How does personality affect benefits received from use of social media sites?

Over many recent years an increase in online social media use and growth has been noticed (O’Keeffe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011. Bergman, 2011); with this we as a society have seen a change in being and behavior. Due to this, investigations have been taken under way to highlight the effects of social media and its correlations with an individual’s personality. The field is being narrowed down to focus mainly on the adolescent stage of life. This essay explores the current benefits of social media, the bases of personality, how an individual’s effects what benefits come out of social media along with a literary review of studies.
Firstly, social media needs to be defined. Social media sites can be defined generally as virtual communities (Kuss & Griffiths, 2011). They are mainly used to create individual profiles that help people communicate with other individuals worldwide (O’Keeffe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011). A few of these sites known for these particular elements include Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; all used to share an individual’s life moments with others.
