When you here the word poverty is society today, you automatically think about third world
countries and the people who are living in conditions not fit for life itself. We do not stop to think
about what is happening in this country.
The definition of poverty takes 2 forms, Poverty Org.uk states that absolute poverty refers to a
set of standards which is the same in all countries and which does not change over time,
whereas relative poverty refers to a standard which is defined in terms of the in which the
individual lives. In Britain when we take about poverty we are looking at relative poverty and
how this affects the children living within Britain and the education they receive.

Poverty can have a profound impact on the child, their family, and the rest of society. It often
sets in motion a deepening spiral of social exclusion, creating problems in education,
employment, mental and physical health and social interaction.
Does this mean that the system is failing these Children? Is this because there is a never ending
circle where if you are born into poverty, you will never know anything else and continue to live
in poverty. Another theory is that if your parents are under achieves you will under achieve and
so will future generations
The Joseph Rowntree foundation states that in the west midlands that on average 33% of
children live in relative poverty and that when you look at the level of education within these
areas the number of children that achieve GCSE’s on leaving secondary school is less than
50%. This may be because these students struggle at school and if their parents were low
achievers they will not be able to offer the right support to their children to achieve the standards
needed.
Ofsted (2005) stated that there is a strong link across every sector between deprivation and
poor quality provision. Areas with higher deprivation are more likely to have schools in an
ofsted category of concern than more advantaged areas. This could be because everyone living
in a catchments area for a school are
There is two main types of poverty, absolute poverty, and relative poverty. Absolute poverty is when a house hold takes in less than one U.S. dollar a day, meaning that they will not be able to buy food nor be able
Poverty affects over 767 million people in the entire world. In the United States alone, poverty affects more than 42 million people. According to feedingamerica.org, of that 42 million affected, 13 million children and over 5 million seniors live in poverty. Poverty is grouped into two different categories; absolute and relative. Wikipedia.org defines absolute poverty as the absence of enough resources to secure basic life necessities. This includes not having safe drinking water, not having clean bathroom facilities, not being able to get proper healthcare, not having access to education and not having proper shelter. Absolute poverty is also referred to as living in extreme poverty. Relative poverty, according to wikipedia.org, is the condition in which people lack the minimum amount of income needed in order to maintain the average standard of living in the society in which they live. The meaning of poverty varies from country to country and person to person. For example, while some people in the United States would be considered as living below the poverty line, a person from another country may consider that person rich. However, poverty is simply when an individual is unable to meet their basic needs. This includes not being able to clothed, house or feed oneself or one’s family. Poverty is a problem that will not be easily solved. There have been many attempts to try and end poverty, but yet it continues to grow. In a country such as the United States that’s
There are serious pockets of child poverty at a local level: in 100 local wards across the UK
“What is poverty? Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom” (The World Bank, 2009).
33% of students who are currently on free school meals achieve 5A*-C at GCSE, however 61% of students who are not on free school meals also achieve 5A*-C grades. 90% of the failing school are from deprived areas, and 79% of children from a higher professional family are more likely to go to university, whilst only 15% of children from unskilled and manual backgrounds go to
What is poverty? Poverty is not simply a matter of low income flow. Poverty can be generally categorized as the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/poverty). There are two types of Absolute poverty where individuals have no access to the basic necessities in life including food, water, clothing, shelter and Relative poverty occurs when people do not enjoy a certain minimum level of living standards as determined by a government that vary from country to country, sometimes within the same country (Brunswick and Canada, 2010).
To look at this issue, a working definition of poverty is needed. As Dr. Williams posed in our class “What is Poverty?” (Williams, 2016) A good working definition comes from Conley”s book. He writes, “Poverty can be defined as a condition of deprivation due to economic circumstances. In this condition a person cannot live with dignity in his or her society”. (Conley, 2011) Poverty can and is divided into two distinct categories. These categories are important in understanding what situation that person is going through.
Many factors contribute to poverty in the United States and all over the world, however, the definition of poverty varies in each location. In the US, sleeping in your car and living on a few dollars a day is considered extreme poverty, however, in some countries, finding water and food to eat every day is a blessing and they don’t have a few dollars (Sullivan, 2016).
In the UK the definition used for absolute poverty is a household living on less than 60% of the median household income. While this is described as absolute poverty the way that it is measured against other incomes is, arguably, relative poverty. Whichever definition of poverty this figure should fall under, this definition will be used to determine whether poverty has been eliminated.
From doing some research on my chosen topic of poverty, I have learned many things that will help me with my work towards children in the future. Theorist such a Maslow and also The Foundation Phase have both more knowledge on children. From understanding both Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and The Foundation Phase I will be able to provide better opportunities for children in the future. Both of these theorist answered many of my questions which were raised. From doing some independent learning into how poverty affects children in both their education, their social development, their health and more, I came to understand that the Welsh government are doing many things to help provide for the children within their schools. Many services have been
In economically developed nations such as New Zealand, poverty is conceptualised as “relative” rather than "absolute". The Solutions to Child Poverty report describes child poverty as: “those who experience deprivation of the material resources and income that is required for them to develop and thrive, leaving such children unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential and participate as equal members of New Zealand society.” (Children’s Commissioner Report [CCR], 2012, p. 2.).
Spicker & Guizamen et al Gordon (2007) twelve clusters of meaning of poverty evidently proved how the definition of poverty seems difficult to be established, the debates on poverty have been bedeviled by an artificial formalism, which insists that there is only one agreed meaning of poverty. However poverty does not attract a single meaning.
In the U.S. children raised in poverty tend to miss school more often because of illness. These
Socio-economic factors are widely acknowledged as important determinants of poverty. If an individual experiences adverse living conditions in childhood, majority of them will have inadequate income and result in low socio-economic status as adults (Carroll et al, 2011). Children born in poor households have difficulty in accessing the basic needs (e.g. food, clothing, and good living environment) and this can affect their learning ability at school, unable to focus. In other words, they have a higher chance of dropping out of school or lower education attainment, unable to provide appropriate qualifications when they move onto adulthood, seeking for job opportunities. These children are finding day-to-day life tough, they are living in cold, damp houses, do not have warm or rain-proof clothing, their shoes are worn, and many days they go hungry (Children's Commissioner, 2012). Often this has taken place over a long period of time, impacting on their development, behaviour and physical health furthermore limiting their potential as they grow into adults.
Poverty can be defined in two ways, which are absolute poverty and relative poverty. In terms of absolute poverty, Murray (2004:2) suggests that the lack of an adequate income and cannot gain access to basic necessities to provide for basic human needs-food, clothing, warmth and shelter- are a clear indication of poverty. In a relative way, there was an assumption that a certain standard of living was normal, and that those living below this, while they might not be starving or homeless, were certainly poor, which are called relative poverty (Murray, 2004).
