The main character Tom Sawyer seemed like the most irresponsible kid in the town of St. Petersburg. Tom had gotten into trouble and his punishment was to whitewash the fence. Even though Tom gets into a lot of trouble he is very smart! He finds a way of getting out of the work, for example Jim came a long and Tom started to make small talk with him. Tom said that he would go fetch the bucket of water if he would whitewash while he was gone. Tom being the smart young boy that he is responded just give me the bucket she will never know. Finally Jim stopped with the arguing and gave Tom the bucket. Tom would rather find a way out of doing his own work which was his punishment! There is no maturity in that. Example of Tom showing maturity is when he sacrificed himself for Becky Thatcher. Even though he is lying to the school master, he would rather take the blame and get into trouble then having her get punished. When Tom jumps up to claim that he was the one who ripped the schoolbook, taking Becky’s punishment, he surprises everyone- even himself! He likes Becky so much that he would take the blame for her. It shows maturity for sticking up for someone but it also is a bad thing because he’s lying. Lying is not the mature thing to do. …show more content…
He wants Becky to hold the end of the string while they find awhile out of the cave. He wants her to hold the string because that way he won’t lose her, and also Becky in my opinion will be a lot calmer just knowing that she’s safe, Becky was ready giving up hope that they couldn’t find a way out of the cave. But Tom did the right thing to keep her calm and to keep having her hold on to the string. He kept a calm smooth voice when he talked to her. He’s taking responsibility for her life and
Tom Sawyer was an adventurous little boy who was always looking for attention. Throughout the chapters that we read I could understand that Tom had an enormous imagination and that he would do basically anything to receive some attention in return. Tom acted the way that he did so that he could receive some of the attention that he was missing with being an orphan.
It crushed Tom’s high spirits when he learned that sadly, Jim was captured and chained. He was furious that they would not set Jim free and that he should rightfully be free.
The book features this mischief exclusive to boyhood. Tom’s mischief includes what any other boy would have done, but there are also instances where he takes advantage of human tendency. For example, when Tom is set by Aunt Polly to whitewash, he comes up with an interesting way to manipulate others into doing it for him by making the work not seem like work at all. Soon he is getting paid to sit back and watch people do it for him, all because he discovers that, “…to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain.” (Twain 21)
Tom Sawyer is a book about a boy who has some crazy adventures. Tom also gets into almost of trouble through his adventures. Throughout the book tom changes and becomes a better person. This is how he changes and becomes a better person.
Tom could’ve left and continued on while never messing with him but just because Jim is a slave he feels obligated to do so. Southerners hated blacks and were very cruel to them. We get a full image of Southerners when this is said, "The pitifulest thing out is a mob.... Now the thing for you to do, is to droop your tails and go home and crawl in a hole. If any real lynching's going to be done, it will be done in the dark, southern fashion; and when they come, they'll bring their masks, and fetch a man along" (Twain).
“Most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred; one or two were experiences of my own, the rest those boys who were schoolmates of mine. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom Sawyer also, but not from individual-he is a combination of the characteristics of three boys whom I knew, and therefore belongs to the composite order of architecture,” (Twain xvii). The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, takes place while a time of the 1800s, in a village near the Mississippi River. Tom Sawyer and his friends encounters many adventures throughout his boyhood. Tom’s decision making develops while his many adventures. He only think of himself when whitewashing, but later he puts others before himself and gets himself and Becky out of a bad situation, he caused.
Telling the truth demonstrates maturity because you’re ‘fessing up to your mistakes and not getting caught up in a never ending spiral of lying and guilt. Tom does this in multiple occasions. First, When Tom gets back from pirating, he tells Aunt Polly about extremely accurate dream he “had”. Aunt Polly finds out it was not a dream and really him listening to them mourn him under the bed. Tom tells the truth as lying would only make the situation worse. But that’s not the only time Tom’s told the truth. Tom witnesses a murder that the town believed was Muff Potter as he was framed. Tom, sorta quick to act HAD to tell Muffs lawyer about what really happened which saved Muff from being punished and possibly lynched / hanged. Not stopping there,
Tom's plan is cruel because he want to play the escape prisoner game and he makes Jim think he is wanted.
Tom is an incredibly muscular man. Nick described him as having enormous packs of muscle shifting underneath his clothes as he moved his cruel body that was capable of massive amounts of leverage. Daisy describes Tom as “a brute of a man, a great big hulking physical specimen” (15).Tom is a very powerfully built man and uses this frame as he conducts himself around others. With his massive body, Tom can be overpowering and will often impose his will on others. When Nick first arrived at Tom’s mansion, Tom turned him around by one arm and physically shifted his view multiple times (10). Tom used his body to impose his will on Nick. To run parallel with his astounding stature, Tom’s personality begins to develop as the dinner scene takes place. On multiple occasions throughout the night, Tom would interrupt the current conversation between Daisy and Nick, and he would begin his own. As Tom continued to impose his thoughts and concerns on the others, he brings up his belief which he had read about that it is up to them, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things (16). Tom shows his side of racism and furthermore establishes his lack of consideration for others. From the first time the reader meets Tom, his character makes a bold, arrogant, and overpowering reaction that will continue to form throughout the story.
“Maturity is that time when the mirrors in our mind turn to windows and instead of seeing the reflection of ourselves we see others” (Anonymous). Maturity is being aware of and acting appropriately toward others in one’s surroundings. His or her maturity depends less on the person's actual age and more on life experience and personal integrity. In Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the character of Tom transforms from a self-centered child to a more thoughtful, mature young man.
To pursue how his death happened and who did it would create the loss of yet another innocent person. Bob, basically responsible for Tom's death.... the death of an innocent man. Now Bob is
Tom matured when he was in the cave with Becky. He knew he had to provide for her and save both their lives. He took matters into his own hands and took the kite line and found a way out. Another was he matured was when Becky was scared she was going to get whipped for ripping the schoolmasters “anatomy book”. Tom stepped in and took the blame and got a second whipping,
Throughout the novel Tom is shown as someone very arrogant and abrupt in the way he talks to people and feels he has the authority to question others in an interrogatory manner. In his first meeting with Nick he
First, Tom has changed throughout the book. At the beginning of the book Tom was always telling some sort of lie. He lied about whitewashing the fence, his toe hurting, memorizing bible verses, taking the pills and much more. Towards the end of the book Tom is starting to realize he needs to be truthful. On the day of the murder trial Tom is asked to take the stand. He was as scared as a mouse getting chased by a cat. After a few minutes of talking and thinking Tom confesses the truth about the murder. Injun Joe was the one who killed Dr. Robinson! Another example of how Tom changed in the book is his kindness. After Tom brought up his old crush Amy, Becky was as mad as your mom when you don't clean your room. Tom tried to get her back but she didn't care. After awhile he didn't really care what she did. When Tom and Becky were stuck in the cave he confronted her and told her they would get out. He also took the blame for the ripped
