During the 1940’s I will be taking about how Pete Seeger became a successful musician, and how he made a difference in the music industry. Pete Seeger was a smart man when it came to politics and being a musician, he got accepted to Harvard University, although he wasn’t your average college student; he couldn’t study which lead him into feeling his classes and dropping out. After Seeger dropped out of school he went into politics, Seeger always had a thing for music and politics; he had a lot of hobbies such as music, painting, hiking, and he loved being outdoors (Winkler 2011, 2). Pete’s father loved academics and enjoyed playing music, he was a great pianist and played harmony, his colleagues liked hearing him play, they thought he was a great musician. Seeger learned a lot from his dad. Seeger and Guthrie came from singing in the saloons, radio shows, political rallies, Guthrie wrote thousands of songs. Seeger and Guthrie both had a lot in common; they both were musicians; and both enjoyed playing music, rather it was playing with a banjo or writing music. Guthrie and Seeger appeared at a few gatherings at an American piece mobilization March in Washington DC to protest the nations drift toward war (Winkler 2011, 24-25). They were the only band who rehearsed on stage before performing. Guthrie and Seeger were known as the Almanac singers; the Almanac singers wrote their first antiwar songs, they were looking for someone to record them. Even though in a couple of their
In the 1960s, Rock ‘n’ Roll was replaced in popularity by other branches of rock such as Acid Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Hard Rock as a hippie counter culture arose, mainly to protest against the Vietnam war. These new forms of rock provided social commentary on the wide range of assassinations and anti-civil rights actions that infested the country, and united those that wanted to end them. They too celebrated anti-authority actions, but now they were used to promote peace and drugs. Americans—mainly college students—were still rebelling against societal constraints, but instead of fighting against the conformity of white suburbia and their parents, they were uniting to fight against U.S. governmental authority. Rock in the 1960s still mainly appealed to the younger generations, but its influence was spreading. Folk Rock (Bob Dylan) was playing in protest, reminding the individuals there that they were fighting for peace, and Psychedelic Rock—which replicated or enhanced the mind altering experience of psychedelic drugs—created a soothing and new atmosphere in the U.S. Music festivals such as Woodstock in 1969 sprung up to promote peace, do drugs, listen to music, and enjoy being alive and young.6 However, this element of extreme partying and pleasure, eventually brought a few stars to early deaths, such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Of course, there were acts that existed before the 50’s, and made a good name for them selves, acts like Bing Crosby, but it was in the 50’s that certain artists became household names, and idols to the masses.
Folk rock in the sixties inherited the tradition of country and western. In the 1960s, the main representatives of folk rock were Joan Baez, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, and so on. However, the most important folk rock singer is Bob Dylan, who was the first and the most important folk rock music creator. Known as the “protest song singer”, for the entire 1960s, Bob Dylan 's music strongly affected young people that were in the wandering and confusion. It was like a banner, a totem, and a pioneer, helped the the youth from the 1960s generation of found the sustenance of their ideals.

The individuals involved in the hippie movement were from a wide range of different backgrounds. Many of them parted with their families and the places that they were raised to follow their own paths. Many of these individuals experimented with LSD and other drugs such as marijuana. Arguably one of the most powerful of Dylan’s social issue charged song is The Death of Emmet Till, a young black man who was unrightfully killed by the Ku Klux Klan. By 1963, Dylan and his on and off lover Joan Baez were both very well known in the civil rights movement. Baez and Dylan would sing together at rallies including the famous March on Washington. Dylan was on stage with Martin Luther King Jr. when his gave his infamous I Have a Dream speech. Though Dylan sang of American injustices, he was never incredibly interested in politics and he was ultimately frustrated by people defining him solely as a protest singer. Dylan’s frustrations with the unsought political branding are expressed in It Ain’t Me Babe, which “appears to be a song about rejected love, [it] was actually his rejection of the role his reputation and fans had thrown on him” (Carlson).
“Many commentators have since claimed that peace and good will arose not in spite of disaster, but because of it. The hunger, rain, mud, and unserviced toilets conspired to create an adversity against which people could unite and bond” (Cooke 178). Most of the fans present expressed how they felt about the war in riots and violence. “Woodstock Ventures retained its exclusive rights, but the memory of Woodstock Nation belongs to the world; it is irrevocably imbedded in American culture” (Cooke 179). Not only was the war an influence, but the gathering itself influenced the historical outcome. “The most common feeling among all parties-producers, musicians, audience, town, and nation-was the sense of history in the making. It was the largest group of people ever gathered, and the greatest roster of musicians ever assembled, and it became the defining moment of a generation” (Cooke 178).

The famous performer wasn’t always living the high life as his childhood was quite grueling. Yet, he didn’t let it stop him from working his way up in the music business, and leaving a lasting impression on music. Louis Armstrong’s struggles in his childhood paved the way to his successful career of playing trumpet and singing to audiences worldwide, while leaving his mark on Jazz music’s style which still lives on today.
The United States has a storied musical history, shaped by a massively diverse population and geography. “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Dixie’s Land” are two of the most important songs to American popular music history, and shaped the outcome of the Civil War and much of the past two centuries. Historically they represent entirely opposite ideals, but they interact immensely over the course of American history. Their complicated evolving relationships with society and each other represent the changing politics and culture of the United States from the Civil War to present day.

Playing with his teeth, burning his guitar, rising to fame in a matter of weeks all contributed to his remarkable life. Jimi Hendrix’s life and rise to fame were exceptionally unordinary and extraordinarily influential. Filled with curiosities from the day he was born to his tragic drug-related death, Jimi was unusual. Accordingly, these curiosities are what makes Jimi Hendrix such a notable figure in history.
Peter Seeger, also known as Pete Seeger, - an individual, who was a musician, an author, and an activist, has helped change history by writing and singing songs, participating in anti-war marches, and fighting for the nation in battle. Pete wrote and sang folk songs that related to everyday life stories. His childhood was very cold and kept him very lonely. He later dropped out of Harvard and wanted to be an observer for all public affairs. He supported himself by painting farmhouses, playing his banjo, becoming a porter and singing folk songs in a bar. The 1960’s in America was often referred to as an age of protest because of not only the social protests that have taken place, but also for the upbringing of protest music, which became very popular during that era. The roots of protest music were largely from folk music of American musicians during 1950’. Folk musicians, such as Joe Hill, composed labor union protest songs and distributed song booklets, hoping to “fan the flames of discontent.” (Rodnitzky pg. 6) Symbolically, this meant that the songs, the fan, would reduce the uncontrollable social protests that the United States government caused with the misleading information that they did not keep their word on, or the flames of discontent. Other folk musicians, such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, traveled around the United States spreading their “message music” and becoming involved in political movements. Guthrie and Seeger were the pioneers of protest music, bringing their folk music to New York City and merging it with urban music. Woody’s songs were about the masses, often identifying problems and offering solutions. While Seeger was cautious about referring to his music as folk music, preferring the term “people’s music,” meaning that not everyone may had the same thoughts, but they all expressed it in their own unique musical sense. Music: I found it interesting how influential Tito Puente was to music found in this chapter. He was able to gain a large following immediately after World War II, which is impressive in itself. The people that listened to his music even built a large statue in his honor. Puente fans are even willing to listen to his son perform his father’s song to preserve his legacy.
“Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” by Pete Seeger became a popular anti-war protest song during the 1960s. This song did not only protest against the Vietnam War but also made their generation more aware about the global problems. Songs like “Not Ready to Make Nice” by Dixie chicks about freedom of speech was written after they received death threats for singing against the Iraq war, protests against the violation of human rights. But music is not only used to protest, it is also used to give hope and optimism. “We Shall Overcome”, a song sung by Guy Carawan together with the Montgomery Gospel Trio and the Nashville Quartet, is perhaps the best known example of civil rights song. Instead of blaming the government, this song registered a feeling of hope and faith among African-Americans during the civil rights movement.
