A role model is someone who affects one by their examples, making these people wanting to adapt to the role model's lifestyle. The 1930s was a time of racial segregation and the Great Depression. Harper Lee, who at the time was a 34 year old white woman, decided to express her thoughts on the subject of racial discrimination through her award winning book To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a good role model because he defends Tom Robinson, he wants the best for his children, and he is truthful. Atticus took the Tom Robinson case and gave it all he got to prove Tom was innocent. Atticus was not going to take this case and leave Tom with no support; in essence, giving Tom a death sentence like most lawyers would. “‘[You] know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.’ ‘Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him.’”(163) Atticus believed it was a sin to kill a mockingbird because they never do anything wrong. Robinson never did anything to harm Mayella Ewell so Atticus knew he should not be sentenced and chose to do everything he could to defend Robinson. Some people say that Atticus never …show more content…
“The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.”(76) While this is true, if Atticus did not take
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird we learn that Atticus is defending a black man named Tom Robinson in court. Tom Later reveals during the trial that he helped Mayella Ewell, the girl that is accusing him for raping and beating her, with a couple of household chores and states that he "felt sorry for her" (Lee 264) because "she seemed to try more'n the rest of 'em" (Lee 264) This showing of empathy from Tom Robinson brought his ultimate downfall when he was convicted by a full jury of whites even though she was made a liar when she was questioned by Atticus. The jury stubbornly believed that her word was better than Tom's because she was
There are multiple reasons Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson. One of the reasons is because he feels empathy for Tom Robinson. He fells empathy for Tom because he is being accused of a crime he didn't commit. Atticus wants Tom Robinson's name to cleared since he is innocent. Atticus also knows that Tom Robinson
Atticus' argument for Tom Robinson was perfectly executed, and it was blatantly obvious that Tom was innocent. Even if the jury (pre) decided Tom Robinson as guilty, the partiality and discrimination were evident in the trial. The text state, "Atticus Finch won’t win, he can’t win, but he’s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that. And I thought to myself, well, we’re making a step—it’s just a baby- step, but it’s a step.”" Like Miss Maudie said, Atticus' eloquence and strong arguments created a ripple in the stone-hard racism in County. In conclusion, I gather that Atticus did the correct thing by defending Tom Robinson. His actions allowed him to successfully raise his children morally and possibly change the outcome of Maycomb's future, even if it caused
In the book To kill kill a mockingbird he is criticized on some of his actions and has had to deal with some dreadful things. I will share those terrible thrills in today’s essay. Now we will begin to unravel the reason or reason’s he has gained his respects. Atticus is willing to do what is necessary for the situations at hand.
Atticus Finch shows that he is a great role model for his care for others throughout the book To Kill A Mockingbird. One example
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to have in the near future and those who interest us in a way that make us want to be a better person. They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.
Atticus did not want to defend Tom Robinson he was forced by the judge because the judge knew that Atticus would thrive to win the case, and he wouldn’t judge him by his race and gender. So during the trial when the jury went to come up with a decision it took a long time to for them to come up with a decision. While they were waiting Atticus said, “ come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of god do your duty, believe him”(Lee 205-206). Atticus is saying in this quote to come to a decision and let Tom Robinson be reunited with his
Throughout the first chapter of, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is developed into a role model, a trustworthy person, and a loyal man. Atticus first shows how loyal he is when, “During his first five years in Maycomb, Atticus practiced economy more than anything;for several years thereafter he invested his earnings in his brother's education.” (Lee 5) This shows that he is very loyal because, he practiced a career for a long time, made not a lot of money, then he pays for his brothers own education. As Lee develops Atticus, he becomes more of a role model and a trustworthy person.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee it makes sense for Atticus to take Tom Robinson's case even though Atticus knows he won't win. Atticus feels like he can put up a fight and make a the case go on. He also believes Tom Robinson, and Atticus doesn’t think he raped Mayella.
Atticus learned, however, that Mayella could have easily been beaten by her father and used Tom as a cover. If you were in his position, you would've stood up for Tom Robinson as well, correct? The left handed punch. The contradictory witness statements. The lack of doctors at the crime scene. All of these statements add up to prove one fact: Tom Robinson was innocent. He would surely go to jail, however, only because of the color of his skin. Anyone would feel poorly for the man, and would try to help him. Because of this, our family had to stand up for what we believed in: proving the innocence of
The reason why this case in particular effects Atticus so strongly is because it goes completely against the base ideals of the town and it's people. Atticus, believing that every single person, regardless of race, deserves fair trial, goes against the mindset of Maycomb citizens, resulting in a deep moral crisis in Atticus' thoughts between what is right and what is socially right. To actually strive towards a fair trial for Tom Robinson, Atticus had to fully understand the implications of what he was doing. This simple act of kindness and justice would bring hate and scorn down on his family name and his children. He was terrified that his moral compass, though pointing true, was leading him off the beaten path, and this is truly why Atticus
Why does Atticus feel a need to defend Tom Robinson and how well will he defend him?
Atticus is a colleague of mine at the school where I work. I know that he would be a spectacular teacher at your school due to his fatherly image, his respect for his peers and the respect that he receives from others. His commitment to equality between blacks and whites make him a valuable contribution to the school community. These character traits create an excellent teacher in the classroom. Knowing Atticus for a long time has benefitted me with knowing his true personality and the events, which Harper Lee wrote about in To Kill A Mockingbird, that affected him (gerund).
Atticus is one of the major characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, and he appears in almost every chapter. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout and appears in every chapter. While some might think Atticus is not a proper role model, he is a good role model because he treats everybody with respect, he sees other races as equal, and he fights for equality.
When Atticus took the case, he went up against Maycomb, a generally prejudiced town, in order to defend Tom. He understood that taking the case would make him an object of ridicule and that no one would forgive him for believing a black man's word over a white man's. Even his own sister expresses disapproval at his decision, practically telling him he was bringing disgrace to the family. Nevertheless, no matter how much his reputation suffered, he did not change his mind. Standing up for his morals and ethics was more important than what people thought about him. From the very start Atticus knows he will not win the case however he does his job and finishes what he set out to do.
