Mr. Scrooge the grumpiest man of all time, but can he change? If he can, what will we see from him that we didn’t at the beginning? If he doesn’t what will happen to him?
At the beginning of the story, Scrooge isn’t really happy. He hates everything in the world. The one thing that he cares about is his money. Greed is the thing that drives him to be a lonely monster that nobody likes. When his business partner Bob Marley died, and his Girlfriend broke up with him. A Change for the Better Published in 1843 A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens has withstood the test of time as a classic telling the story of Scrooge as he changes for the better. He is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, showing him his life in segments as this happens, he finds the good in himself and changes his ways. Scrooge has changed significantly throughout the text, specifically through his actions, thoughts, and dialogue. To begin, Scrooge changed through his actions. At first, Scrooge was a parsimonious, rapacious, and niggard person who was selfish and was to above himself to care about others and their needs.
Change molds us in life and makes a deciding impact in our future. In A Christmas Carol, three spirits visit Scrooge for the better. Scrooge’s character transforms to be grateful, generous, and kind.
On page 23-24 of A Christmas Carol it states, “‘Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence was my business. The dealing of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensible ocean of my business!’” This shows me how Marley explaining what the true meaning of “business” was, was the first step to helping Scrooge participate in this business rather than his interpretation of business. After being visited by the Spirits, Scrooge does start living by the true meaning and is happier than ever. As it states on page 114 of A Christmas Carol, “‘I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school boy, I am as giddy as a drunken man.’” This shows me how once the true meaning went into Scrooge’s heart he became free of his greed and very happy with himself and his
But, as I know your promise is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear you company, and do it with a thankful heart” (Dickens, 51). Now Scrooge is transformed into a new man and will never be a hateful, rude, cold-hearted, and covetous person ever
Throughout “A Christmas Carol” Scrooge was a really mean, hateful, selfish mister, I felt like he would never change, he was a man you wouldn’t want to hang out with. Scrooge became, to me the worse guy and the most selfish. Then, Scrooge went from being a hateful mister to a genuinely good person. He, was visited by The Ghosts Of Christmas Past, then Present, and lastly by Future. The Ghost Of Christmas Past visited Scrooge.
At the end of the book Scrooge is Scrooge is a greedy, selfish, mean, cruel person. He realizes that and changes. “‘You’ll want all day tomorrow, I suppose?’” said Scrooge ‘If quite convenient, sir.’ ‘It’s not convenient,’ said Scrooge, ‘amid it’s not fair.
