In order to completely understand how McDonald 's became so successful you first have to understand the man who was behind it all. Ray Kroc first visited a McDonald’s in 1954 in California. He came upon a small business run by two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald, and was surprised to see how effective their small little restaurant was doing so well with such a limited number of items. At that time the brothers were looking for a new agent and that is where Kroc stepped in (Gelles). Ray Kroc opened the first McDonald’s restaurant on April 15,1955 in Chicago, Illinois. He had a certain vision of his future restaurant and was aware that in order for it to happen he would need support from franchisees to believe in the same vision that he had, and at the same time go where he wants to go. Later in 1955, Kroc founded the McDonald’s System incorporation which was previously the McDonald’s Corporation (Gelles). Before opening the doors, Kroc knew that all of the ingredients would need a different taste to make the burgers different from other restaurants. For example, the Filet-O-Fish, Big Mac, and Egg McMuffin were founded by the franchisees and had to maintain the same ingredients, quality, service, cleanliness, and value. He wanted to sell foods that were affordable but still open for any types of improvement, great tasting, and great quality (Gelles).
