The concept of whether censorship is more harmful or helpful has been a common cause of controversy for years. What exactly is censorship? Censorship is the elimination or prohibition of any part of a book, film, news article, etc. that is considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. Although it can be considered as harmful, sensitive, and sometimes irrelevant, censorship is generally more helpful in the world, as its main goal is to protect the world. Censorship is essential to the world today because it can protect a nation and its citizens, protect children, and help parents monitor their children.
Every country or nation can censor what they want their citizens to see. This form of censorship is used to protect a nation’s citizens from severely distressing events. As Pillai explains, “During an emergency like a terrorist attack, it helps in controlling panic and rumors throughout the nation”. For example, “This was observed in India in 2008 when terrorists attacked The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai” (Pillai). For this reason, censorship is vital for controlling anxiety and tension throughout a traumatic experience; without it, people would likely be horrified. Although this event and events like it are extremely upsetting, the censoring of it can make it seem not as horrendous.
An additional reason that censorship is essential to our society is that it protects children. The minds of children are

A nation’s secrets and citizen are kept safe through censorship. Furthermore, censorship is implemented to keep children’s growing minds safe and keep them from the darkness that can be encountered on the Internet. All things considered, censorship may seem dictatorial, but it is only imposed for the world’s greater good. Perhaps if mankind weren’t so prone to error, then maybe there wouldn’t even be the
Censorship has been adopted in many societies as well as the governments of our world. As the history of the world expands we see many countries try to censor what their citizens see. When the countries do this they are not assisting the country, they are leading it into a self-destruction. A good example of this would be America in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. This nation is destroyed in a futuristic war that only lasts a couple of minutes, if not seconds. Other fitting examples include the Nazi regime and the Soviet Union, both governments censoring their population in what they could read, write, and see. As we know both of these governments did not succeed and ultimately were obliterated and the countries were punished. Government censorship not only wounds the ability for people to grow and expand in their thought process, but it eventually causes the ultimate self-destruction of the nation.
Censorship is altering or blocking certain material from media, internet, and books. With the emergence of different communication technologies, this has been all-pervasive. This is most seen in television programs. There are different disputes as to whether it more harmful than beneficial .Many proponents think that the use of it will establish a balance in what is shown in T.V shows, while opponents are criticizing on the foundation of threats and violations that it poses to people’s right to speech.
Censorship is the act of filtering what an audience of something hears and sees. This is an effective method for mothers to protect their children from being exposed to things they do not fully understand, however it can be harmful once it is put into the hands of the government, because it crosses some moral and ethical lines. It violates the people’s right to freedom of expression. It would also make it much simpler to hide information from the people or to give them false information in the form of propaganda. Therefore, censorship is both positive and negative and its power should be left in the hands of parents rather than the government.
“Research on the Censorship of ‘Brave New World”” Although being a subject of controversy for many decades, the novel Brave New World has survived the test of time and is even considered a classic. With that in mind, this novel is still continued to be challenged as it ranked number 7 in ALA’s “Frequently Challenged Books for the 21st Century” for 2011 (“Frequently Challenged Books for the 21st Century”). This list is composed of books that people don’t believe are suitable for the public to view. Another name for this, when the books are actually banned, is called censorship. However, should people actually be able to infringe on other people’s right to read books based on their narrow moral or religious views?
Freedom of expression is a right given to fuel people’s imaginative minds that are occupied with different thoughts and opinions. Censorship is only an obstacle, preventing people from expressing their inner beliefs by replacing it with fake ones. Censorship actively prohibits and suppresses people’s opinions to speak up in society freely and openly. It restricts the common adult or child of any gender from being themselves and fighting for what they believe in. Censoring speech and expression only establish greater problems than the one attempting to be resolved that both prevent people from expressing themselves and cover the ears of those who are willing to listen.
While many believe censorship to be a necessity in certain contexts, the idea of censorship is at fault in its attempt to control and stop the advance knowledge of the world today. There is fear of
A multitude of countries and organizations use censorship for various reasons. However something they all have in common is the one providing the censored material does not want the reader or viewer to know something, whether that be the true state of a country or the real history of a matter. Censorship is a constant tug-a-war between two sides for the truth over a subject. This form of restriction can be observed from the early 1900’s to today’s modern times, and can also be seen worldwide in countries that have little to nothing in common.
Modern society faces many controversial issues that previous generations could not have possibly imagined. These issues seem to evolve with the culture and recur in new form as each generation moves on in time. For example, censorship is an issue that generations have struggled to resolve since the dawn of media and the publication of documents. Today, censorship is an important part of our world because of its ability to let parents block out or allow certain material to reach their children, its controversial stand on the freedom of press and freedom of speech rights of human beings, and its demonstration of who or what has the power at hand to control what enters the public media.
Children’s innocence must be protected by censorship. The debate on whether censorship is beneficial to society often compiles to a few main reasons. Subjects like freedom of speech, women’s rights, and children’s innocence is brought into question when discussing censorship. It is an important debate because what is censored influences societal beliefs of what is right and wrong. It decides what truths are revealed publicly. Some people think censorship is beneficial because it supposedly protects children, but it is actually useless because it underestimates children’s tolerance, witholds information, oversexualizes women, and sugarcoats the truth.
Children are easily influenced and are risked to being exposed to nudity, violence and coarse language. Without censorship children would be exposed to things such as the ones listed above. In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, it talks about how mass censorship affects the world. In the book Fahrenheit 451 censorship affected the world in a bad way such as taking citizens freedom to think for themselves away. In the book Fahrenheit 451 it is shown how censorship is bad but censorship can also affect the world in a positive way. In order to obtain order in America, citizens need censorship. Censorship guards children´s minds, protects citizen´s from doing harm to individuals and keeps proper morals intact.
Censorship may be protection from inappropriate materials, but it also limits free speech. For the limitation of free speech, it is reasonable why people are emphatically against censorship. It is understood that there is a need to filter some of the materials released in today’s society, but too much is being done by people who have no right meddling with everyone’s rights. Civilization has always been plagued by a never ending battle being fought over what is deemed right and wrong. In today’s culture, censorship oppresses everything in the media. From movies and music to television and even news stories, most of the content viewed today has been filtered one way or another. Restrictions have been in place since early societies have been
“Censorship is the control of what people may say, hear, write, read, see, or do.” All around the word censorship comes in various forms, the four major types of censorship consist of moral, military, political, and religious censorship. At whatever point an administration or private group feels jeopardized by free expression, it may swing to restriction to secure their fundamental beliefs. Every civilization, including equitable ones, has had some sort of restriction when its rulers have felt it would profit the country or themselves. The type of censorship mostly found in undemocratic countries would be political censorship. “Political Censorship is used by governments that fear the free expression of criticism and opposing ideas.”
If it is uncomfortable to read and discuss, so be it. Most things that matter deeply are.” -USA Today. Today Censorship also affects more than the children though. It really affects everyone equally. It allows the government to have too much control over what we learn and know. What if we lived in a dystopian society. For example, if you’ve ever seen the movie or read the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, the city kept everyone from learning about the world’s past and why they have to obey their rules and only their rules and do whatever job they assign them. Private groups and public authorities in various parts of the country are working to remove or limit access to reading materials, to censor content in schools, to label controversial views. Most people believe that free communication is essential to the preservation of a free society and a creative culture. Another touchy topic about they types of censorship we have is open religion. We have the Freedom of Religion. But many schools don’t allow religious practices, teachings, or even how they dress. What’s wrong with anyone expressing their religion and how they think of God peacefully and freely? America is
The idea of censorship can be found all over in the world’s history. Around 400 BC, Socrates, a famous rhetor, received a death sentence. There was no crime committed. The only thing Socrates did was try to educate people. He simply offended the wrong person morally and politically by his teachings. His sentence was to drink poison. Censorship is used in many places all over the world in places such as Rome, China, and Greece (Newth). Censorship is the act of supervising, blocking, and deleting material that can be considered harmful (Merriam-Webster). It leads people to see the act as a violation of the First Amendment as well as a negative word. In today’s society, censorship is used in schools, public libraries, and many other places.
Censorship is very important in relation to a nation, “It restrains vulgarity and obscenity” (Pillai). It helps the nation against any danger. First, it protects military information that could be used for evil, then, it can also help on controlling panic and rumors throughout a nation, “A similar case was observed in India in 2008 when terrorists attacked The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai” (Pillai). Finally, censorship preserves the secrets of the entire nation, secrets that could put nations in danger (Pillai). Censorship can lead to a peaceful society by protecting our secrets from those who want to harm us.
