How Does Technology Affect Our Lives?

1. What role does technology play in US society in relation to bias, discrimination, and power? What specific examples of discrimination related to race, ethnicity, gender, and disability can you see in our society that has been enabled or exacerbated by technology?

During the 1800’s, when people couldn’t find the answer to a question, they would spend days and weeks trying to find the answer. Now-a-days, whenever we need to find an answer, we can just go on the internet and look it up; thanks to the advancements in technology. Technology is merely a tool and what you get out of this tool is determined by how you use it. It was assembled to make any given activity easier or more effective. Just as we control the tools we use for a garden or the tools used to build a house, technology is also controlled by us. Authors Nicholas Carr, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, Jonathan Franzen, “Liking is for Cowards”, and Peggy Orenstein, “ The Way We Live Now” all demonstrate how we live in a world where the internet and social media plays an important role in our society solely because we allow it to. Some will argue that technology has impacted our lives negatively, yet fail to acknowledge how it also impacted us positively as well.

At our house, currently we have the main hub of electronics in the living area that did not exist 100 years ago. From a flat screen television, a laptop, printer, desktop computer, Wi-Fi, iPhone, cable boxes and to run all this electricity.

Technology has become an essential part of life in the last few decades, and it is often needed for work, school, and accessing information. With the rising need for technology, people have started to wonder whether it is improving or harming their quality of life. The rise of technology is improving people's lives, as it improves relationships between friends and family, can increase free time, and access to technology makes timing more efficient.

In today’s society, the development of the internet has taken over how we interact with others and live our day to day lives. There are many different perspectives on how exactly this new infrastructure effects our society as a whole. Miller asserts the question “in a world where our interactions are increasingly mediated through online technologies, are we becoming less practiced in the art of face to face conversation?” Other authors and artists of the generation agree with Millers beliefs; however, they discuss them from varying points of view that help us fully formulate an idea of how interconnectedness through technology negatively affects our society.

As technology has made massive strides over these past few decades, almost nothing has been left untouched. This increase of technology has affected every area of our lives, and education is no exception. Education has always been viewed as the traditional classroom schooling, but this is changing. Education is growing, and with the increase of technology, so is online education. Technology has played a key role in the evolution of our life over the years. Since the early 1980’s the use of technology became popular by demand. The creation of robots has been the most considerable piece of technology to date. Creators and scientists have worked together for years to perfect the future of robots. Recently inventors have released samples of the new age robot, most of which are in the Humanoid form. From chauffeurs to an at home companion, the new ideas and plans for robots will become a necessity rather than a luxury. The use for robots has inclined and is on the rise continuously.

The question we would like to ask is how does technology (most importantly ICT) influence our way of life*? In recent decades, mankind has experienced major changes in telecommunications technology, therefore changing how people behave within their environment. When it comes to lifestyle and our cultures, technological development and the products that resulted from them had in the past the primary function of making survival easier. But, in the modern world there seems to be a shift from using technology for survival to using technology as a platform for the development of new methods of communication and entertainment. Technology occurred before the human kind and it has improved people’s lives positively and negatively. The influence of technology is really great that it has absolutely changed our lifestyle. Computers, the Internet, Gadgets all these things have transformed our working system completely and our productivity has increased unbelievably. As everyone knows with every positive that have to be a negative, technology is really great, but it also has a huge affected every part of family life. We are spending more time indoors than we are outside. The time we spent on the computer, watching TV, and other electronics drive is about 8 hours a day. Don’t get me wrong, I love computer and all the technology we have now, with every new invention coming out I have them all, Apple Watch, iPhone7 Plus, iPad, new Apple TV, and new headphone, most of my product is around Apple because I love the company they produce a good product, good design, and it last for a long time. On June 29, 2007, about 9 years ago, when the first generation of the iPhone came out, people will wait outside the stores to buy it. Technology is defined as “the practical application of knowledge, especially in a particular area...” (Merriam-Webster, 2016). But what do we define as “practical application?” In today’s world, technology applies to just about every aspect of our daily lives: school, work, and social media...Has it gone too far? Is it being applied to, too much of our lives? Today’s students have access to hundreds of social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, Ifunny, and Pinterest are just a few examples. Often finding it hard to resist the temptation to check it every now and then. “Every now and then” turning into every ten minutes, to forgetting what they were doing when before the got onto their phones, technology has introduced many distractions in a college student’s life.

Technology is an ever expanding forefront that continues to push the limits of mankind 's capability. As humanity has grown, we have continued to expand technologies at the forefront of our needs. With every development we create, more issues are discovered. Developing communities may be the biggest challenge we face today, it is said that every day a city the size of Seattle is created. The population of these cities are faced with challenges that are far different and much more diverse than yours or mine. We live in cities have been laid out for decades, with an infrastructure for us to adopt and adapt. These developing cities often lack infrastructure which leaves the population to solve their own problems with ingenuity.

Many years ago everyday life was much different, generally a day would consist of time consuming chores that left little free time to engage in things such as hobbies, interests or even just time to relax. People were almost limited to whatever their physical capacities were and would not travel far from their homes for work, or leisure. All this has changed dramatically as new technologies developed. The definition of Information technology in its broadest sense encompasses all aspects of computing technology. I.T “is concerned with issues related to advocating for users and meeting their needs within an organisational and societal context through selection, creation, application, integration and administration of computing technologies” (Lunt. Et al 2009). Although some still dispute that technology has improved our lives, or even argue the opposite. Today’s society offers a much more convenient and efficient day-to-day existence due to one wide-ranging factor. Information Technology has greatly improved our lives due to key factors such as globalisation, education and health.

People are connected to technology on a daily basis regardless of the time nor place. There are new apps that are around that regulate and monitor the time spent on cell phones to ensure one is getting that face to face interaction with others. It almost seems as if technology has been turning people into walking zombies. Since peoples are not able to get enough of that face to face interaction, they are lacking in their social skills and tend to be nervous when the are in that face to face interaction with another. Technology is all around us, the clothes we wear, the homes we live in, and the way we get our food and water, are all due to technology. From the time we come into this world till the time we leave, technology is part of who we are and what we do, yet we take for granted the inventions that make our lives a little more comfortable, happier, and a little less lonely. Through technology time and space seem to diminish; creating a connection between people that otherwise would not have existed. Once a piece of technology becomes part of everyday use, it melds into people’s lives seamlessly and future generations won’t know a time without it.
