How Is Invictus Historically Accurate

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” (Nelson Mandela quotes) I recently watched the movie Invictus. After watching the movie, reading the book and doing research on true events, time period and people I will prove that the film, Invictus, was not historically accurate by discussing the true historical people and events, summarizing the movie, and comparing and contrasting how the movie portrayed the true people and events. Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 and was named Rolihlahala which means “troublemaker.” He wasn’t given the name Nelson until he was seven years old and in school. Such as when the team goes to visit the prison cell in South Africa. This is the actual cell where Nelson Mandela spent the majority of his prison years. (Trivia) Also, in the beginning of the movie when Mandela invited Francois to tea, that actually happened. They had met in 1994, Mandela had just been elected president and Francois had just became captain of the Springboks team. (Francois Pienaar) They just sat and chat for a full hour. Laughing and interrupting each other. This is just a couple of the many things that were historically accurate. These two are both very important scenes in the movie. Such as when Mandela gave the poem Invictus to Francois. This did not actually happen. Instead Mandela gave him a copy of the “The Man in the Arena” passage from the president of the United States (Mandela). In the movie when the plane flew over the field before the big game, it was not supposed to happen. Both Mandela and the security guards were shocked at the sight because it was not approved. Turns out this was just made up. The plane did get permission to fly over the field and all the the security guards knew that it was going to happen. These are just a few of the things that were changed for the making of this movie. Although it was a very good movie, it is not completely historically accurate. I personally really liked this movie. Mainly because it tells a very interesting story and really catches your attention and keeps it through the entire film. I do not think that this movie was completely historically accurate. There was many moments where you would notice that things were not how they were supposed to be. Then when I researched I found many more that I had not noticed in the movie.
