How Does Lee Use Prejudice In To Kill A Mockingbird

Today, many people are faced with different forms of discrimination and prejudice. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee tells the story of Scout Finch as her family, her friends, and herself as they endure and encounter different types of prejudice such as getting ridiculed for being a tomboy, racism, and reverse racism. Scout does not wear dresses because she can “do nothing in a dress” ( Lee 92) so instead she wears overalls or pants. She also goes to Finch’s Landing and starts to cuss around her Uncle Jack; when he asks her does she want to “ Grow up and be a lady,” ( Lee 90) she tells him “ Not particularly.”( Lee 90) When she does wear a dress for Aunt Alexandra and the missionary circle; she gets ridiculed because she tells them she wants to grow up and be a lady. Dubose says her father, Atticus Finch is “ In the Courthouse lawing for niggers,” since he is defending Tom Robinson. They also go through racism because when she goes to the First Purchase African M.E. Church with Jem, her brother, and Calpurnia, Lula asks Calpurnia why she is “ Bringin’ white chillun to nigger church,” ( Lee 135) because “ They got their church, we got our’n” ( Lee 136). Mixed children also have to deal with racism because Jem says they “ Don’t belong anywhere,” because they are “ Half- white, half- colored.” ( Lee 183) African- Americans also have to deal with racism because during Tom Robinson’s trial, Atticus gives a speech saying Tom has “ To put his word against two white peoples,” because they wanted the jurors to “ Go along with them on the assumption- the evil assumption- that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women.” ( Lee 232) Even though Tom Robinson was convicted because he is colored, Scout learns that even though everyone in the town thinks colored people are not similar to them they are,in fact, very
