In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Calpurnia has the personality trait of sassiness, cheeky and rude. When Jem asked Calpurnia to wrap up the town pet's foot she replied in a sassy manner. ¨I can't rap up any dog's foot now… do it yourself.¨, (Lee, Pg. 122). When you tell someone to do something themselves it is usually in a sassy manner. Then as Jem was telling Calpurnia about the dog she thought he was lying and gave him a lot of sass. ¨Are you telling me a story...I don't see any dog.¨, (Lee, Pg. 123). If people question you telling the truth they say it in a sassy, cheeky and rude tone. Next Calpurnia was being sassy by doing things her way and sassing off to people about how she is going to warn the Radley´s. ¨ Jem… said
This tone fits with her attitude that she’s had throughout the book. One example is, “When you are absolutely certain that what you’ve done on a homework or test is fine – thank you very much – be aware that this feeling may be based on…” (228). This interruption and sassy tone associated with it provides the reader a bit of reassurance that Oakley is aware of what they are thinking and that she can relate to things that the reader has experienced before. Along with the fact that Oakley is still learning along with the reader, she also can say she has been in their shoes and is willing to help them through the struggles of
(Rinaldi 91). Not only does she say ill-mannered things, she acts disrespectful too! “Jem lied. A practice she’s been known to indulge in to get her own way.” (Rinaldi 5).
She used her natural tone to appease to her audience, a lot of which has a similar personality to her. I believe that Lancaster knew her target audience would be men and women in a similar position to her, cynical and unemployed. Or, those men and women shared a similar sense of humor and personality. “’Yes, Bethany,’ I replied, ‘because every romantic fairy tale ends with Prince Charming woofing up blue nacho chips on the princess’ floral shower curtain from Target.’” (page 80, chapter 3) Lancaster made it so every other sentence that came out of her mouth was either sarcastic or sassy. She knew her audience was going to be mainly composed of women and men who had similar personality traits as her, and would appreciate her use of sarcasm and wit to get her points across. Additionally, Lancaster used her sarcasm and sass to add an element of humor to her
‘I mean, it’s boring and all. Definitely dumb.’ Now I have spent a great deal of time in the years since wondering why Sheila Mant should come down so hard on fishing” (Wetherell 3). This was one of the first moments in which the boy began to realize that Sheila Mant was not such a perfectly kind person, but more so the opposite—a rude person. The third example of how Sheila is characterized as rude is how she indirectly stated that she did not want to go to the concert by canoe.
”Longs you keep on makin’ fun o'me”. This also shows how low her class is, people make fun of her also mock her. Many quotes from the story show how low her class is. Then,
The Change in Female Roles “In the late 1955, a quiet, courageous woman named Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man on a crowded Montgomery city bus... In Montgomery, segregated city buses were a constant reminder of inequality”(Birmingham Civil Rights Institute). In the 1930’s, women were bound by strict expectations from society and treated as inferior by men, thankfully today, women are respected for their differences and valued for their independence. Calpurnia is a mother-like figure in Scout and Jem’s lives, and she is the role model who teaches Scout that being a woman can be a positive thing.
‘but you ain’t called on to contradict ‘em at the table when they don’t’ . . . ‘Don’t matter who they are, anybody who sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty!’” (33). Although Cal might come off as harsh in this section, it is understandable, as Scout had just been extremely rude. Just like a mother, Cal has to keep Scout in
I don’t know why my son is so standoffish- that’s not Southern behavior!” (6.63. Amanda). This is a prime example of how Amanda seems to become awkward when it comes to being in the presence of others.
Samuel Ullman once said “Maturity is the ability to think, speak and act your feelings within the bounds of dignity. The measure of your maturity is how spiritual you become during the midst of your frustrations” (Ullman). Harper Lee shows maturity multiple times. In her novel to kill a mocking bird Harper Lee portrays growing up through her younger characters realizing that hurting and discriminating human beings is wrong. It often takes time to realize things, but when you do realize it the way you think and what you stand up for can change.
These words indicate not only a vituperative nature, but arrogance and obstinacy. She believes white people are better than black people. She refuses to consider anything positive about people she finds reprehensible; she is steadfast on her opinions about people and would rather not get to know them. She is also quite domineering and officious; she often meddles with Atticus’ fatherly role:
In Britt’s essay, “Neat People vs. Sloppy People”, Suzanne Britt criticizes neat people in a humorous way for certain behaviors. Britt creates a humorous tone and a good impression for sloppy people. This excerpt appears in a book “Show and Tell” Britt writes “It is her journey into the awful cave of self” (214). At first, I was offended by Britt’s essay, but after I realized Britt was using humor, I was able to look at my sister and her sloppiness differently.
Evidence: An example that demonstrates Scout being immature is when she gets into a fight on her first day of school, “ Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop. Let him go, Scout. Why?. He didn’t have any lunch” (30).
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a first person narrative describing the life of Jem and Scout, a brother and sister who are the main protagonists of the novel. Jem and Scout grow up in a town where they are constantly surrounded by racial inequality, social unrest and prejudice. Jem Finch is considered a normal young boy growing up in the small Alabama town of Maycomb. Like his friends Jem likes to likes take part in activities that are perceived to be masculine in nature such as sports. Yet the way he is raised is very different than his friends and his upbringing is considered to be against the cultural norm of the time. Harper Lee creates the character of Jem to show the reader
Scout’s personality begins as coarse; she wants to control with her fists and is easily provoked. However, through her interactions with those in her community, her personality becomes more refined. One example of her lack of self-control is shown when she gets into a fight with her cousin Francis. In her rage, she decided to take out her anger on him, “‘He is not!’ I roared. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking’ about, but you better cut it out this red hot minute!’I leaped off the steps and
