In William Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth”, he displaces two characters that are both guilty. Lady Macbeth is guilty of planning the murder of Duncan. Macbeth is guilty of actually committing Duncan’s murder. The guilt ultimately gets to both of them. Lady Macbeth becomes so guilty she commits suicide and Macbeth begins killing just to kill. Who would you classify as more guilty? Lady Macbeth who was the planner or Macbeth for actually committing the murder.
Lady Macbeth is on trial today for being an accessory to murder. She is accused of planning the murder of King Duncan. Her scheme was to get the two guards very drunk so they would pass out and not remember anything that happened that night; Macbeth would then go into the room and stab Duncan
I deem Macbeth to be guiltier than Lady Macbeth. Firstly, Macbeth has intense loyalty and respect towards King Duncan, and despite of the negative influence the witches and Lady Macbeth have become for him, he should have been very resistant and totally oppose the idea of assassinating of King Duncan, considering the fact that he was the strong and loyal warrior who King Duncan respected very much. Factually, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan in order to inherit the Scottish Throne. Lady Macbeth says, “O, never / Shall sun that morrow see! / look like the innocent flower, / But be the serpent under’t” (1.5. 66-72). In addition, Macbeth is irresolute to this idea because of his loyalty and respect towards King Duncan makes
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a tragedy in which the plot evolves in great accordance to the guilt that the individual characters feel. The guilt starts with the planning and execution of the murder of King Duncan. To this event Lady Macbeth and Macbeth react in different ways. They both become guilty in some way or another but the guilt they feel is comprised of different reasons. It is due to their differences in character that they react in the ways they do. While it might not seem like both of them become guilty after this event, when explored their actions show clearly the guilt they feel.
Michael Taylor Mrs. Northernor British Literature 4 December 2016 Guilt and Conscience of Macbeth Dirty consciences and guilt played a huge role in the play "Macbeth". Many people did many things that put things on their mind. William Shakespeare is the author of this amazing play. I believe in the beginning of the play the characters had a sense of humanity and felt guilty for things they had done but throughout the play they dropped that sense and found that they felt no remorse for their dirty deeds.
Lady Macbeth is mostly responsible for the plotting and murder that Macbeth commits. Lady Macbeth believes the only way husband can become King is if he kills Duncan, she forces Macbeth to kill Duncan in many different ways, and when it goes too far she doesn’t do anything to stop Macbeth. How could it be that Lady Macbeth is the leader in this? Could it just be because she wants her husband to be happy?
The Shakespearean tragedy known as Macbeth features a couple who together commit a crime spiraling both the state of their minds and their kingdom out of control. The question that must be answered is this: who is guiltier of the two? Macbeth is guiltier by trial because he commits the murder(s), continues to shed blood to protect himself, hired murderers to do his unnecessary dirty work, and is constantly paranoid that he will lose the throne. Lady Macbeth, despite being the ring leader in the beginning plot to kill Duncan, is in no way, shape, or form guiltier than Macbeth.
Shakespeare's "Macbeth" holds many hidden themes within its already exuberant plot. The first of these surrounds the murder of Duncan and the role that both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth himself played. However, the true guilt of the murder can fall on either character. Although Macbeth physically committed the crime, it was Lady Macbeth that pushed him to his limits of rational thought and essentially made fun of him to lower his esteem. With Macbeth's defenses down, it was an easy task for Lady Macbeth to influence Duncan's murder and make up an excuse as to why she could not do it herself. The guilt of Duncan's murder can be placed firmly on the head on Lady Macbeth.
Even though Macbeth and Lady Macbeth committed numerous crimes, there is one of them who is ‘more’ guiltier. When seen from the legal perspective, Macbeth is guiltier because he committed the crime of murder. Macbeth kills Duncan because of the demands of power. When he realizes that he is abound to be found, he killed more people or created situations that translated to the death of others such as the guards and family members of other leaders. Lady Macbeth can be seen as morally guilty through her actions and acts. For example, he communicated to Macbeth about what the witches said and ‘persuaded’ Macbeth towards killing Duncan. For example, Lady Macbeth raised issues around his manliness and the Lady developed a narrative that implied if
Throughout Act 1, Macbeth vacillates between having an alarming desire to kill King Duncan and seize the throne to experiencing feelings of remorse for wanting to betray the generous king. However, Lady Macbeth’s adamant words cause him to ignore his guilt. This chosen quotation from scene 7 of Act 1 portrays Macbeth’s decision to fully comply with Lady Macbeth along with a final shift in his thoughts. The first part of the quote, “Bring forth men-children only, For thy undaunted mettle should compose nothing but males” displays Macbeth’s admiration at his wife’s dauntless character by saying that she should only give birth to male children.
Macbeth is innocent Your Honour, what is your view on free will? What is your view on a mentally scarred war hero who was destined to be betrayed by his country and his people? Macbeth your Honour, is not guilty for the crimes of regicide, 4 accounts of murder and numerous attempted murders, he was simply a drift in the linear stream of destiny, governed by god. He is like all of us here today, actors with defined roles on the stage of life. The Prosecution may proclaim that the tyrant Macbeth was deserving of his betrayal by his country, he did defy the natural order, he killed King Duncan.
In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth commits a crime with the help of his wife that was so unforgiveable and sinister. The sin eventually ate away in guilt for Macbeth that he started to see things, hear things, and thought there were eyes on him at all times. He thought he had to start being extra careful with each step he takes. Macbeth started feeling that there was always someone out there to get him for his sins, be it a goul or a human soul. Macbeth is so paranoid that he is awake late at night and walking around in the castle.
Lady Macbeth uses Macbeth’s love for her to kill Duncan, so she can get the crown. By making someone else do the killing Lady Macbeth feels
She begins to explain to Macbeth what her plan is, “When Duncan is asleep-- whereto the rather shall his day’s hard journey soundly invite him-- his two chamberlains will I with wine and wassail to convince that memory, the warder of the brain, shall be a fume and the receipt of reason A limbeck only: when in swinish sleep their drenched natures lie as in a death, what cannot you and I perform upon the unguarded Duncan?” (Act I sc. vii lines 61-66). Her master plan is to kill Duncan while he is asleep by sneaking into his castle and getting the guards drunk. Since she came up with the plan to kill Duncan, it shows that she is the one at fault. If Lady Macbeth had never compelled her husband to go along with her plan, he would never have thought about murdering King Duncan and things could have gone in favor for Macbeth instead of how they actually played out. More proof that she was to blame for the death of Duncan was when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were preparing to kill him. Lady Macbeth said, “The doors are open, and the surfeited grooms do mock their charge with snores. I have drugged their possets, that death and nature do contend about them, whether they live or die” (Act II sc. ii lines 6-10). Lady Macbeth had just told Macbeth that she had poisoned the wine and that the guards were fast asleep. Even though Lady Macbeth
However, towards the end of the play, especially in Act 5, Lady Macbeth becomes conscience-stricken due to guilt and contrition that haunts her. Due to this guilt, it shows that she isn't as audacious as she was in the beginning and her mind also suffers from this guilt. She imagines that she has blood on her hands that cannot be removed and says to herself “Out, damned spot! Out, I say!—One, two. Why, then, ’tis time to do ’t.” (5.1.163).Lady Macbeth is so consumed with remorse that she descends into lunacy causing her to imagine things that aren't present such as the blood on her hands. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth denotes being conscience-stricken when she mutters the bad deeds she has done in the past. When she does this, she comes to a realization
In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth begins as a bloodthirsty woman, transforms into a heartless, brutal man, and then ultimately uncovers her true self, a juxtaposition of everything she portrays to the outside world, a vulnerable and guilty woman. As Lady Macbeth sets her sights towards her ambition of becoming Queen, she yearns to become more like a man. She wants to be stripped of her nurturing and motherly qualities and hopes to become: ruthless, strong, aggressive, and strong-willed. She believes that in order to be able to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan, and to carry out the plan, she must be stripped of any emotion or kindness, which she hopes will be replaced with an empty-heart and thick
In the Tragedy of Macbeth, Shakespeare depicted the fall of a valiant general, who usurped the Scottish throne and eventually destroyed by his ever inflating ambition. During the course of regicide, his wife Lady Macbeth act as a powerful stimulant, who coaxed and pushed Macbeth to kill the beloved king Duncan. However,we can see from the play that though Lady Macbeth had a pivotal role to play in this evil deed, she did not bear chief responsibility of the murder. She was an intimidating and evil character from the beginning, while as situation developed, his husband became a much
