HOW JOB REDESIGN MOTIVATES WORKERS IN HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICE DEPARTMENT (HIS) Introduction: Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group towards a goal. Goal setting can be guided by goal setting criteria such as the SMART criteria. That means a goal should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound. HOW THE PRINCIPLES OF GOAL SETTING ARE APPLIED IN HIS DEPARTMENT? To answer the first question from the case, I deduced that HIS department focuses on four principles of goal setting namely (i) Re – engineering (ii) restructuring (iii) work design and (iv) job design. Re-engineering: Is the process of rethinking the business and systems of an organisation. In Health Information System the re – engineering process involves the scrutiny of the mission, structure and policies of the organization. Restructuring: Is the process of changing the organizational structure, such as reporting lines or the composition of functional units. The purpose of restructuring is to increase organizational efficiency and cost effectiveness. Work redesign: Is the rearrangement of a department’s efforts to produce goods and services. In work redesign, health information managers rearrange work through task structure, work processes, procedures and physical layout.
