1). Phil’s scenario is similar to Sisyphus’ because they are both stuck in a situation where they have to repeat doing the same thing over and over. For example, Phil keeps reliving Groundhog Day while Sisyphus has to roll a rock up a hill for eternity. Another example of how Phil’s and Sisyphus’ scenarios are similar is how they got themselves into repeating the same day over. Phil was rude to people and did not enjoy the little aspects of life during his stay and news casting in Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day. Unlike Phil, Sisyphus created many crimes that the gods did not appreciate. Phil’s scenario is different from Sisyphus’ because Phil got to change the way he wanted to act and the things he wanted to do. For example, after he realized that he was going to keep reliving Groundhog’s Day, he decided to take advantage of the situation. On one of the days Phil decided to drive foolishly around town with two drunks that he met at a bar and ends up in jail. Since he is reliving the same day many times, he decides to steal money from the money truck. Sisyphus however just gets stuck with continuously rolling the rock up the hill and he has to deal with his “hour of consciousness”. …show more content…
Throughout the movie Phil takes advantage of reliving the same day but then realizes there is not much more he can do, so he tries to kill himself in multiple ways. But near the end we see a change in Phil, he is much kinder to people. He starts to embrace what is happening to him, instead of thinking of himself all the time he starts to do service for others in the community. We can see that he struggles with the consequence he is faced with but in the end we see that Phil changes his attitude in the way he sees life. He gets the girl, he gets the happiness he was looking for, and he breaks the cycle. Existentialism is demonstrated in the movie when we can visually see that Phil can change his view towards life so he could live a better
Both Krakauer and Odysseus face guilt on their journeys. In some instances, both men experience guilt and cope with their guilt in similar ways, but in other ways, each man responds differently.
In the movie “Groundhog Day,” the main character Phil faces the nightmare of waking up on the same day at the same time. In the beginning, this causes Groundhog Day to have the same events over and over again. However, after living each day the same way, Phil decides to change the events of the day in both good and bad ways. Through these changes he finally learns how to achieve his biggest goal: winning over Rita.
Both display several heroic qualities that are clearly apparent, including courage, perseverance, and cunning intelligence
As different as Odysseus and jack may seem, they are surprisingly similar in multiple aspects. Jack, for example, is very arrogant at the beginning of the book, showing off to his friends saying things like “I can hit high c!” Odysseus in the same way was bragging to the Cyclops that he had blinded, shouting out whom he truly was and nearly getting himself and all of his men killed. Another aspect of similarity is their persistence. Jack will torch and comb through every bit of that island just to find and kill ralph, and Odysseus will hold on to an olive tree branch for hours just to wait for his raft to come back from the pits of Charybdis. Third, the two are both good leaders. Not to say that what they were doing was right, but jack could convince and encourage his band of boys to follow him and do whatever he said. Odysseus also inspired his men while fighting
“As calves in stalls when cows come home, droves of them herded back from the field to farmyard one they’ve grazed their fill-as all their young calves come frisking out to meet them, bucking out of their pens, lowing non stop, jostling, rushing round their mothers-so my shipmates there at the sight of my return came pressing round me now, streaming tears. So deeply moved in their hearts they felt as if they’d made it back to their own land, their city, Ithaca's rocky soil where they were bred and reared.” (book 10, 452-461)
Some things we have can be control but, not others. We try our best to control others, but not all of them we cannot control. Things we control are opinion like desire, dislike, and happiness. It takes time and many chances to change yourself. Our own actions can cause a reaction to another person. In one scene, he is at a bar drinking and he expresses his despair to two drinking friends in a bar. Phil asks them “What if there were no tomorrow?” One guy answers “That would mean there will be no consequences, there will be no hangovers, we could do whatever we wanted. “At first Phil responds with confusion because he thinks he is immortal or god. So, he wants to test it by risks his life by eating a lot of junk food, stealing money, seducing the local women, and having fun by drowning his sense of hopelessness. No matter what he does, even he kills himself multiple times, time will reset itself and he will wake up as if nothing had happened and nobody will remember.
Heroic, Strong, Brave, Confident. A hero is these things and many more. Two heroes who are very alike are Odysseus from the Odyssey and Hercules from the Disney movie Hercules. Not only did they both battle fearsome monsters, they were both working against an angered Greek god and shared many common characteristics. Odysseus and Hercules may have been uncannily alike but in the beginning they had their differences in motive. Although towards the end their purpose became more alike than ever.
Contracts are used in many situations such as business and individual situations. But not all contracts are binding, even if they were willingly agreed by both the offeree and offerer. The promise outlined in the contract has to be legal and voluntary for it to be affective by law. Whilst both parties must accept a just understanding for a contract to be valid. A contract is a chosen arrangement between two or more parties that is enforceable by law as a binding legal arrangement. Contracts are vital for the protection of consumer rights as it allows the consumer to have legal paperwork of documentation if there was a chance of misadventure. Consumers must be very wary about the importance of reading through their contract before accepting
Donald Trump is one the top Republican candidates who is running. He is very famous for his various TV shows and earning his wealth through his massive real estate business. Donald Trump is very different, compared to Hillary Clinton and even to the other Republican candidates, because he will tell you how it is, and he will not sugar coat anything. He is what most would call “brutally honest.” The policies and views he has on certain things are positive and negative. One of Trumps biggest challenges is getting people to think of him a serious candidate. Many Americans see him as “goofy” and not serious enough to be a good president. Another issue he will face will be getting his party support and vote because his policies are very aggressive. Donald Trump’s background is in business not in a political field. This could cause a major support problem because many of his Republican opponents have political backgrounds. Trump is campaigning with three key policies: tax reform, second amendment rights, and immigration reform. He believes that if he can accomplish these three things he will be able to “make America great again.” One of his other obstacles he has to face is his views over abortion. Being the Republican candidate he is, it is expected of his him to have strong views of anti-abortion. What most citizens do not like is the fact that he used to be pro-choice and now he is pro-life.
Existentialism is a European philosophy that began in the mid-19th century but reached its peak in the 20th century. Existentialism became popular following the catastrophic years of World Wars and the Holocaust when many people began to question the traditional belief systems and ideas based on the terrifying events committed during the wars. Existentialism is a set of philosophical systems, which emphasize individual existence, freedom, choice, and personal responsibility. Pursuing this further, existentialism is the idea that human beings simply exist and choose their actions for themselves. To summarize, existentialism believes that people exist and live through their own behavior and perceptions and without any certainty about right or wrong. This is unlike those who believe that everything that occurs is fated or that there is a plan for life that one must follow and live based on it. The movie Forrest Gump (1994) directed by Robert Zemeckis is an existentialism movie because the movie shows the existentialism theme of freedom and choice as the main character Forrest Gump played by Tom Hanks was born without a purpose in life and he makes his own decisions throughout the movie for himself while facing many conflicts and, he was responsible for his action.
Phil is a literal ray of sunshine. Phil never stops smiling. The only time he is not smiling he is joking with his roommate and pretending to be serious, or he is concentrating on something. I learned to look at the bright side of things and put the negative behind me. Phil never pulls away first in a hug because he thinks you might need the hug. In Phil’s video called ‘A Day in the Life of Dan and Phil in London’ Phil and Dan were making stir fry but they didn’t have soy sauce, so Dan made Phil go to the store to buy soy sauce, the store didn’t have any soy sauce and he was to awkward to leave without buying anything so he bought a kinder egg.
Theo Decker, the protagonist of the story was sent on a quest to find his individuality at a young age. He learned that life isn’t always fair but one can still write their own rules and make life the best for them. Existentialism can be seen throughout the book with many decisions that Theo makes are risky. Still, existentialism would not apply to the whole story.
The Bourne series deals with existentialism by showing us what has happened to Bourne. In the movie he wakes up not knowing who he is or where he is. Trying to figure out what got him in the position that he is currently in. This compares to existentialism because the basic belief to this is believing in oneself, and trying to find out who you are. Striving to live life fully and see where it takes you. Jason, doesn't know what he wants from the world and its people, going
The existentialist is one who is concerned only with that intense moment of awareness with only his senses at his disposal, never looking to the future – the most living awareness. McCandles, the protagonist, in Into the Wild has come to the realization that existence is already being dead and accepting the fact that life is absurd and marvelous. He embraced the sublime absurdity of existence by renouncing the language games society plays. What is so enticing about the existentialist is that he is not concerned with the pressure of appearances and small talk which society employs to lie about what they think and feel. Existentialism is accepting the inevitability of death and living life for the moment without entertaining hope or falsities that distract one from living and accepting truth. The existentialist sees the simplicity in life and the absurdity of complicating it with pretences and lies, the existentialist is a naked man, he is one who becomes one with the rest of creation in accepting his fate on this earth and not hoping for anything more – he simply exists.
(Existentialism: We as humans have some control over our own destinies. We may not be able to choose our situations (like where and when and what colour we are born) but we can choose how we live our lives and what we do with them. For instance, when Winston has to face the fact that John is leaving in 3 months and he is only leaving in 10 years,
