Young Goodman Brown, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is described as an allegory, a story whose characters and events have literal and symbolic meanings. Hawthorne uses symbolism, within his characters and the events to develop this religious allegory. Young Goodman Brown believed that his community, of Puritan beliefs, was true in its devotion to God and that he too, was strong in faith. However, the story explains that Young Goodman Brown’s journey taken through the dark, gloomy woods represents that he wasn’t true in his devotion to God, and that he lacked strong faith along with other characters within the writing. He describes the feeling of evil being all around him, “There may be devilish Indian behind every tree, what if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!” When Goodman Brown reaches the forest, he is met by a dark figure, who states that he is late, Goodman replies with, “Faith kept me back awhile.” The mentioning of faith is another example of the devotion he has and how he had to compromise with faith before heading into the forest. The forest emphasizes the outside world, which is described as the outside of the normal comfort zone, or the outside of right headed into the wrong, known as evil. Young Goodman Brown still seems to have faith in his own moral beliefs, he just doesn’t allow those of the world to woo him into believing that it too feels the same way. The allegorical characters and symbols lead to the reader distinguishing the theme of the story. The fall of man, where Goodman Brown leaves his faith to accompany the devil, leaving all good behind. It also describes the loss of innocence, when temptation comes our way we are waived to feel like we should commit to the evildoings; therefore, loosing innocence because we allowed the flesh to succumb us into sinning. Goodman Brown’s lack of trust in the world has lead him to be unforgiving, judgmental, and believing that people are hypocrites. He doesn’t realize that he is just the same as the rest, he just hasn’t taken his sins in consideration. Hawthorne is trying to get readers to understand that no one is perfect and all people commit sins. We must not judge them for their sins, we should love them and hate the sins and not become blind to the sins we have committed in our days. We should continue to have faith and be fully devoted to God throughout our daily lives, so we can continue to have a strong relationship and not falter in faith.
