People today think they have to worry about everyone else’s business on social media and when they do, it can lead to people feeling bad about their lives or physical appearance. Social media causes depression, leading to cyber bullying and lack of sleep and this happens because parents aren’t understanding the emotional problem. Many kids think it’s “cool” to have every social media app on their phone. They compete, show off, and fight with each other on these apps, what’s the fun in that? There is no fun in this nonsense and they are causing themselves to not be the people they really are by all the distractions from their apps. People focus too much on trying to be someone they really aren’t, or they get jealous, or get bullied because of …show more content…
Dr. Cleland says, “Adolescence can be a period of increased vulnerability for the onset of depression and anxiety, and poor sleep quality may contribute to this. It is important that we understand how social media use relates to these. Evidence is increasingly supporting a link between social media use and wellbeing, particularly during adolescence, but the causes of this are unclear.” When we are tired we can get unfocused, then we don’t complete a task, when that happens people can feel bad about themselves and feel anxiety or depression. Teenagers spend more time on their phone then they are getting sleep and they are complaining, having anxiety because they have lack of sleep. Many teenagers are not getting the required sleep every night because of the distraction on our phone. Kids are spending every second of the day and night on their phones that they don’t have enough time to do anything else. Therefore, they don’t have enough time to do activities to get their minds off stressful things. When kids are rushing to get tasks done because they don’t have enough time they want to quit, when they quit they feel ashamed of themselves and can cause failure. Teenagers are spending too much time on social media when they could be doing other things that keep them healthy, like
Therefore, children’s addictions are growing, causing their health to decline, while also making it easy for their privacy to be invaded. The article “Exploring associations between social media addiction”, by Xinhong, ZhuI, et al, talks about how technology affects sleep quality and health in students. The article mentions, “A total of 19.9% of respondents suffered from sleep disturbance. A total of 15.6% of participants had sleep durations less than 5 h, and 21.6% of subjects had sleep durations longer than 9 h” (Xinhong 1). Students’ lack of sleep can greatly affect their academic performance, and social interactions, as mentioned on page 2 of the article.
In the article, Robinson demonstrates how while technology has many benefits, it has a plethora of downfalls. Social media is ruining our perception of the world, from people editing their photos to look better, to people lying about who they are. 97% of teenagers are on social media, and about 37% of social media users report feeling upset or having negative thoughts after using apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Lawrence Robinson, the managing editor and author at HelpGuide.org states, “Ironically for a technology that’s designed to bring people closer together, spending too much time engaging with social media can make you feel more lonely and isolated—and exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.” (Robinson 2).
Just like the creature in Frankenstein, Social media has damaged and killed many people in its path. Social media has become a feeding ground for cyberbullying which has now become the leading cause of depression, substance abuse, and pre-adolescence suicide in the United States today. Cyber bullying is any aggressive act repeatedly causing harm to another through websites, blogs, emails, texting, social networks, photographs, video games, etc. Cyber bullying isn’t just peer to peer bullying, Americas youth is being bullied by the companies who sponsor these apps themselves. These companies are contributing to the mental health issues such as depression caused by forced body images and low self-esteem. Both parties are doing this by using Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and many other apps where most of teens today
Social media sites are a few of the most visited sites every day. Everyone wants to know what everyone else is up to. People can follow their favorite celebrities every move and see what their friends are doing with every update. Few people go days without checking their online profiles on popular social media sites such as, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Many people joined these networks to keep up with old friends from the past and keep contact with everyone in their life and young people use them every day to check status updates and post selfies. In the article, " The upside of selfies: Social media isn't all bad for kids", Kelly Wallace claims that social media has a positive effect on young people. However, research shows that social media impacts young people’s emotional health negatively.
There are 2.3 billion active social media users (Kit Smith 1). Meaning the majority of people go on social media every day. Social media is almost a part of every teen’s life it’s how they stay connected and meet up with people. But social media may be worse than what most people would think. It’s leading to much worse things for teenagers that they won’t see coming since social media is a huge part of their lives. Social media’s negatives outweigh the positives because it’s causing long-term consequences and impacts teen’s mental and emotional health.
In the article “Constant Social Media and Teens’ Mental Health” Alan Mozes theorizes that ninety percent of teens all around the world use social media. Meaning that this could be affecting their mental health. Adolescents are now vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and sleep deprivation due to social media use, says psychology administrator, Heather Cleland Woods. The article asserts that 467 people were asked about their social media use, what times of the day they use it, and the pressure they feel when they can not respond to a message. The tests show that those who were more involved and somewhat addicted to social media have the greater chance of depression, anxiety, and poor sleep. This test refutes that cutting the use of social media
Today, social media is used by almost all teens. There are so many unrealized negative effects of online apps that adolescents do not know about. In my paper, I wrote about how media can affect many parts of life. One of the quotes that helped demonstrate the great effect was written by Andrea McDaniels, “Studies have shown the around-the-clock world of social media takes a mental and emotional toll on some young people; it has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and decreased relationship skills”. This showed the many different parts of life that can be impacted by onlinemedia. Overall, this research was inspiring to begin making change by bringing awareness to the numerous mental health risks associated with social media
However, these positive factors can be highly addictive. As mentioned before, social media can be very competitive and can lead to developing obsession to “win” or just an obsession with social media in general. Addiction and obsession of the internet has been proven to lead to sleep deprivation, which is connected to many mental illnesses. Scientists say depression, anxiety and high stress are all symptoms of sleep deprivation. Lulu Chang writes of University of Pittsburg's research that says, "the social media habits of 1,700 adults between the ages of 19 and 32 and found that those who spent more than an hour a day on social media or tried to fall asleep to their news feed were more likely to suffer from sleep disturbances." The Telegraph explains that those who struggle with sleeping can easily develop mental illness due to increased stress levels and chemicals that are released by the frontal lobe of the brain when it has had a severe lack of sleep. Social media has the ability to significantly impact mental and physical health because of it’s addictive qualities, leading to potential harm of an individual’s well being and to those around
In our society today, social media is a monster because it has created unrealistic social expectations and unhealthy relationships with ourselves and others. Social media has become a central platform to everyone in our society today and can cause many problems for a large portion of the users. Many of the problems that associate with social media can cause mental and physical harm to users such as, depression, which can lead to suicidal thoughts or actions, eating disorders, and even lowered self-esteem due to the unreasonable comparisons that people make when compared to popular and successful people. One major issue that social media has brought up is the exploitation of the anonymous identification which bullies use to hide from their victims. This can single handedly cause the issues that was recently stated. The social media crowd is now influencing young teens and kids to do drugs. It causes a sort of pressure for some adolescents to engage in illegal activities such as, smoking and drinking. This can be a real danger because they are too young to realize what they are doing to their bodies and could truly put their lives in danger. Social media also causes a learning deficiency in a large portion of students. These students are constantly on their phones and it takes their full attention away from the task at hand. This causes procrastination of assignments and can lead to lower grades. They are not disciplined enough to control themselves and stay away from their
Social media does not only have a negative effect on the brain of an adolescent, but also the sleep one may receive. Most adolescents send a text message before they go to bed and keep their phone close to their bed or under their bed so they do not miss important messages throughout the night (Lenhart, Ling, Campbell, & Purcell as cited in George, 2014). A survey with over 900 pupils between the ages of 12-15 were asked about how often social media affected their sleep. In the study it was stated that one
The use of social media and the role it plays in the life of an adolescent: specifically an increase of depressive symptoms, anxiety, disruptive sleep patterns, and at times conflict filled family relationships are dynamics that are still actively researched. Parenting teenagers in the digital age does not come with a how-to manual and there are no easy answers. However, there are trends and longitudinal studies that support the following hypothesis’: 1) The adolescent’s brain is undeveloped and influenced by the depth of it’s social network. Isolation, particularly in females can cause an increase in the ideation of suicidal thoughts, further, mental illness and sociability share a commonality. 2) Professionals such as pediatricians or trusted professionals should be a resource to help parents navigate the use of social media and their adolescent. There are pros and cons to the use of social media and striking the correct balance is not a simple task. 3) Social media use specifically at night, interferes with sleep patterns, quality of sleep, will to exercise and an increase in anxiety and depression. This impacts a person across a spectrum, from grades to interactions with family members.
Not only is technology poorly impacting people’s physical health, but their mental health is being jeopardized too. Social media does more harm than it does good, people are more at risk to mental health disorders when they use a social media platform. Honor Whiteman states in her article, Social media: how does it affect out mental health and well-being, “53% of participants said social media sites had changed their behavior, while 51% of these said the change had been negative.” (Whiteman). Social media can lead to insecurities and make people think poorly of themselves. Social media is also a major culprit of cyber bullying, it was never really an issue until more and more adolescents and teens began to use technology more. Along with self-image issues, kids see models posting photographs of themselves and think that they must look exactly like them. Celebrities are sometimes by young, impressionable minds drinking or doing drugs online, this can provoke children to do hazardous activities like underage drinking or smoking.
How is technology impacting teens’ mental health? It’s no secret that technology is a necessity nowadays, and the popularity and dependency is only growing. This is especially seen in teenagers. The question we need to ask ourselves is how is this dependency affecting our health and overall well being? Teens need about 9.5 hours of sleep a night. However, less than 20% of teenagers actually achieve this, according to a poll from the National Sleep Foundation from 2006. Due to the immense growth in popularity of technology, it can be assumed that this number has fallen in the last 11 years. Sleep deprivation can make people more irritable, tired, and susceptible to illness. Teens feel pressured to be reachable 24/7, and therefore stay up later in order to be able to talk, play games, watch videos or
Did you know social media can change you? Social media can cause problems with your health? In the article, “Student examines negative effects of social media on teens” by Aurelie Krakowsky and “The Upside of Selfies: Social media isn’t all that bad for kids” by Kelly Wallace talks about social media, but clearly it’s harmful to people. Social media is for people to enjoy on a daily basis and be updated on what is happening in the world; however it can be harmful to your health and even your education. It can lower kids self esteem and make them feel uncomfortable about themselves. It can also cause health issues and distant yourself from the people around you.
Studies have shown that the average person now spends more time each day on their phone and computer than they do sleeping according to Nick McGillivray (“What are the Effects of Social Media on Youth?). Social has become part of our social society, especially for the many youths. There are positives to being on social media and also equal amounts of danger that come with using social networking sites, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. These social networking sites also have effects on today’s youth by altering the way they behave, the way they learn, in not only a classroom setting but also in the real world setting, and the way that they socialize with their peers and others.
