The moon affects Earth in more ways than one may believe. It is responsible for the tides of the ocean with its gravitational pull which proves how powerful it really is. It has been questioned for many decades if certain phases of the moon influence human behavior or not. Humans can be affected by each lunar phase differently, but the full moon phase is the most effective. Human health is greatly affected by the full moon because of the gravitational pull resulting in an increase in various crimes and hospital visits.
The moon has always been connected with mythical stories and superstitions, but the full moon is the most dominant in affecting human behavior. For years, first responders and medical workers have always suggested that the full

According to research, “there was an increase in the number of admissions during the full moon, especially in men and in patients experiencing variceal hemorrhage” (Zimicki, 2006). Even though research proved that there were specific causes of emergency room admissions like in the number of men and patients with variceal hemorrhage, the main reason for emergency visits during the full moon is people who usually do not actually have something medically wrong with them. The full moon heightens their paranoia of medical problems that they believe they may have, and they are more apt to act on it during this time. Another specific reason for emergency room visits during the full moon is from animal bites, “the full moon was also associated with a significant increase in animal bites to humans observed in 16,621 patients attending an accident and emergency department during 1997–1999” (Zimicki, 2006), which explains why emergency rooms would be more frequented during this phase of the lunar cycle. This justifies why medical workers indicate the negative effect of the full moon on people because of all the visits to the emergency room during this time without a valid
The first reference to the moon in seen in Chapter 1. “‘We must strive to be like the moon’ an old man in Kabati repeated” (29). Beah often heard the old man say this phrase. However, he did not understand what the old man meant. When he presented the quote to his grandmother, she tried to explain it to young Beah. “I remember asking my grandmother what the old man meant. She explained that the adage served to remind people to always be on their best behavior and to be good to others… But, she said, no one grumbles when the moon shines. Everyone becomes happy and appreciates the moon in their own special way” (29). The moon symbolizes happiness. When the moon is shining, no one is sad. The moon brings happiness and joy it all those who witness it. It is a reminds that a person
238,900 miles away, the earth’s moon is one that is truly unique. With a given age of about 4.5 billion years the Earth serves a major role in real life and in the book Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. When catastrophe strikes, Earth takes a turn for the worst and great natural disasters occur. Thousands die, but there are a number of survivors. If there are survivors, how beneficial is the moon actually? What would happen if the moon had been destroyed? How necessary is it for human survival? The Moon, is a great benefactor to human survival because of the benefits earth gets from it.
1.“‘We must strive to be like the moon.’ An old man in Kabati repeated this sentence often to people who walked past his house on their way to the river to fetch water, to hunt, to tap palm wine; and to their farms. I remember asking my grandmother what the old man meant. She explained that the adage served to remind people to always be on their best behavior and to be good to others. She said that people complain when there is too much sun and it gets unbearably hot, and also when it rains too much or when it is cold. But, she said, no one grumbles when the moon shines. Everyone becomes happy and appreciates the moon in their own special way. Children watch their shadows and play in its light, people gather at the square to tell stories and dance through the night. A lot of happy things happen when the moon shines. These are some of the reasons why we should want to be like the moon.” (Beah 29)
The myth explains that the Grandmother became the moon and presides mostly in the Night because her favourite twin, the left-handed twin, represents the night.
As a boy, Ishmael has heard stories and proverbs about the moon. An old man in his village would say, “We must strive to be like the moon.” (Pg. 16) Ishmael’s grandmother explained that no one complained when the moon was present. Children would play and
The Moon was the wife of the Sun. It was believed that an eclipse was the result a great serpent or mountain lion trying to eat her. To frighten off the creatures, they would point their weapons at the moon and start screaming and shouting at it.
Many, many cultures associate the Moon with certain deities according to their traditions, relating the energy and influence of the Moon to the aspects of the deities. One lunar God was the Egyptian god of magic and wisdom, Thoth. Thoth was considered a lunar deity, that’s why he is often seen wearing a crescent on his head or with a head of an Ibis or baboon, both animals being considered sacred to him. This Egyptian God was a very important deity and he was known as the messenger of the Gods as well as the God of magick and wisdom.
The origin of the Moon is, with quite certainty, one of the most bewildering matters that scientist still attempt to uncover. Although there is a certain theory that is currently favoured, Wizard and Muggle Astronomers from throughout the world are aware that this mystery is still not yet fully uncovered.
The moon is by far the biggest and most easily recognizable object in earth’s atmosphere that can be perceived by the naked eye on a cloudless night. It is hypothesized that it came into existence nearly 4.5 billion years ago, from residual debris after a planetary body collided with earth. Although, considered the runner-up to the sun as the second brightest object in the sky, its illumination is deceitful, insomuch as the moon is not a source of light, but instead reflects the sun’s illumination from the half of the moon that is in direct alignment with the sun at that time. More readily identified as a satellite of the earth rather than as a planet itself or even a star, it has a diameter a quarter of the size of earth’s size and it
Kelly, Rotton, and Culver report that Caton examined 45,000,000 births and found a weak peak around the third quarter phase of the Moon, while the full moon and new moon phases had an average or slightly below average birth rate.In 1959 Walter and Abraham Menaker reported that a study of over 510,000 births in New York City showed a 1 percent increase in births in the two weeks after full moon. In 1967 Walter Menaker studied another 500,000 births in New York City, and this time he found a 1 percent increase in births in the two-week period centered on the full moon. In 1973 M. Osley, D. Summerville, and L. B. Borst studied another 500,000 births in New York City, and they reported a 1 percent increase in births before the full moon. In 1957 Rippmann analyzed 9,551 births in Danville, PA and found no correlation between the birth rate and the phase of the moon.A fifteen month study in Jacksonville, Florida also revealed at least no lunar effect on crime and hospital room admittance. In particular:There was no increase in crime on full moons, according to a statistical analysis by the Jacksonville Police Department. Five of the fifteen full moons had a higher than average rate of crime while ten full moons had a lower than average rate. The
Superstitions were not taken so seriously by educated people as plain people did, but both types of people were thoughtful moon watchers. Farmers did each of their tasks based on the the phases of the moon. They had superstitions that if they work on the right tasks during their corresponding moon phase, then they will have successful
For example, if it is believed that during the full moon occurs an increase in emergency room admissions, realize revenue during the full moon, but it will not pay attention to the moon when income occurs for other nights the rest of the months. A tendency to do so eventually unjustifiably strengthens their belief in the relationship between the full moon and accidents and other lunar effects. This tendency to pay more attention to data that support our beliefs that the data that counteract them is especially harmful when beliefs are nothing more than prejudice. If our beliefs are firmly established in evidence and valid experiments, the tendency to pay more attention and weight to data that conform to our beliefs not should take them, usually
comment: Why does he say be like the moon if the adage is pertaining to the people's behavior when the moon is out?

In an article published in the British Medical Journal Volume 289, C Thakur made the hypothesis that "human tidal waves" cause increases in crime rates due to the gravitational pull of the full moon. I feel that the evidence for this theory is decidedly inconclusive, and should therefore not be taken seriously. Thakur calculated that incidences of aggressive behavior spiked in the three cities which he surveyed around the time of the full moon. He then goes on to conclude that humans are unaware of the effect the moon has on our bodies that have high water content. However it is entirely possible that the pleasant weather could have encouraged more people to leave their home, and the higher visibility could have emboldened them. Ultimately,
