How Is Betrayal Shown In Othello

Many times, we have felt betrayed by our loved ones, professional colleagues, acquaintances. Betrayal means a violation of trust or faith by a person one is counting on. It has dire consequences for both the betrayer and the betrayed. In Shakespeare’s Othello, this theme is evident throughout the play. Othello put his trust in Iago who manipulates him over and over again. However, the latter’s actions were only motivated by not being promoted to the position of lieutenant, and instead, another man is given this opportunity even though he is inexperienced “Forsooth, a great arithmetician, One Michael Cassio, a Florentine that never set a squadron in the field” (Shakespeare 704). Nevertheless, Iago’s betrayal is evident because as Othello’s ensign he should have remained loyal to his commander even though he was passed up for a promotion he felt qualified for. I feel like this theme is also evident in my life. My biological father was abusive to my mother in addition to extending the same treatment to my brothers and I. It resulted in my mother eventually having to leave him when I was around two years old. He has never been a part of my life since. I feel that this is a form of betrayal. A father’s role is to look after their family and ensure that their wellbeing is not compromised. However, my biological father betrayed us as he was the main person that exposed our family to adverse treatment. My brothers and I should never have had to grow up watching our mother be emotionally and physically abused nor receiving the same
