Decent Essays

In the story “The Wife of Bath’s Tale”, Chaucer's main purpose is to show that people can change overtime. Chaucer is showing how the knight was a terrible person and paid for his punishment, but in the end he changes who he becomes. The story says, “He saw a maiden walking all forlorn ahead of him, alone as she was born.” (Chaucer 31-32). At this point he has spotted a young maiden by herself and he approaches her. He traveled everywhere to every house to find the answer. He found an old woman who would tell him the answer as long as he marries her. The Knight approaches the Queen to give her his answer. He says “ A woman wants the self-same sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him; he must not be above her” (Chaucer 184-186). The Queen spares his life and now he must wed the old woman. The Knight changes because it says “ My lady and my love, my dearest wife, I leave the matter to your wise decision.” (Chaucer 376- 377). This changes the Knight because he realizes that all women want is power over the man. He let her decide whether she wanted to be young or old for him. The knight then lets the woman decide to be young or old so that she’s happy with her decision. She decides to be a young and faithful woman. The knight and the young woman are happily in love.
