Would you do the right thing if you had the choice? In the cult classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses internal conflict and symbolism to portray the message that courage is not always about honor and winning. In this story Scout and her brother Jem must face issues growing up in the south, their moral standards battle against social expectations and they must learn right from wrong. In the To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme courage is not always about honor and winning is extremely prevalent. Throughout the story Atticus says and does courageous things, because it is the right thing to do, even if others don’t agree with him. On page 114 after being asked if he was a “Nigger-lover” by his Scout, he replies saying, “I certainly am.
