English 101 and English 102 were both classes that greatly contributed to my writing abilities, and changed certain aspects of my approach to the writing process. The courses’ exposed my weaknesses as a student, and motivated me to persevere through academic obstacles and failures. English 101 and 102, also helped me improve the areas of writing that I was already proficient in, essentially giving me a desire to strive for academic excellence. Both of the classes contributed to my writing skills in their own unique ways, and helped establish more background in my essays. English 101 helped me in very specific components of my writing. A primary issue that English 101 helped me fix, was the insufficient amount of background and analysis in my essays. I fixed this problem in my writing by individually thinking about the main ideas in each sentence, and providing further information about them. This added to the credibility of my arguments, as I thoroughly conveyed my main points to the reader. English 101 improved my grammar as I progressed throughout the semester with experience, and helped me fortify the structure of my papers. …show more content…
Many of the ideas I received for my essays, was the result of pondering different topics and ideas with a few members of the class. The class helped me “think outside the box” and examine every aspect of my topics. The English 102 room was a place where I could openly reflect my opinions with other people, and seek help whenever I felt stuck in the middle of a paper. Parts of my essays that appeared to have holes or weaknesses in their arguments, were often corrected by the feedback of other students who discussed how it could be reworded to thoroughly convey my point to the reader. English 102 class helped me establish valid arguments in my essays, and prompted me to take advantage of opportunities to revise my
Writing is a skill that improves over time with experience and exposure to different concepts. English 111 provided me with new skills and information that allowed me to enhance my writing abilities. As a student, I was given the opportunity to explore and develop my own writing process. This course explained, in depth, the components of a college level paper and correct grammar rules. By creating and following my own writing process, understanding the correct flow/components of a paper, and improving my grammar skills my writing improved tremendously. Through taking the course, English 111, I was able to develop as a writer and improve my writing abilities.
Over the course of the English 1101 course I have learned how I am as a writer including my struggles and strong suits. The four papers written each brought new difficulties and learning experiences. I had a difficult time in this class because I’ve always been a technical writer that pays little attention to sensory details and strong verbs. The narrative, compare and contrast, process analysis, and position papers taught me skills and shows me what I need to work on to become a better writer.
Many students question themselves of what they might learn from taking an English class. If they will understand the material or if what they learn in class will be used later in their lives. Gaining something out of a class is what matters the most or why else would a student take that class in the first place. Through my observations and experiences if someone were to ask me what I learned in English 101, I would say that I have improved as a student overall. Taking English 101 has helped me to become a more specialized writer, a more studious student, and a person who is more minded person.
This year in our English 1010 class, we covered many different genres and types of writing. We covered how to write personal narratives, how to respond to other students and other forms of writing, and how to professionally write essays. Briefly, we touched down on how to write argumentatively and were also required to create an infographic, wish was probably my favorite assignment. Although I never thought of myself as a strong writer, I believe that this class has greatly improved not only my writing skills, but my thinking skills as well. This was my first English class to be taken through dual enrollment and I believe that it went quite successfully while challenging me as a writer.
Throughout the English 101 course, I believe I have thoroughly improved in my writing, peer editing, and analyzing readings, along with annotating my thoughts, misunderstandings, and difficulties. I believe I have especially improved on my thesis statements, providing the basis for my essays. My thesis statements have went from being plain and uninteresting to being more detailed, clear, and concise. This enabled me to produced better written essays that are rich in detail, rhetorical statements, evidence, and experiences. I feel as if I came into this course not exactly sure how to write a college paper. I was always more focused on the length of my essays rather than the structure, vocabulary, and ideas my papers were exhibiting. My writing now flows better and presents my ideas in a clear, organized fashion.
English 101 might seem like an easy course to take for some students. For other students such as myself, English 101 was one of the classes I feared and procrastinated on taking. Coming from an ESL background, English was the class I have always struggled with the most. I’ve always excelled in science/ mathematics courses. I prefer the correct answers to be facts and universal. Creativity is not my forte. The process of putting my thoughts down on paper in an organized manner, with correct punctuation, and citing works used, seemed like a complicated, tedious task before taking English 101 this summer.
In English 102 I would consider it to be the best writing experience of my life. There would be times where I would say that it was the most struggling class I ever had with my grammar and word choices. I would always have to prove my self to Professor Hohmann who is are an English professor at CAC (Central Arizona College) That I can write professionally as a student. I would have six assignments in the English course to prove myself that I can write as good as a college student. The tasks that were given to me for grades were beneficial for other classes and in life. One of the assignments where the research paper for the topic that I liked of which that there needed to be two sides. Another task that helped me out with my writing was the
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
Many of my writing traits have changed since I have been in English 101. While being in English this semester my writing has continued to improve greatly. This was mostly due to what I have changed since high school. One thing that I have changed is the way I plot out my essays. The way I was going about it before did not work for me because of the format that my previous teachers required. Now, after being in college, I can freely set up my essays in a way that I am comfortable with and can understand if I need to look back at them later. Another thing that has specifically changed about my writing is the word choice I decide to use. Now in English 101 I use an array of new words that had not been in my vocabulary in high school. I find myself using more sophisticated words when writing my sentences as opposed to what I was doing previously.
Over the past year I had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to develop successful paper. Taking English 1010 was a great experience because it prepares students on becoming better writers through college life. Even though this is my second year in college I was unable to take English 1010 the first year, but taking this class truly show me what college professors are looking for when we are ask to write a successful paper. College professors expect every student to be able to evaluate each topic and be descriptive in their essay.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
English 101 has helped shape my writing in so many ways. I have grown and became more confident in the skills I portray. In-class workshops helped me to receive feedback and new ideas from my peers. My view of English has changed drastically for the best. Along with my writing skills my reading and critical thinking skills have also improved. I learned the importance of using ethos, pathos, and logos. Putting text in dialog has been a struggle for me in the past but I now have a better grasp on it after taking English 101. I’m happy I had to take English 101 because it has helped prepare for not only English 102 but my other classes as well.
Throughout this semester in English 101, I have made a significant improvement on multiple things, including how to be an exceptional writer and thinker. English has always been one of my most favored subjects to study because to me it instructs students how to be intelligent, how to become a more creative and critical thinker, and be able to develop ethical values and imagination. You can express yourself more efficiently in English than you can in any other subject. This class has truly made me a more confident writer and helped me express myself in different ways through the different types of papers I wrote. By writing different types of papers I have improved multiple areas of my writing. I have grown as a student in diverse areas such
English 101 was a challenging course. A constant stream of reading and writing lead to a demanding yet rewarding semester. The variety of texts read and written about provided a plethora of life lessons and demonstrations of values. Now at the end of the course I find myself a better student and writer. The texts themselves were not influential to my growth as a critical reader or college student. Rather, it was my own analysis of the texts that allowed me to consider other perspectives on technology use in the classroom and the importance of revision when it comes to school work.
The English 101 Composition course has impacted me in a positive way. The essays I have written in this class have helped me expand my perspectives and reevaluate my own personal beliefs. For example, the essay “Praising the Golden
