How It All Goes Down
The novel opens, and we're given the initial setup. It's 1942. We're on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, and World War II is under way. The island is being stalked by German submarines that arrived during the nighttime and are targeting the area's oil refineries and tankers.
We're also introduced to the protagonist, Phillip, a young schoolboy who has never seen war before. He's "not frightened, just terribly excited" (1.5). Don't worry; that will change. We also meet Phillip's father, who works for one of the oil refineries and is the reason the family relocated from Virginia to Curaçao. The oil tankers are in danger and many of the sailors refuse to get on board for fear of being torpedoed and sunk. Phillip's mother wants to go back to Virginia with her son, which creates tension with Phillip's father. Once the German submarines blow up the S.S. Empire Tern, a big British tanker, she decides to leave once and for all and is determined to take Phillip with her. Phillip realizes that Timothy can't spell, which causes Phillip to feel all high and mighty. Timothy, meanwhile, pushes Phillip to do tasks that he doesn't want to do (like weave sleeping mats). Eventually the situation blows up. Phillip calls Timothy ugly and stupid and Timothy smacks the bratty Phillip in the face. For some reason, this act of violence seems to knock some sense into Phillip. He realizes that Timothy is only trying to help them both survive on the island. Phillip decides he wants to be Timothy's friend and asks Timothy to call him Phillip instead of "young bahss"
In The Cay, Phillip’s character reveals that through many conflict he developed independence, coexistence, and bravery.
When the boys first got on the island they were doing good. They picked a leader, they had rules and they were doing pretty. Unit Jack wanted to be leader and he left the tribe. So that made other kids leave and join his tribe which started a conflict. That ends with them losing their innocence and experiencing the darkness of the man ‘s heart.
It scared me stiff… It was the turning point for me. I began to see what people were really capable of doing…” In addition to fear, author William Golding perceived the bane of the boys’ predicament on the island as the manifestation of war and its traumatic effects. “ There was a sudden bright explosion and corkscrew trail across the sky, then darkness again and stars.” At one moment on the island, the boys witnessed a parachutist descending from an aircraft shot and killed mid-air, further demoralizing their detainment. were stranded on a raft. they both went through a lot together. first, phillip went blind after he cracked his head, the second timothy spotted an island inside of the devil's mouth, the third timothy got malaria, and the fourth timothy died after a tempest or hurricane fell upon the island. as we spoke with Phillip he told us that timothy said “ racism is just an act people don't stop to think that on the inside we all the same”, then we ask him what all happened and he said “I was alone on the island for four months after Timothy died, until the US Navy Corpse aircraft soared over my head
1. Chapter 1, is about introducing the Tres Camarones, the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. Also, since the people in that town didn’t like change much there are already danger roaming around like the bandidos who will be evading the town.
Sir Philip appears to be completely devoid not only of puritanical principles, but also Christian principles. When his ploy to free Magawisca in order to be liberated from Rosa is devastated, getting attacked by the prisoner, Morton, and then being rescued by Magawisca and the jailer, Barnaby Tuttle, Sir Philip becomes painfully aware of his falsity. He realizes, by comparing himself to Barnaby, that "genuine goodness ... rings true at every trial; while hypocrisy, though it show a face fair and bright, yet, like a new false coin, betrays at every scratch the base metal" (261). While the goodness of people such as Barnaby, Magawisca, and Hope will remain unfailing
War can be a stressful time for people and families everywhere. At the current time in the book, world war II is happening. Gene and his friends learn about what is going on across the world. All the lives losses and all the tragedies. Its a difficult time to be a child. In times like that, the kids have to grow up and act serious. Gene and his friends mature quickly and want to help out in the war. Kids are maturing quickly in order to help the country.
As Tim’s hard work, he and his mother receive heartbreaking news that his father had died on a British prison ship (Collier, 1974). The news of his father never coming back made Tim’s coming of age even more serious (Collier, 1974). The countries coming of age continued as Tim and Susannah Meeker found out when Sam came home from the war with his clothes were all ripped, and he talked of both of the sides of the war were short of clothing and hungry (Collier, 1974). When they took an innocent boy Jerry Sanford Tim’s best friend to die on a prison ship was another sign of the countries coming of age. After they boy died all they did to bury him was throw him overboard into the ocean (Collier,
Jack and the rest of the boys are looking around trying to contemplate all that just had happened. A naval officer had just put Jack in handcuffs and taken him away with the rest of the boys following. They are all getting on a boat and get shipped back to where they came from, all of the boys were all shocked that they were even getting saved in the first place. All of the officers were asking the boys questions but the boys were too stunned to even speak. For weeks they have dreamed of being saved, of being home, and of their family and finally now it was happening.
He gave himself up to them now for the first time on the island; great, shuddering spasms of grief that seemed to wrench his whole body. His voice rose under the black smoke before the burning wreckage of the island; and infected by that emotion, the other little boys began to shake and sob too”(202) This is perhaps one of the best pieces of optimism in the novel. The naval officer breaks the boys back into reality, even Jack. …started forward, then changed his mind and stayed still” (202).
the story to describe these kids and one of the ways he does this is through the theme war leads to destruction showing the true inner evil even in the most innocent things in life.He uses the idea of war as his main plot point and the perfect medium to connect the crashing of the plane to being rescued by a naval officer. When the boys crash on the island due to being attacked, they were ironically rescued by a naval officer preparing to go back
Phillip which makes him get in a lot of trouble, he has to leave his hometown for his own
•The sight of the Atlantic ocean captivates the attention of the boys and, for a little while, allows them to forget their in the middle of a war. The shore is strange to them so they take the time to explore and enjoy it.
The main idea of the story is finding the treasure. Ben Gunn has lived on the island for three years, and knows where the treasure lies. Before the pirates find Jim and his mother, Jim grabs a key and an oilskin packet from the old sea chest. Jim’s father dies, and he and his mother flee to the nearby town and ask them to help them but they refuse to. They find a nearby bridge to hide under, and escape from the pirates. Finally, the people from the town decide to come to Jim and his mothers rescue. Later in the book, Jim hides in an apple barrel and overhears Silver and other crewmates about taking the ship once they have the treasure on the ship. When land was sighted a conflict went on between Silver and another group of pirates. Jim escapes while the fight is going on. He finds Ben Gunn and they become friends. Jim goes with Silver on the hunt for the treasure. They discover that the treasure is missing, and they fire into the surrounding area. The treasure was stowed in the Hispanolia’s lower deck. Silver steals a sack of coins and escapes.
