Are Immigrants Welcomed?

Joyce Boahen Professor Smith US HISTORY 102 17th October 2017 America’s a nation of immigrants, a land of opportunity and refuge for the world’s poor. Immigrants and their descendants make up the majority of Americans. Immigrants often migrate for new opportunities such as freedom and education for their offsprings. In the late 19th and 20th century, immigrants occupied the United States with more than 30 million from all around the world such as France, Germany, Ireland, Russia, Scandinavia and Italy. Due to the increase in transportation technology, migration enhanced with individuals migrating because of economic, religious and political reasons.The horrible potato famine in Ireland drove millions of Irish from their homes. Political unrest caused many Germans to seek refuge in America while Jews escaped anti-Semitism and Italians escaped earthquakes and poverty. America’s working class later consisted of African , Asian, Hispanic and Western, Eastern and Southern europeans. Meanwhile,due to immigrants being unskilled, they received low paying jobs.Even though there were many benefits that contributed to the increase in immigration, it is essential to argue that the laws and
