How Does Shakespeare Influence Today

William Shakespeare was a poet, writer, and actor most well known for his various plays such as Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer’s Night Dream. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language, as well as ‘ahead of his time.’ His plays are performed all over the world for a variety of audiences, and reinterpreted in many ways. Historians believe he lived from about 1564 to 1616, and during his life he married and had three children. In addition to his family, he wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and few narrative poems. During the time of Shakespeare’s life, approximately 3000 plays were shown on the London stage. The theme and plot of some of the most popular of those medias is directly drawn from the plots of Shakespeare’s plays. Popular books such as Moby Dick, Love in Idleness, and A Thousand Acres all have plots derived from Shakespeare’s plays (O’Reilly). Moby Dick shares plot ideas with both Macbeth, and King Lear. Just as Macbeth and King Lear subvert the natural order of things, in Moby Dick, Ahab takes on nature in the quest to reach his prey, though it is doomed from the start. Love and Idleness is a modern reworking of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. They share the themes of confusion, heartache, and eventual resolution. Both expose the frailties and inconsistencies in the pursuit of love and marriage. A Thousand Acres is a modern day retelling of King Lear. In the book a father and his three daughters live on a large farm: however, instead of proclaiming the two older daughters as wicked, A Thousand Acres explores the family secrets that underpin the drama (O’Reilly). Because Shakespeare’s works are some of the most timeless and creative, authors today often turn to his work as inspiration. Movies today also very accurately tell the stories in Shakespeare's work. Shakespeare has contributed to the English language with words, phrases, and his own name. He has influenced media and pop culture through books, movies, and music. Lastly, he has influenced the business world with Henry V that teaches leadership, teamwork, and involvement. Shakespeare not only made famous works, but inspired other works, and this has given him an enormous advantage in standing the test of time. His works have been reinvented and reused in many ways that target different specific purposes. Shakespeare has remained relevant in our society for over 400 years, and because of his many contributions and influences, it is likely he will continue to be relevant for many more years to
