In Shakespeare’s Othello, many can see that Othello is the epitome of a tragic hero. Although he went through a great transformation throughout the story, Othello did not have any bad intentions. Othello is just a person like everyone else who was struck with jealousy, lies, and mishaps. Iago had a strong motivation to tear down Othello, which ultimately lead to Othello’s demise. Many people believe that the name of Shakespeare’s play should be changed to Iago due to his major parts in the play the caused great commotion. Although Iago stirred the plot in many directions, the name of Shakespeare’s play, Othello, should remain the same. Othello should remain Othello because without Othello in this play there would be no motive; Othello is also …show more content…
Without a motive in the play, there is no interest for the audience. In the play Othello, the character Othello plays creates great purpose for Iago, another primary character, to stir up the plot and cause turmoil throughout all the characters in the play. Iago is a very devious character who is very jealous of Othello. In the beginning of the play, Othello is a very noble and respected character. Iago is his right hand man who he trusts, even going as far as calling him, “Honest Iago.” Othello is a person that is respected, has many victories, and a pleasantly good life. Iago has hatred towards Othello, because Othello gave the lieutenant position that was supposed to be given to Iago, to Michael Cassio, and on top of that, he thinks that Othello slept with his wife. Throughout the play, you start to see that maybe Iago is unhappy with his own personal life, and wants to make others feel the same way. Othello just happened to be Iago’s target and reasoning behind everything he did. It is understandable that people can say that without Iago, there would be no tragedy, or plot to the story. The same can go for Othello as well, even a bit further in saying that without Othello, there would be no tragedy, motive behind Iago, or even a downfall that would create the same ending as it
Mental images are created by the brain from memories, imagination, or a combination of both. Writers use imagery to help create mental images for the reader. Imagery is when words are used to appeal to your five senses, sight, taste, smell, touch, and sound. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird many types of imagery are used. Examples of imagery being used in the book is when the Radley place is being described, Scout’s teacher Miss. Caroline is being described, and when Miss. Caroline’s shriek was described.
Iago is one of the most misunderstood villains in Shakespeare literature. We side with Othello from the start because his name is on the cover of our paperback, we read Othello when learning about heroes, so we expect Iago to be a villain, a ruthless manipulator. We don’t know why, he doesn’t state it plainly or in simple English, so we assume that he’s evil, that he’s just a disgruntled sociopath out to exact his exaggerated revenge on good and noble Othello. Iago’s misunderstood reputation is a result of not truly examining his character, and answering the “why” factor behind his actions. After all, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. His goal in the play was not just to destroy Othello for the fun of it. His objective,
In William Shakespeare’s Othello, the heinous villain Iago plots against the main character, Othello, for the entirety of the play. Iago displays many character traits that are associated with malicious and evil people. Three of these are selfishness, vengefulness, and dishonesty. Each of these traits is hidden from the characters in the play, but they are revealed to the reader which shows readers the true villainous character of Iago. When Iago plots against Othello and other characters throughout the book, all of these traits are easily seen by the reader.
Unlike a pathetic character, a tragic hero is a noble character who displays some goodness but his misjudgements lead to his downfall. His death while tragic, allows viewers to sympathize him while experiencing catharsis. In William Shakespeare’s Othello, Shakespeare described Othello as a high rank character, and has been deceived by Iago, to make him suspect his loyal wife, Desdemona, of infidelity. Othello is a sympathetic character because he is someone of high rank who possesses some goodness, his hamartia of insecurity is exploited by Iago, but he is able to face his wrongdoing with dignity.
Othello may be seen as a tragic hero throughout William Shakespeare’s famous play, Othello. From the get go Iago masters manipulating Othello, he continues to do so until he suffers his major downfall. Iago is not remorseful for it at all. In fact, he’s doing it for revenge of the
The tragic plot of Othello hinges on the potential of the villain, Iago, to deceive other characters, above all Roderigo and Othello, through encouraging them to misinterpret what they see. Othello is prone to Iago 's ploys seeing that he himself is so sincere and
As the villain in Shakespeare's play Othello, Iago has two main actions. They are to plot and to deceive. Iago wishes to plot and to deceive because he is jealous of Othello and hates him. Iago's reasons for why he hates Othello is because he believes that Othello made love to his wife, and Iago is mad that Cassio was chosen to be Lieutenant instead of himself. From this hate comes the main conflict of the play.
In this story Othello is seen as a good man who never has been lied to until Iago; as a gracious and tough general who falls only because of the cunningness and evilness of Iago. Some may say, because Othello was possessed by evil that he is counted as a tragic hero when he dies. But since the fact that he had been faithful and honest to his wife and lieutenant he would have figured out the truth of the whole dilemma. Therefore, Othello
In the play Othello, written by Shakespeare, Iago it the antagonist of the story. His goal is to see Othello, the protagonist, suffer because Othello did not give Iago the job position he wanted. Iago begins to play with Othello mind by putting in lies stating that his wife, Desdemona, is cheating on him with Cassio, the guys to took Iago's job position and eventually Othello kills himself and Desdemona. The character Othello is a tragic hero because he
In William Shakespeare’s play Othello, the Iago is the most important character. It is his dreams, hopes and desires that turn him evil, bringing out the worst possible characteristics in order to achieve all the things he wants. Iago’s manipulative traits, deceitful actions and love for Othello eventually cause the death Emilia, Desdemona and Othello himself.
In the myth Arachne as retold by Olivia Coolidge, a young girl challenges a goddess and faces the consequences. In ancient Greece a girl by the name of Arachne is a talented weaver and spinner talent, she was overly proud of her work. Soon after, people started watching Arachne weave and they were beginning to admire her work. Then, Arachne begins to trash talk the gods and goddesses. Athena disguises herself as a old crown and then, starts to talk to Arachne.
Tragedy is an intrinsically human concept; tragic heroes are damned by what they themselves do. Othello is not so much felled by the actions of Iago, but by a quality all people possess-- human frailty. Accordingly, Othello is not a victim of consequences, but an active participant in his downfall. He is not merely a vehicle for the machinations of Iago; he had free agency. Othello's deficiencies are: an insecure grasp of Venetian social values; lack of critical intelligence, self-knowledge, and faith in his wife; and finally, insecurity-- these are the qualities that lead to his own downfall.
After much thought, and in light of some recent laws being passed in California (SB 277 & SB 792); I would like to propose the following Constitutional Amendment:
Though the name of the play written by William Shakespeare is called "Othello," the character Othello is not the main character, but rather Iago is. Iago is the character who drives the play, he is the one who makes things happen. Without his greed and hated, there would be no play at all. The whole play is centered around Iago's revenge and in doing so, he is willing to make other people's lives miserable. Through "Othello," Iago uses the other characters to avenge the wrong doings which Othello has inflicted upon him, and will go to any means to do so.
Othello is a tragic hero because of his greatnesses and his weaknesses. He is a noble man who possesses all the qualities of a military leader, which he is. He has control over himself and shows courage as well as dignity. Just as Othello is a virtuous man there are some flaws within him, these flaws complete him ff as a tragic hero. Othello is often blinded by trust and can not see a person for who they really are. He trusts the people around him even when they mean to afflict harm upon him. Through this, it can be seen why Othello is one of the most tragic hero out of all the characters from Shakespeare’s many plays.
