How Does Harper Lee Present The Theme Of Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird Harper lee presents the theme of courage through several of the characters within TKAM, such as Scout, Atticus, Calpurnia, and Mrs Dubose. Within the book courage is shown in different ways such as Scout’s innocence and naivety or Atticus’ reluctance to carry out an action but still having to carry it out. One character to show courage is Atticus who shows courage twice as he shoots Tim Johnson and stands up to the lynch mob to defend Tom Robinson. The Tim Johnson incidence occurs when a dog (Tim Johnson) has rabies and is acting like a ‘mad dog’ and ‘walking dazedly’ so Atticus, although reluctant, has to shoot him. Also, the fact that the ‘roses on her hat trembled indignantly’ shows that she is angry and shows courageousness as she is trying to stand up on behalf of the children but is infuriated by Lula, but as she tries to hide her aggression from the kids shows that she is courageous. Also she defends the children by saying ‘They’s my company’, this acknowledges the fact that Calpurnia is standing up for the children and shows courage as they are being denied entry to the church. The effect of this on this on the reader is that instead of following the racial divide between the African Americans and the Caucasians she is trying to include the children in her way of life and therefore going against social convention. This would take courage as she risks becoming excluded from her community and this shows courage as she tries to show an alternative way of living for Jem and Scout. The final character which shows courage is Scout, the main character of TKAM, as she defies the lynch mob from killing Tom Robinson. From this scene, the reader learns that scout’s innocence and naivety makes the mob realise that what they are doing is wrong. When Scout says ‘Hey, Mr Cunningham’ she doesn’t realise the severity of the situation but with her being the youngest of the lot she still denies the mob the chance to murder Tom Robinson.
