Games are socially constructed entities and often have a certain set of conventional rules. The world is home to billions of people said people make up a society. Societies are broken down in larger social groupings but share similar attributes like geographical location, culture, and economics. From these, groups can be broken down even further to subcultures such as LGBT, deaf, and emo. Individuals absorb knowledge from living in a society that builds a general view of constructivism in a social setting. Taking part in social grouping expands their cognitive development of a person this knowledge becomes the building blocks of the behaviors in which an individual acts upons. Throughout this paper, I will explain how gender roles ( the way a person acts based on their sex), cultural representations (views based on race) and social practices (such as dating and marriage) serve as guidance to the development of an individual’s behaviors but do not define a persons identity. Early in history and still today a societal norm is this idea of dating; a human mating process where two engage socially for companionship beyond the level of friends. Overtime, dating has slightly changed but the main idea still remain the same - each individual is assessing the other’s attributes in order to determine if they are suitable as a partner in an intimate relationship which in hopes would form into a marriage. In many shops, there seems to be an obvious separation between boys and girls items, for example, the birthday cards, books, clothes, and toys. This is shown in a variety of ways the boy's items are mainly the color blue and the books have pictures of either action figures, superheroes or tools. Whereas the girl's items are mainly the color pink. The books show pictures of fairies, princess, and Bratz. The cards also have the theme of the color pink for girls and blue for boys. The girl's cards have a lot of sparkles and pretty pictures whereas the boy's cards are covered in camo kind of illustrations and also have action figures on the covers. The children's clothes are separated into sections where there are labels for the boy's clothes and labels for the girl's clothes. The girl's clothing is all pretty and pink, it is covered in sparkles. Whereas boys clothing has camo patterns, blue colors, and pictures of action figures.
Literature throughout history has displayed to us the evolution of the male and female gender roles in society. Women have been described as ‘the angel in the house,’ whilst men are typified as dominant and prevailing in comparison to women. The gothic genre in literature is used to personify and exaggerate these stereotypes, by using gothic motifs such as dream sequences and themes such as horror and terror. Not only does the gothic exaggerate the stereotypes, but it also allows them to be contravened, due to the transgressive nature of the genre. The psychoanalytical aspect of this genre, allows for repressed desires to be made eminent and therefore characters can transgress and in the process, cross their contemporary gender boundaries. Keats uses the gothic device of Negative capability in order to conceal the transgression of the females in his poetry, Carter revised gothic fairytales in order to display them from a feminist approach and Stoker uses gothic themes, set against the backdrop of the fluidity of Fin de siècle period, to allow characters to stray from their gender stereotypes.

A great percentage of people in today's society would agree with the consensus that manhood is and should be based on masculine features and ambitions in order to be accepted as a manly male; Paul Theroux begs to differ in his formal essay, “Being a Man”, as he contests this norm by avidly stating that forcefully adopting manly attributes while growing up is “emotionally damaging and socially harmful” (Theroux). I have realized that culture has played a significant role in creating a perception for myself and my family. At the University of Oregon, the campus has strived to be equal for students of all genders for many years. It has been successful in many of its attempts to make the environment safe and equal for all of its students, but there still are locations on campus that are not as equal as many people would like to believe them to be. The current Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, has contributed to many controversial news topics throughout his career. Most recently occurring was the scandal involving himself, a waitress at his local café, and his choice to pull her ponytail. He claims the incident was just “horsing around” (Davison, 2015), however many have called his actions into question after the waitress complained. Labeled as inappropriate behaviour for a man in his position, the waitress explained how powerless and uncomfortable it made her feel. The abuse of power and lack of respect displayed by Key shows his ignorance surrounding gender roles and feminism. Imagine not being able to attend school as a child. Imagine how much of an impact that would have on the rest of a human life. Everyday in the region of the Middle East, women are prohibited in some areas from attending school. Without basic knowledge, they cannot obtain jobs and their health conditions are lowered. Even if education is offered, it does not have a positive impact because it is of little quality. Despite the deeply rooted gender roles in the Middle East, women should be offered the same education as men.
The idea of “boy clothes” and “girl clothes” is something heavily engrained in our culture. We often attribute certain clothing items or styles to be specifically for a girl or for a boy. Feminine dresses and skirts for girls and pants and suits for boys. Why is it that clothes hold so much meaning to them?
