The 1920s to Now: Changes in Music. Almost everyone listens to music. Music is extremely different now than it was back in the 1920s. The artists individuals listen to today have changed since the 1920s. Not only has who people listen to changed, but also the type of music. Furthermore, the influences of how music is created are different now than in the 1920s. Popular artists, types of music, and the influences have changed from the 1920s to now. The 1920s had popular singers. For example, Bessie Smith was the most widespread female artist. Not only was she the most popular female artist, but she was also the first black woman to start her music career. During this time, Bessie Smith was only 24 years old! Bessie Smith was one of the most popular artists of the 1920s. Similar to the 1920s, there are popular singers today too! For example, Taylor Swift is one of the world’s most prominent artists. As previously spoken about, Taylor is the Bessie Smith of the 2020s! Taylor was born on December 13, 1989 (Ray). Swift started her music career at a young age, similar to Smith. Ray stated that “A development deal with RCA Records allowed Swift to make the acquaintance of recording-industry veterans, and in 2004, at age 14, she signed with Sony/ATV as a songwriter” (Ray). Furthermore, she was only 11 years old when she sang “The Star Spangled Banner” (Ray). Years later, Swift made her way to the top charts on Spotify. With all this, she became one of the world’s most popular artists. Other than popular singers, new types of music were formed during the 1920s. One example of a new form of music is jazz. Just like in the 1920s, there are popular types of music today. One example is acoustic tracks. For instance, “Electronic music is huge, and it gets its claws everywhere — even Taylor Swift, who made her name as a country-pop star, made the jump to squelchy electronic pop long ago” (“Music Trends 2024”). Acoustic music has grown in popularity over time and has made its way onto the top charts. Another example of music people favor is pop. The majority of music lovers have started to listen to pop for its catchy beats. For instance, “It continues to dominate the charts, radio airwaves, and streaming platforms, captivating a global audience” (The Most Popular). Pop is currently one of the most popular types of music. The music listened to today is different from that of the 1920s. Different factors influenced music in the 1920s. First, African Americans influenced music during the 1920s. For instance, “In fact, blues music was heavily influenced by the African spirituals sung by those who were enslaved” (Tennant).
