Firstly he creates a calm but harsh setting as he describes the scenery of the lakeside. He starts the chapter with a beautiful description of a heron and a snake in a captivating scene. However, at the end of the description, the heron plucks the snake with its ‘periscope head’ out of the water and swallows it. This hints at what is to come and helps to create an atmosphere.
