Would you do the right thing if you had the choice? In the cult classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses internal conflict and symbolism to portray the message that courage is not always about honor and winning. In this story Scout and her brother Jem must face issues growing up in the south, their moral standards battle against social expectations and they must learn right from wrong. In the To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme courage is not always about honor and winning is extremely prevalent. Throughout the story Atticus says and does courageous things, because it is the right thing to do, even if others don’t agree with him. On page 114 after being asked if he was a “Nigger-lover” by his Scout, he replies saying, “I certainly am.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, there are several external and internal conflicts. The most common conflict throughout the book is character versus character. For example, when Scout finally entered the first grade her teacher, Miss Caroline, is not happy with Scout because she already knew how to read which created a battle between Scout and Miss Caroline’s opinions. Scout also had a spark of conflict with Atticus when she demanded that she will not attend school anymore because of Miss Caroline; Atticus disagreed. Character versus nature is another external conflict demonstrated in the novel. For example, Miss Maudie is conflicted with fire as exemplified when the narrator says, “We stood watching the street fill with men and cars while
Atticus was the defendant in the Tom Robinson case, and he proudly stood up for Tom. He was called a “Nigger lover” throughout the book because he defended Tom. “What kind of parent would I be if I didn't defend him, sure I was assigned his case but if I didn't try my best to defend him then I couldn't tell anyone else what to do.” Throughout the whole thing Atticus resembles a mockingbird, he is innocent and he is defending an innocent man. Jem and Scout also experience this in a way many people including
Atticus, who is a loving person all around doesn’t care about what color you are, or how you dress, Atticus will always respect you. He does get insulted and harassed all the time because of it. He gets called “NiggerLover” a lot, even people he respects like Mrs. Dubose said, “Don’t mutter at me boy! You hold up your head and say yes ma’am. Guess you don’t feel like it holding up, though, with your father the way he is.”
In Part 1 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces Atticus Finch as a father who rejects ideas or practices of racism. At school, Scout hears Cecil Jacob shout that her father, Atticus, is defending ‘niggers’. Later that day, when Scout asks her father what Cecil meant, Atticus explains that he is defending a Negro named Tom Robinson. Scout was stunned by his unexpected response. When Scout asks why, Atticus responds, “I’m simply defending a Negro… for a number of reasons. The main one is if I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (86) By accepting Tom Robinson’s case without a single argument, Atticus really shows his civility towards Negroes, even when they are not respected by anyone else in the state. Atticus seeks to treat Tom as an individual while rejecting racism in all forms, both language, and behavior. Not only does this show his belief in racial equality, but it also shows his courage.
Conflict can be a disagreement or an argument between individuals or communities, for example different ideas or interests can result in conflict. Conflict can be used to describe physical combat or verbal opposition between people. To Kill A Mockingbird is set in 1930s South America; this was the time of the Great Depression after the American Stock Market collapsed in 1929. Times were hard and there is a lot of poverty in the novel, even the Finches are not wealthy. Harper Lee presents conflict in the novel through many different aspects; one of these ways is how prejudiced the white communities are towards the black communities. A factor contributing to people’s
Atticus demonstrates courage multiple times throughout the novel when working on the Tom Robinson case and when he stands up to the men at the jail. Before he even took the case, Atticus knew that he would be criticized for helping a black man. He is brave, however, and does what he believes is right. Atticus tells his children, “I wanted you to see what real courage is….It ’s when you know you’re licked before you begin
and Mahatma Gandhi. This is because Atticus was against racism, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela were, and this is shown when he defends Tom Robinson in the trial, despite expecting to lose because Tom would have been charged as guilty since he was black. He also demonstrates being against racism when he tells Scout that repeating the derogatory name people in Maycomb County called the Negros was wrong and didn’t deny to be the derogatory name people called him before the trial took place and stated that he loves everyone. Like other great people, Atticus was brave enough to stand up for what was right and face the consequences. While great people faced assassination and threats to their families’ safety, Atticus faced threats from Bob Ewell and his attack on Scout and Jem.
How does the writer build tension in this scene? In this essay I will be discussing how Harper Lee builds tension in 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' The book is set in the 1930's, a rather unpleasant and discriminative time period and this book is a clear example of this. After the children follow Atticus in to the town, Jem starts to have second thoughts and wants to return to the safety of their home to protect his sister and his friend whom he takes great responsibility for.
After the trial and when they killed him at the jail trying to escape with his only hand, Atticus comes with the death news about Tom and Scout was confused and Atticus explains, “Depends on how you look at it… What was on Negro, more or less, among two hundred of ‘em? He wasn't Tom to them, he was in escaping prisoner,” (Lee 315). As the reader can see, the way that Atticus expresses his explanation to his daughter and right in front of Calpurnia he doesn’t seem as a racist because of the fact that he was on Tom’s side or defendant. He said what was better for everyone in public without affecting anyone's feelings. As what it equals, Atticus thinks straight and can win his respect and his identity gating better and being recognized as the person he should be. People can say what is truth without offending anyone and making their identity better in life.ally was saying is that it would not have make a big difference to kill another negro out many that there are still around. And by having respect around black people makes him a better person having a deal his identity about no matter what others care, to do what is best for him and succeed, with the people he knows and that supports him. As shown itself, identity can be changed/affected with good actions around other race that are fighting for
Atticus shows that courage in standing up for justice and fair treatment is the right thing to do. Atticus goal was to help a black male named Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a white girl by the name of Mayella Ewell. Even though Mayella knew Tom Robinson was innocent she feared her father and made up a story so that she would be safe in the eye’s of others. In doing so Atticus is considered a “nigger lover” because he chooses to help a black male seek justice for a crime he didn’t commit. In chapter 3 Atticus states that, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (To kill a Mockingbird).
Has there ever been an event that has changed your life? When you’re a kid, you see things through a child's eyes. As you get older, your mindset changes as you gain more experience. Therefore, at some point in your life, you will have a coming of age moment. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem, his younger sister Scout, and Dill, a friend from out of town that visits every summer, share an experience that changes their outlook on the world. Together, they create a new mindset for themselves based on their experience with Dolphus Raymond, the town drunk, when they realized that he was not really what they thought he was. Through these characters’ experience, Harper Lee uses the literary elements of internal conflict, imagery, and characterization to develop the theme that people are not always who you think they might be.
Being a lawyer, Atticus wanted to help out everyone who deserved it. Even if that meant having others talk badly of him, and ruining his reputation with society. Recently his daughter Scout had come to an age where she's been subjected to these rumors about her father. In the beginning of chapter 9, Scout asks Jem what a “Nigger” is, which Jem replies with nothing and to ask Atticus. Even with Scout not know what a “nigger-lover” is, she still defends her father.
“You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?”(11.107-109) “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody. ”(11.107-109) Atticus and his housekeeper Calpurnia took a different view point and faced the criticism in full wrath from the rest of the town. Atticus was a humble man who raised his children to
One character quality that describes Atticus is morally upstanding. He is consistently considerate of other people’s feelings while remaining professional. When Scout asks Atticus if he is a nigger-lover, he says he certainly is and he does his best
