Identity changes the course of one’s life, a brave person will choose a life of adventure and a strong person will fight for justice just as seen in the two short stories The Two Brothers and By Any Other Name. In The Two Brothers two brothers discover the path to happiness and it’s a hard one. They learn they must cross a river, steal a bear cub, and climb a mountain to find the happiness that awaits. The eldest brother believes it’s too risky but the youngest of the two embarks on this journey and discovers a kingdom where he becomes king. He lives a life of adventure and joy until his kingdom is conquered and he returns from the mountain, reuniting with his brother. As the youngest brother in The Two Brothers reflects on his life of adventure …show more content…
The youngest brother reveals that he is satisfied and lived a life of memories. He has many unique experiences because he was brave enough to climb the mountain. This is what he means by no regret, the choices he made were good ones. The story is all a metaphor for life as well. The forest, bear, and river are symbols for challenges we face and just like the younger brother in the story our sense of adventure and wonder carries us to our happiness and dreams on top of the mountain. The youngest brother’s perseverance through the obstacles leaves him with no regrets and happy moments he can always look back on. His bravery and love for adventure drove him on this path and shaped his life. The Two Brothers shows how bravery changes your life, By Any Other Name shows how strength does. As two Indian sisters attending a British school Santha and Premila are constantly stereotyped in the story By Any Other Name. They put on a brave face and persevere through it until the day Premila is automatically deemed a cheater due to her race. She doesn’t sit idly by through this and instead bursts her way into Santha’s classroom to retrieve her, before leaving the
There comes a point in time in an individual’s life in which their name truly becomes a part of their identity. A name is more than just a title to differentiate people; it is a part of the person. In Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim, names play a major role on the character’s identities. The absence and importance of the names in the story make the story rich with detail and identity through something as simple as the name of a character. Names are a significant factor affecting the story and the characters throughout the novel Lost Names.
The two sisters,Premila and Santha in the short story “By Any Other Name” shows on how people in their new school would mistreated them due to their ethnicity. Both Premila and Santha went to a Anglo-Indian day school in Zorinabad where a teacher decided to changed their names to Pamela and Cynthia. Pamela was Premila and Cynthia was Santha ,the teacher decided to change their names because they were too difficult for her to pronounce. The Indian children sat in the back of the classroom and the
An individual's identity is how one perceives and differentiates themselves from others in their society. Outside factors such as family, friends, and society can have a major impact on how one views themselves. However, identity ultimately comes down to one’s own personal beliefs. In Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild, Krakauer investigates the life and death of Chris McCandless, a young man whose actions allow him to pursue a unique identity, but also lead to his untimely demise. In Stephen King’s short story “Survivor Type”, King envisions the affects one’s morals and values can have in grave situations, especially concerning the identity of an individual.
Throughout the course of Brother’s life, he changes from spiteful and ashamed to understanding, demonstrating that he is a dynamic character. Brother’s actions toward his younger sibling Doodle in the heat of anger clearly mark him as a spiteful individual. For example, soon after Doodle learns to crawl, he becomes attached to Brother and insists on following him everywhere. Brother is rather annoyed by this and does his best to prevent Doodle’s interferences with his everyday life: “To discourage his coming with me, I’d run with him across the ends of cotton rows and careen him around corners on two wheels.
Brother is highly driven by love and carries deep connections to the outdoors and nature. Although, he also has difficulty with insecurity issues, guilt, and takes “the walk of shame” once his younger brother Doodle dies and guilt eats him alive. Out of all the stories we have read in class, and all the characters that came with them, Brother is the one that stood out to me and that I connected
“Our brothers and sisters are there with us from the dawn of our personal stories to the inevitable dusk” (Susan Scarf Merrell). Merrell, an American author and a creative writing and literature teacher at Stony Brook Southampton, states that since the early days of your youth to the end of our story our siblings are there throughout our whole journey. Life is similar to a play; parents pass away during the first half; while one’s children come in during the second half; but siblings are there throughout both acts. Tobias Wolff’s, The Rich Brother, portrays the relationship between two brothers that are complete opposites; yet they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else will ever be able. The Rich Brother describes a complex sibling relationship that is fairly common in today’s society; Tobias Wolff makes use of pathos by incorporating real life sibling abuse; and ethos in his own life and credentials.
Identity is also another major theme in The Comedy of Errors and The Brothers Menaechmus. While the plays are obviously about misidentification, even before the actual misidentification occurs do we see discussions on the nature of identity. In this play, it is seen that identity is determined, in part, by one’s relationship with other people. The loss of the family comes a loss of identity because of the importance of familial relationships. With the loss of his wife, Egeon loses his identity as a husband; with the loss of his twin, Antipholus S. loses his identity as a brother. They no longer have these relationship to determine their identities. In fact, the split between Egeon’s past and present states can be seen in the states of his sons,
Suppose we give you pretty English names wouldn’t that be more jolly”(Rau, Pg71). At that moment, Santha saw herself losing her self- belief on her ability to adjust into the school system. She felt that having to choose another name aside from her given name made her inferior and it felt like her real name was meaningless and lacked integrity. Santha didn't last more than a week in the school, because Premila came into her class one day and told her to gather up her things because of they were going home for good, Premila couldn't take the degradation being passed to her.Premila explained to her Mother “She said it was because indians cheat”(Rau,Pg75).The generalizing and dehumanization of the Indian culture through language hurt santha and, her sister so much hereby leaving a bad taste of the school to them. It made them feel like they did not belong there .This supports the Bosmajian theory that name can also be used to dehumanize: and separate human beings. Santha was just a child, but she did not fully understand how Indians was being treated in another society and, she was handed a first hand experience in the school. Santha’s sister acted the exact way Bosmajian wishes more people would act. He wishes for those who will find themselves in such situation to act upon it and not allow it to continue because with time it can turn into a norm.He also wanted individuals that are
Four Brothers depicts a family of four adopted brothers that come to avenge their mother’s death in Detroit in what initially appears to be a random killing in a grocery store robbery. As a backdrop, the four brothers, Bobby, Jeremiah, Jack, and Angel, did not have a family support system, were left to fend for themselves, and were constantly involved in criminal activities. As a result of them not being accepted into any foster care outreach programs, Evelyn Mercer, a lady who had sincere intentions, took all four of them into her own home and adopted them. She became their mother. The brothers suspected their mother’s killing was not a random act and decided to take matters into their own hands. The boys’ investigation of the death reveals more reprehensible activities involving the one brother’s business dealing with a notorious local criminal and the acts of a corrupted cop. The negative social labels that the Mercer brothers experience are passed on from public officials to the citizens of the community. This labeling becomes the nemesis of the Mercer brothers.
Industrialization in America resulted in many successes of the 20th century as we see them today. Without the industrial growth, there wouldn’t be a technology of computer, or an automobile revolution, or a camera tech, or the improved medicine that was developed. Industrial growth was the most important moments in the history of America, changing the American culture as it was known. Agriculture movement was no longer the business of the day, as factories were introduced all around the country, creating more jobs opportunities and useful products. The Industrial growth in America made the job industry what it is today.
Archetypes are found in all tales books, or poems alike, they are a way to make the story more interesting, and the fairy tales written by the Grimm’s brothers implement many archetypes in their stories. An archetype is like an original example of something, like a movie script before it is edited (Bennett). In the tale of “The Two Brothers,” it is about two brothers that grew up with their adopted father who taught them to be huntsmen. The two brothers split paths after journeying out into the world looking for adventures and went about completing quests. The brothers cross paths once again after the brother who is the king was saved by the other brother from an evil witch in a forest, and they go on living
The purpose of this article is to teach and educate people on how legalizing drugs actually makes sense. Before I read the article I had already disagreed with the title, however after reading the article I had a different opinion. I agree with Vanessa Baird. She gave valid points on legalizing and how it could save lives and money all around the world. The purpose of this article is to inform people like me and teach people about the possibilities and open their eyes. She made valid points such as legalization and regulation can break the hold of criminals. I am all for it. I think it will help greatly with the community, less people will be in prison or even dead. There will not be as much drug wars, and people will be much safer knowing
Do you really think that cell phones are distracting? Well just in observation when having a simple conversation with someone sitting next to if they get a text they automatically focus on their phone. Could the distraction have a good motive such as an important meeting, important call from school, a learning tool or even an emergency situation? Well yes that could be argued, but just in our everyday life we seem to focus more on our phones than our surroundings. According to The United Nations of Communication and Technology Task Force (2005), “Cell phones are not just communications devices sparking new modalities of interacting between people, they are also particularly useful computers that fit in your pockets, are always with you, and
The metaphor of the mountain means that all parts of life age and grow old. The cutting down of trees symbolize getting bald. The metaphor also means that you can retain your knowledge and wisdom when you get older. The mountain can still retain its beauty even though the trees were cut down.
