How Is Othello A Tragic Hero

In Shakespeare’s Othello, many can see that Othello is the epitome of a tragic hero. Although he went through a great transformation throughout the story, Othello did not have any bad intentions. Othello is just a person like everyone else who was struck with jealousy, lies, and mishaps. Iago had a strong motivation to tear down Othello, which ultimately lead to Othello’s demise. Many people believe that the name of Shakespeare’s play should be changed to Iago due to his major parts in the play the caused great commotion. Although Iago stirred the plot in many directions, the name of Shakespeare’s play, Othello, should remain the same. Without a motive in the play, there is no interest for the audience. In the play Othello, the character Othello plays creates great purpose for Iago, another primary character, to stir up the plot and cause turmoil throughout all the characters in the play. Iago is a very devious character who is very jealous of Othello. In the beginning of the play, Othello is a very noble and respected character. Iago is his right hand man who he trusts, even going as far as calling him, “Honest Iago.” Othello is a person that is respected, has many victories, and a pleasantly good life. Iago has hatred towards Othello, because Othello gave the lieutenant position that was supposed to be given to Iago, to Michael Cassio, and on top of that, he thinks that Othello slept with his wife. Throughout the play, you start to see that maybe Iago is unhappy with his own personal life, and wants to make others feel the same way. Othello just happened to be Iago’s target and reasoning behind everything he did. It is understandable that people can say that without Iago, there would be no tragedy, or plot to the story. The same can go for Othello as well, even a bit further in saying that without Othello, there would be no tragedy, motive behind Iago, or even a downfall that would create the same ending as it
