How Does Scrooge Change Throughout A Christmas Carol

‘A Christmas Carol’ covers a period of 24 hours from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day. It is a simple morality tale of the radical change in the character Ebenezer Scrooge from being bitter, ironfisted and miserable to becoming a new, openhearted and charitable man.

The book A Christmas Carol was writ by Charles Dickens. In the book Ebenezer Scrooge went through substantial changes. First, he went to his childhood neighborhood and got emotional. Next, Scrooge went with Ghost of Christmas Present to his old house and saw the family having a good time. Then, Ghost of Christmas Future appeared and they went to the beading shop seeing all of Scrooge's stuff being sold, but he didn’t know it was his stuff. Lastly, he was in his bedroom looking at all his stuff and saw his gravesite.

In Scrooge And Marley: A Christmas carol, Scrooge is sent three ghosts from Jacob Marley that helps him change. After being reformed by the spirits of Christmas Scrooge becomes friendly, nice, generous, considerate, and an all around great person. First, The Ghost of Christmas Present retaught Scrooge the generosity and respect he had to know long ago. The spirit had shown Scrooge when his old boss Fizziwig through an enormous party.

He is guided by three spirits, as they conduct him on his travels through time, teaching him to move beyond his earlier cruelty and hatred of mankind. With the guidance of the spirits, Scrooge learns the true meaning of family, love and Christmas. The spirits all influenced Scrooge in unique ways and taught him different lessons. The spirit that was the most significant in Scrooge’s transformation was the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

This causes Scrooge to change for the greater good; as soon as he finishes the encounters and time-traveling with the 3 ghosts of Christmas, he then goes to dinner with the family (I forgot their last names).

When the ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge, it shows him his old boss, Mr. Fezziwig. As the text says, “I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk now.” (pg. 46) That basically means he wishes he were more like his old boss, and not so selfish. Then, when the ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge his ex-fiancee, he remembers why he was bitter, greedy, and selfish in the first place, which definitely was a setback in his character development.

A Change of Heart In the book, A Christmas Carol, the author, Charles Dickens, explains an old man who is hateful, rude, cold-hearted, and very covetous named Ebenezer Scrooge. In the story, Scrooge gets offered the opportunity of a life-time; to change his attitude and behavior and become a better person. He gets a second chance at life and he takes that chance. The cruelest man became the kindest and it was all because of four ghosts.

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is about a selfish and grouchy man named Ebenezer Scrooge, who dislikes Christmas and charity. In order to fix his undesirable qualities, Scrooge is visited by three spirits, the Spirit of Christmas Past, the Spirit of Christmas Present, and the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come. These three spirits use their differences and similarities to teach Scrooge lessons that would change his egocentric ways. The first Spirit that visits Scrooge is the Spirit of Christmas Past, a peaceful, wise, and kind character.

The author demonstrates this change by both plot, and direct and indirect characterization. Some examples of changing in plot, direct, and indirect characterization include the two ghosts of present, and future, revealing his and other people’s lives. After the visits from the ghosts the author shows how and what Ebenezer Scrooge becomes.

One night, the ghost of Jacob Marley, a former colleague of Scrooge, who has passed away seven years ago, visits the old man. Marley reminds Scrooge of his cruel lifestyle and encourages him to change it before it is too late. He tells Scrooge that three spirits will visit him.
