You’re sitting there and watching your favorite film: Cinderella. You think she is very determined and so compassionate. But her stepsisters ruin her dress and her fairy godmother comes and gives her this stunning carriage and ball gown and you wish you could be as beautiful as she is. Disney princesses are good role models, they are very impactful to young children, sometimes they sacrifice themselves, and you can learn plenty of values from them. Sarah Coyne, an associate professor in family life at Brigham Young University, made a research experiment on if Disney princesses impact children. As well as when the films were viewed, they didn’t seem to harm girls’ body image during the 1 year tracked by researchers. Girls had, according to Coyne (2016), “a very positive body image at the beginning and the end.” Now, although Disney princesses do have negative effects on girls when they are young, they do have their good points. The Disney princesses do have great traits that girls want. Cinderella teaches girls, for example, to have according to Angela Gilberto (2016), “courage and to be kind!”” (para. 3). She teaches girls in her film to be determined and never give up. Her evil step mother locked her away to do chores and to never do what she wanted and so, when Cinderella got the news that the King's son was to find a wife, she got hopeful and found one of her mothers to redo. This dress was beyond beautiful and her stepsisters destroyed the dress right before the ball. So, Cinderella runs away and her fairy godmother changes her whole night. In my opinion, teaching children about racism and sexism AS A WHOLE, is better than teaching them with Disney princesses. I say this because there could be a girl in the class or even boy that believes that girls only cook, clean, and be a damsel in distress. But, according to Robyn Muir (2016), “It’s teaching how gender is represented through a popular media outlet and how that can affect the way women and men are represented in society,” as well as, “can teach children to have respect for others and how to value and promote a diverse society.” But of course, when teaching that, you do have to pay attention to how you word things and make sure to get the right message across and not the wrong one. Yes, the movie had very stereotypical characters: 7 men who work all day and come home to a cooked meal, a domesticated princess, a prince who comes and saves her from her sleeping curse, and of course an evil stepmother. Yes, she dreams of love as any girl would, but it doesn’t mean she minds housework. Another example would be Belle, from the Beauty and the Beast. Fairy Tales have been around for hundreds of years, but up until recently have never been profited on as they are in today’s modern world. It is impossible to hide from anything Mr. Walt Disney has created, and that is exactly the company’s intentions. One huge area Disney has been excelling is in “Princess Culture” most specifically the focus on pretty pink dresses. For example, in Peggy Orenstein’s article “What’s Wrong with Cinderella?” the author addresses the many different consequences of Disney’s lucrative marketing strategy. Young girls that are inspired to have this "Disney princess effect" are not growing up to be strong, independent women that are motivated to change something in the world. In many of the Disney princess movies for example, The 1991 film, Beauty and the Beast, shows how women are not supposed to be intelligent, but should focus on fulfilling a man's needs. This has an impact on how a girl views her female position in the world.
In today’s society it is hard to find shows or movies that have positive values for boys and girls. There is a lot of controversy surrounding Disney princesses. Many believe that they negatively impact girls and their view on the world. They believe that young girls are learning negative values from the Disney princesses. On the other hand, many people believe that the Disney princesses have many positive morals and values to teach young girls. Disney teaches young girls value of hard work. It also teaches girls how they should treat people, even in difficult situations. One of the greatest things that Disney princesses teach, is find out who you are and shoot for the stars and accomplish your dreams.
Did anyone realize that all of the Disney princesses have a waistline that is smaller than the span of their eyes? Throughout all generations, Disney princesses have acted as major role models in young girl's lives. However, are these female characters negatively influencing how these young girls reflect on themselves? Ideals taught at young ages, often continue with them as they grow into adulthood. Therefore, Disney should replace passive princesses with strong and realistic female roles.

Also, Disney films’ portrayal of the stereotypical body image negatively impacts young girls’ perception on their figure. This leads to them believing that the ideal woman is skinny-perfect, as shown by the Disney female characters; thus, their thinking becomes “[…] thin is the only acceptable type of beauty.” (Body Image n.p.). In another study, it said on how young girls wanted to change their skin color preferably lighter in order to become a princess (Mckinstry n.p.). There were also young girls who wanted to become a princess by dressing femininely. Disney have made a collaboration with Happy Skin to come p with a new lip collection in order for people to use and look like a Disney princess (Afinidad-Bernardo n.p.). Young children, specifically young girls in this case, are extremely susceptible to being influenced by the portrayal of these gendered stereotypes. Girls growing up in today’s society are being stripped of their childhoods. With fictional figures to dream of being, young girls aren’t falling in love with the beauty of the stories but more so they assume that they don’t look good enough to be like the world adored princesses. The author wrote this article in response to the epidemic of young girls growing up too fast and the concern it leaves. Between the Finucane Theory, the “Hottie Mystique” and the media onslaught will all reveal the beginning to a much bigger problem that these Disney princesses are creating. The author contends that young girls are losing sight of their childhoods and are becoming sexually advanced too soon.
In our modern society parents want to know who the best role models are for their children; especially parents of young girls. Disney Princesses are known to be depending on their Prince Charming for happiness. As years pass by, Princesses today are more independent and don’t need a Prince Charming in their lives. This idea affects children who feel inspired by these Fairy Tales.
