How Far Do You Agree That Socialist Realism Was Stalin’s Most Important Method of Social Control?

Stalin had several methods of social control that gave him such a powerful rule in Russia that even today he still has supporters. Socialist Realism was an essential method to create this, although it was not the most important method of social control. Socialist Realism was the second most important method of social control as it was very effective, but not as effective as the Terror. Social Realism allowed Stalin to be portrayed in a positive light but it was also an attempt to use art forms to sell government economic and social policy to the Russian people. This caused Stalin to gain a lot of support due to the sense of fear in the population, which also made them fear Stalin himself. This gave Stalin a greater power in Russia as anyone who was reluctant to follow him before had no choice but to obey him. Show trials were a crucial part of the Terror as they made many people fear the consequences of going against Stalin. In show trials, the aim was not to establish innocence or guilt as the guilt of the non-Communists on trial were assumed guilty from the start. This would show the Communists as the only trustworthy party. However, in 1936, Communists were on trial such as Zinoviev and Kamenev. They were charged with the ‘mysterious’ murder of Kirov, a considered threat to Stalin. Although they pleaded their innocence in jail, they were ‘persuaded’ to confess. This portrayed Stalin as the only trustworthy member of the Communists and so, he should be leader. Moreover, the Terror was Stalin’s most important method of social control as it forced people to follow him or face extreme consequences. The cult of personality was one of Stalin’s most important methods of social control. This method gave the impression that Stalin wanted to help people and improve the living standards in Russia, and most importantly made him seem like a great leader. This
