Many times, we have felt betrayed by our loved ones, professional colleagues, acquaintances. Betrayal means a violation of trust or faith by a person one is counting on. It has dire consequences for both the betrayer and the betrayed. In Shakespeare’s Othello, this theme is evident throughout the play. Othello put his trust in Iago who manipulates him over and over again. However, the latter’s actions were only motivated by not being promoted to the position of lieutenant, and instead, another man is given this opportunity even though he is inexperienced “Forsooth, a great arithmetician, One Michael Cassio, a Florentine that never set a squadron in the field” (Shakespeare 704). Nevertheless, Iago’s betrayal is evident because as Othello’s ensign he should have remained loyal to his commander even though he was passed up for a promotion he felt qualified for. I feel like this theme is also evident in my life. My biological father was abusive to my mother in addition to extending the same treatment to my brothers and I. It resulted in my mother eventually having to leave him when I was around two years old. He has never been a part of my life since. I feel that this is a form of betrayal. A father’s role is to look after their family and ensure that their wellbeing is not compromised. However, my biological father betrayed us as he was the main person that exposed our family to adverse treatment. My brothers and I should never have had to grow up watching our mother be emotionally and physically abused nor receiving the same
Like many of the plays written by William Shakespeare, betrayal is what drives the story of Othello. Betrayal, being the main theme in Othello, is revealed through the actions and behavior of the characters. The main character centered around the theme of betrayal is Iago. Iago’s jealousy is what drives the deception of the other characters.
By the end of the Great war, many British citizens have come to view propaganda as a part of everyday life. Its presence representing a sort of solution to the struggles of the war itself, while also doubling as its greatest threat as well. Propaganda was so effective and popular during the war simply because it had the ability to manipulate the thoughts and behavior of the masses, like an invisible hand. As the British government caught on to this trend they knew that a solid propaganda agency would be needed to help gain an edge over their enemies, the desire to influence the British and the Americans to support the British war effort was an important endeavor to pursue, as it could mean the difference between winning the war or losing it.
Like her husband, Lady Macbeth's guilt is symbolized by blood. Initially, Lady Macbeth’s guilt is not as evident as Macbeth's guilt. After Macbeth kills Duncan, Lady Macbeth simply says, “Go get some water / And wash this filthy witness from your hand” (2.2.44-45). She is quite nonchalant about the whole ordeal - as her husband wrestles with his guilt, she simply brushes it off.
Thesis: Betrayal is a common factor in many pieces of literature including Shakespeare's Othello, William Blake's A Poison Tree, and Jane Austen's Persuasion.
Throughout Othello, the dramatic irony of “Honest” Iago is detrimental. Iago serves as Othello’s main attendant and is expected to get the promotion to lieutenant. In Othello, Shakespeare builds up to the overall meaning of the play through the use of betrayal which results in Iago ruining everyone’s life as well as his own. The Lies, Betrayal and Self-Destruction in Othello In the play Othello composed by Williams Shakespeare, the main character has been misled by another into a world of self-destruction (Bevington, D., 2014). Betrayal a punitive word yet it still exists in the heart and mind of man. Betrayal disparaged the word, ‘trust’. Shakespeare’s Othello is a play consistently based on jealously and the way it can destroy lives. One is quick to think this jealously is based on Othello’s lack of belief in Desdemona’s faithfulness to him or his suspensions over Desdemona’s affair with Cassio, Othello’s honorable lieutenant. Upon closer inspection of the jealously that exists throughout the play it becomes clear that his jealously is not the sole start and reason for all of the destruction that occurs. Iago, a good friend of Othello, is not who he appears to be. Iago’s own jealously of those around him pushes him over the edge. He begins to deceive all those who believe he is a true, honorable, and faithful man. Throughout Othello, Iago incites his own jealously in
