How Is Odysseus A Hero

Merriam-Webster defines a hero as, “A person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” For Odysseus to be a hero this definition is supposed to fit and describe him and his character, but why does this definition not describe or fit him and his character? This is because Odysseus is not a hero. Odysseus has done unethical things on his journey that makes him a person that should go unadmired. For example, when Odysseus ignored the death of his man in order to make more progress on his journey since he claims a task was pressing and waited for the Cyclops in order to be offered more gifts (his men die as a result), these examples prove he is a person who does unethical things. Odysseus is not a hero because he is disloyal, selfish, and greedy.

In The Odyssey, the Greek hero Odysseus must make it back to his home in Ithaca after the battle of Troy. Along his journey, he encounters obstacles that require the upmost perseverance and willpower to survive. Some of these obstacles include a giant cyclops who wants to eat him, lotus-eating peoples that drug his crew, violent storms that

Ten years after the fall of Troy, Odysseus a great hero has yet to return to his home in Ithaca. It begins with Athena and Poseidon who helped the Greeks during the Trojan War. Athena turned against the Greeks and convinces Poseidon to do the same. The Greeks are hit by storms on the way home and many ships are destroyed and the fleet is scattered. The war and his distress at sea keep Odysseus away from Ithaca for twenty years.

In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus endures an arduous voyage filled with countless dangers. Although he is praised by comrades and countrymen as a wise, heroic king, Odysseus does not actually live up to his name as he begins this trip back to Ithaka. Through his journey though, Odysseus corrects his reckless, undisciplined, and arrogant actions, learning responsibility, restraint, and humility in the process.

As a final point, being brave, strong, and making a quick decisions was many kinds of being a hero and that’s what Odysseus had that make him a hero. Odysseus with his men going through a lot of challenges but in the end he is the only one survived and alive. With this in mind, the epic poem showed us how big the difference between the people 3,000 years ago and people in this generation. The author shows in the epic poem how whimsical the world 3,000 years ago and how powerful the gods in their maturity.

Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.

Odysseus is the main character in an epic poem called the Odyssey. In the poem Odysseus has had some bad luck getting home, with some of the gods helping him and some hindering him; his journey towards home is a constant struggle. In this poem we see a man being broke and rebuilt, through constant irony his faith was damaged and without the help of Athena he probably would have given up on his journey. Through his hard work and wise spirit he finally does achieve his goal.

What is a hero? Are they strong, are they compassionate? Hero’s have been around for centuries, and if you want to be considered a hero, you some really superb people to look up to. So what do all these people have in common; Strength, intelligence, but most of all selflessness. However, many people still argue that Odysseus is a hero.

But was Odysseus really a hero? Throughout the epic we are given many examples of his heroism, while we are also foretold of times he's acted in the manner less than acceptable for hero. In this paper, I will discuss how Odysseus’s character developed in the epic through his intellect, emotions, and his strength, and determine if the development through the story has caused him to lose himself as hero or become a true hero instead. However, he does have a tendency of getting the gods and goddesses on their bad side.

Drastic trials have drastic outcomes on those who persevere through them. One of the greatest trials in Homer’s Odyssey involves a hero, Odysseus, and his journey home. He is taken to the limit of his skill and expertise facing trials that immensely surpass his mortal imagination. Journeying home, Odysseus faces monsters, the god’s rage, and his own pride and his true identity was forged through these trials; he came back to his land as a transformed person who has a new identity.

Odysseus returned to Ithaca after twenty years of struggle and fighting the monsters, he travelled through the foreign lands and served all the hardships during his journey. No wonder he is regarded as the literature’s most famous veteran, “But now brilliant Odysseus awoke from sleep in his own fatherland, and he did not know it/having been long away.” He have been away from his homeland for a very long time fighting and killing people and moreover the goddess of Athena has changed the
