. Within the novel, Lee portrays the thematic idea of prejudice and injustice against African Americans in the South during the 1930s. A character in the novel, Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of committing a treacherous and horrendous crime . However, Robinson is innocent but due to the town’s prejudice against African Americans, he is convicted of the crime anyway. The town’s bigotry towards people of another skin color allows them to accept the injustice dealt to Robinson. Through Bob Ewell’s dialogue during the trial, Lee illustrate the prejudice through and the injustice toward African Americans, that runs rampant in the fictional town of Maycomb in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jem, Scout and Dill’s innocence are destroyed from the ignorance and racism witnessed in their hometown Maycomb. The children’s view of the people in their town changed after spectating the Tom Robinson trial. Tom was a black man convicted for raping a white girl and although the evidence was on Robinson’s side, he was found guilty and was sentenced to death. Scout, Jem, and Dill witness discrimination and injustice for the first time.
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird follows the story of a trial in the Southern town of Maycomb. Specifically, the novel highlights Atticus, the defendant’s lawyer, and his family, as they face criticism from the rest of town. The defendant, a negro named Tom Robinson, was put on trial for raping Mayella Ewell, a white member of the community. While To Kill a Mockingbird shows the ugliness that can come from judging others, its ultimate message is that great good can result when one defers judgement until considering things from another person’s point of view.
In the summer of 2015, history was made in the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court of the United States. The Court had made, with a 5-4 majority, a controversial ruling decreeing that denying equal recognition to same-sex couples was in violation of the Equal Protections Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Those on the minority cited concerns of judicial restraint, the connection between marriage and procreation, and whether or not marriage is a Constitutional issue in the first place. Nevertheless, equal recognition for same-sex couples became the law of the land.
The injustice of Tom Robinson’s trial convinces Jem and Scout that racism blinds the jury and the people of Maycomb. The metaphor “to kill a mockingbird” becomes clear with the experiences of the defendant in court. When all members of the jury conclude the guilt of Robinson based on his race, the siblings are in disbelief of the wrongfulness of the jury’s mindset. The trial itself teaches them about what it means to accept one’s duty to do the right thing, regardless the outcome. After the loss of the first trial, Atticus receives more respect from the negroes and some of the white folk in
In the past few decades, the question of allowing for same-sex marriage is a recurring topic of controversy. In the houses of same-sex couples, the need for equal rights is of great importance. Currently, many states ban the marriage of same-sex couples and do not view a marriage between same-sex couples as an official marriage. These states quote the Constitutional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Therefore, with this definition, the marriage of a man and a man or a woman and a woman is unconstitutional. As of the issue date of this article, the Supreme Court had not made a national decision on same-sex marriage and the benefits entitled to that marriage. This CQ Researcher journal focuses on the topic of
The political aspects of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to federal and government recognized marriages are a very complex issue. There are basically two sides to the political argument of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. On one side are the liberals who feel that marriage is a civil right that should be denied based on the basis of a person's sexual orientation. On the other side you have conservatives who feel that marriage is an institution in which should only constitute one man and one woman. In this report we are going to examine how the issue of same-sex marriages are affecting our current political environment, how politics is affecting the movement for
Same sex- marriage is still the topic of many peoples conversation across the country. Citizens, divided by politic party, are very passionate about how they feel about it. The president didn’t approve of it at first, but now he finally accepts same- sex marriage, the Judicial System uses its power to dictate to the States, forcing them to accept same- sex marriage. Both houses of Congress continue to debate what marriage means.
On the date, June 26th, 2015 the United States Supreme Court had legalized the right for same-sex marriage to be legal in all states. As the LGBTQ community and supporters celebrated this amazing accomplishment that they have waited for so many years, there are still ignorant people, who believe that same-sex marriage is not moral and there is no love, like a typical marriage between a man and a woman. The LGBTQ community continues to display that same-sex marriage is okay and love that they show for their partner is the same love between man and woman. In the article, “Gay Marriage Is Legal, but We’re Still Not Equal”, written by James Esseks had stated that even though same-sex marriage is legal in the United States, it doesn’t mean that the LGBTQ community gets treated equally like everyone else. He expresses how that the LGBTQ community should have the same human rights that everyone else has in the United States. He included that there are still problems that still occur when any couple from the LGBTQ community that get denied rights, even though between a heterogeneous couple have.
