As I spent the day participating in a stream clean up I realized several things. The well-being of our streams directly impact so many aspects of our environment. Just one thing off in the delicate balance of an ecosystem can cause devastating effects that can last many years. Trash thrown into a stream directly affects, not only the creatures that live in the stream, but it also affects the animals that rely on the stream for survival. Polluted water is no longer suitable for fish; such as the Rainbow Darter, and even crayfish will not survive in polluted water. This in turn affects many animals that survive by eating crayfish and other fish, not to mention all of the animals that depend on the stream as their source of drinking water. Eventually more and more birds and animals, including humans become impacted negatively by the pollution. When streams become polluted people can’t take advantage of the opportunities a stream has to offer. We can no longer fish, if any fish survived the polluted water, they are more than likely not safe to eat. In many instances even swimming is no longer safe. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was creeking. I would spend hours in a creek flipping over rocks looking for whatever creature may …show more content…
I can’t help but question whether or not these people realize the negative impact they are creating or if they just don’t care. I would like to believe that people just don’t realize what they are doing because we can do something about that. What are we able to do to change the minds of people that don’t care? How do we convince them that our environment is worth far more than the five dollars they are saving by not disposing the tire properly? I honestly do not understand this mindset, I realized the importance of our environment when I was a little
Located near Cowan, Pennsylvania, Conley Run is a tributary of Buffalo Creek that has experienced severe degradation due to agricultural activity. Specifically, the deposition of large amounts of animal wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers has resulted in significant eutrophication throughout the stream. Furthermore, bank degradation associated with the movement of livestock has caused the displacement of foreign sediments into stream habitats. These factors, among many others, have caused the lake to be considered “impaired” by PA-DEP. In response, the Buffalo Creek Watershed Alliance, the the Union County Conservation District, and the Department of Environmental Protection and Fish and Boat Commision have partnered in an effort to restore stream habitat and create a riparian buffer to protect the stream.
Although the amount of pollutants from a single town or construction site may seem insignificant, the combined concentrations of contaminants threaten our lakes, streams and wetlands. When things such as: human and animal waste, decaying plants and animals, discarded litter, or food waste enter surface waters, either dissolved or suspended in stormwater runoff, they can deplete the supply of dissolved oxygen in the water. When dissolved oxygen is reduced below a certain critical level, it can impair or kill aquatic plants and animals (CNYRPDB, 2011).
Extensive amounts of litter were observed both in (figure 8) and around the creek, this aspect of human interaction clearly is degrative within this environment Increased flood risk due to surface impermeability this disrupts the water cycle and increases subsequent erosion
On October 6th 2015, the students of Mattawan’s AP Environmental class took a trip to the local stream of the Mattawan Consolidated Schools area. The purpose of this trip was to conduct a stream study to determine the health, conditions, and pollution levels of this small body of water. A multitude of factors came into play when making a judgement on the stream’s health, and making sure to take all of these essential points was crucial to the study. A variety of thorough experiments were conducted to help make this overlying conclusion, as many students adopted many roles in the study. Students used a physical survey form, water test data sheet, and taxa recording sheet to record their findings. Teamwork was essential in making sure all of this information could be found accurately and efficiently. The combination of all of the final results allowed the class to make a judgement of the stream’s state.
On April 6th 2013, our Biology II lab evaluated the health of two freshwater streams in the Denver area. Both creeks flow to the South Platte River but are situated in different environments (urban and suburban) which cause variance in biotic and abiotic indicators of stream health. The presence or absence of bioindicators is dependent on the water chemistry. Through the study of stream health, we can gain insight on the stress that humans cause to freshwater habitats. I think that Bear Creek is healthier than Cherry Creek because it is in a less urban environment and is less affected by human influences. If the
It has came to mind that the Big Sioux River located in the Eastern Part of South Dakota is a very polluted river. It is so polluted that its the 13th highest polluted water source in the United States. Therefore the people around this river, this is a very important to the people around because this is there main water source. People may ask why is this river so polluted and its because of the toxic waste from us humans. Every time you go to the bathroom all this waste ends up going into the river and even when you take a shower all the chemicals that go in your hair or for your body from the soap end up going into the river.
The polluted water supply that results can become harmful to humans. Aquatic life quickly suffers the effects of watershed pollution.
My only hope is that we can stop this polluting of our waters before it is too late. It is only a matter of time before these pollutants start affecting the food that we fish out of these waters and put into our bodies. Who is to say that a contaminated fish would not in turn make the person that eats that fish sick as well. It is already fact that 40% of America’s rivers and 46% of America’s lakes are already too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life. (Grinningplanet.com) Let’s take the steps to make sure that percentage does not get any worse.
There are many other structures and techniques that are used in the field of stream restoration. The use of riprap is a common technique and there are examples of its use locally in San Diego. Additional structures may serve other purposes such as directing flow or providing habitat. Woody debris, for example can provide habitat to many animals. Root wads from trees provide excellent hiding areas for juvenile fish. The stream restoration design and stated objectives will determine what type of structures will be required to meet the stated project goals.
A stream, as a natural phenomenon has no intention to harm anybody, it simply follows the laws of physics. Just like the stream, society follows certain laws and stays friendly and supportive as long as one fits into it and follows its trends.
When you think of problems in the world today, water pollution isn’t one that would normally come up. In fact it is one of the worst problems in the world today. Water pollution, by definition, is the contamination of streams, lakes, underground water, bays, or oceans by any substances harmful to living things. All living things contain water and most need water to survive, so water pollution is a big problem. If severe, the pollution can kill off birds, fish, and any animals that use the water source. In some cases even killing an entire species.
“I am the Joker,” muttered James Eagan Holmes. The last words the victims heard the night Holmes committed mass murder in the Century 16 movie theatre still haunt the living victims and countless other citizens of Aurora, Colorado. It is compelling how someone attempted to rationalize his actions with such an elementary phrase, which once had no meaning at all. The claim seems nonsensical and slightly amusing solely because he is implying he committed the crime on the basis that he is the arch nemesis of famous comic hero, Batman. Statements like these alone do not make an intriguing court trial. The men and women sitting on the jury for weeks on end need entertainment just to stay conscience enough to finish the trial.
From reading over the vignette it is evident that Cynthia's insight on her current illness appears to be poor and her judgment was deemed impaired by the LCSW that assessed her. She was in complete denial about there being any issues, she refused any testing or treatments and stated she would decline to be a "trained seal, guinea pig, Mr. Ed, and a barking dog". Her lack of understanding and acceptance of her mental illness has prevented her from seeking the treatment that she needs. It is important when developing treatment plans for clients to understand all aspects of the client such as; genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors in order to understand the underlying causes. Different people experience major depression differently. Therefore, the major thing that needs to be taken into consideration is that people of all ages , races, and social classes can be diagnosed with depression.
Water pollution impacts how humans and other living organisms live their life. Most common way humans are effected by water pollution is through diseases while drinking the water. Scientists have found over “five hundred different types of diseases” that can affect humans. (Book). These diseases get into the water streams by human and animal wastes. The diseases in the water can often lead to death for humans. Recent research has shown that that each year
Water pollution has had devastating effects on the environment, which include irreversible effects to the ocean's ecosystem, health problems and abnormal conditions.
