Christianity is a major religious tradition due to the institutionalisation of Christianity in Australia; it has remained the major religious tradition. The Immigration Restriction Act 1901 allowed European immigrants, bringing a majority of Christian adherents and ensuring the demographic stay. With the release of the White Australia Policy in the 1950’s and its elimination in 1973, Australia has been increasing in a diversity of faiths, however mainly remain Christian. However Christianity deceased later on due to the introduction of other mainstream religions due to migration. Large, traditional churches such as the Anglican and uniting church have lost many members due to the ageing population, low birth rates and movement to non-religion. Catholic remains steady due to immigration, however Eastern orthodox members are rising due to immigration and it is these churches that have a young profile.
